HADJI ALI

Scenes from POLITIQUERIAS, the Spanish-language version of Laurel and Hardy's Chickens Come Home

Ollie introduces Hadji Ali to his house guests.
Hadji Ali and assistant start filling glasses with water.
Hadji Ali starts starts gulping down all the water. This goes on for about a minute and a half.
The butler (Jim Finlayson) looks on incredulously.
Hadji Ali now regurgitates all the water he has imbibed...
...some of which ends up on the flabbergasted Jim Finlayson.
Hadji Ali now takes a tray of nuts.
Slowly and deliberately he swallows the entire tray of nuts in full view of the camera.
He lets the camera examine his mouth, under his tongue, over his tongue...
Yes, all the nuts have been swallowed. (This is 1931, before the days of sophisticated trick photography.)
He gulps down some more water.
Hadji Ali now spits the nuts back onto the tray, one after the other...
...and then spews out the water he had swallowed.
For a humorous touch he spits out one last nut ...
...and laughs along with his audience.
Now comes the climax of his act. He carefully ties his headdress together...
...gulps down another pitcher of water...
  ...puts on some protective goggles...
...and gulps down a bottle of kerosene!
Behold!!
He proceeds to regurgitate the kerosene onto a burning model of a house!
He repeats this several times, wiping his mouth and arms carefully after each spraying...
...he then douses the conflagration with the water he had swallowed earlier!
Hadji Ali! The audience applauds enthusiastically.

Notes in Laurel and Hardy, the Magic Behind the Movies by Randy Skretvedt indicate that Hadji Ali was born in Egypt in 1892. He came to America in the 1920's, performed his regurgitating act in carnivals and vaudeville, and died in England on November 5, 1937. Politiquerias was shot early in 1931.
