Sat. Jan. 2
Not such a nice day but not too bad. We went to B.O. in A.M. & then Mon,
Isa & I went to Decorah. Got back to mama's about 2. Came home about 4.
Arthur got his hair cut today. Mag had a little calf today.
Sun. Jan. 3
Beautiful day. We went up home & spent the day. Went for a ride in the folks
new car in P.M. Stopped at Gust's awhile on our way home. Ray H. is there. One
of their horses kicked him above the right knee so he is laid up & is staying
with his mother. Mike, Grace, Floyd & Richard were here & spent the
eve. They went home about 11:30. They played cards.
Mon. Jan. 4
Cloudy, frosty day. School started again today after the Xmas vacation. Didn't
do much. Mon was over to Howards awhile in A.M.
Tues. Jan. 5
Not very nice day. Regular blizzard. Snowed quite hard. I went to a Farm Bureau
Meeting at Krumms with Dave & Lizzie. 13 there. Had a fine meeting, also
dandy dinner. Made work boxes. Got home about 4. Pretty windy & blizzardy.
Leonard B. was here in eve. We played cards. Made ice cream after I got home
from Krumms.
Wed. Jan. 6
Not very nice day. Didn't do much of anything.
Thurs. Jan. 7
Rather a nice day but the sun didn't shine much. Charlie Wernett butchered a
beef for us in P.M. Dave & Howard were here in P.M. Geo. Leistikow was here
in P.M. too see about our keeping our dog shut up. There is a mad dog scare
around & Fremont, Burr Oak, Hesper, Bluffton & Canoe tws. keep their
dogs tied up all the time.
Fri. Jan. 8
Snowed off & on all day. Sun shone some. Rather cold. We took a quarter
of the beef over to Dell's. Weight 89 lbs. Drove the team. Stayed there for
dinner. Got home about 3. Stopped at Aunt Lissa's a minute. Dance at B.O. in
eve but we didn't go. Pretty cold nite.
Sat. Jan. 9
Nice day but pretty cold. We went up home about noon. Got home about 5. Drove
the team. Arthur & papa went to Canton in P.M. Olive & the kids were
up home in P.M. too.
Sun. Jan. 10
Rather cold & windy day. Mon & the boys took a quarter of beef (.08
per lb. weighed 80 lbs.) over to Fred W's. in A.M. & then we went down to
Claudes & spent the rest of the day. Had a good time. The boys sure did.
Drove the team.
Mon. Jan. 11
Cloudy day again. Started thawing & thawed a lot in P.M. & nite. The
boys didn't go to school. We went up town & got Isa about 10:30 & went
to Decorah. Stopped at Prices awhile on our way down. Arthur got a new pr. of
6 buckle overshoes. Tom Dawley rode out from Decorah with us. We had dinner
up to mama's. Got home about 2:30. Did up the chores & went back up there.
Mon went to Decorah with papa in eve. The boys & I stayed with mama. We
got home about 11:30. It sure had thawed a lot when we came home.
Tues. Jan. 12
Rainy, misty day. Thawed like everything. Rained hard in the eve. Mon helped
Floyd A. saw wood most of the day. Terribly wet everywhere. Water all over.
Wed. Jan. 13
Not very nice day. Rained in A.M. I canned 15 qts. of beef & made 12 qts.
of mincemeat. Mon helped Floyd finished his sawing in P.M. Lester was here a
little while in P.M. Froze hard in the nite.
Thurs. Jan. 14
Colder day. Started to snow about 2 & snowed & blowed the rest of the
P.M. I washed in A.M. Clothes didn't dry much before the snow came.
Fri. Jan. 15
Not such a bad day. The sun shone some not so cold either. We drove the team
up home in A.M. Stopped at Gusts a minute on our way up. Had dinner up home.
I went to Club at Stella R's. in P.M. Quite a crowd out. Election of officers.

Sec. & Guthrude Emmons Treas. Had a dandy lunch. Got home about 5.
Sat. Jan. 16
Rather a funny day. Not cold. Started to snow about 4 & snowed quite hard
at times. The wind blew pretty hard in eve awhile. I did a little of everything.
Ole A. was here a minute in P.M. We went up there in eve. Gust, Kate & Ray
were there too. We played all kinds of cards. Had ice cream & cake. Gust's
rode home with us. Got home about 11:45.
Sun. Jan. 17
Dandy nice day but cold. Arthur & Dean drove the team up after the folks
& Lester's early in A.M. Claudes were here too. Had a good time. Mon took
the folks & Lesters home with the car about 4 P.M. Minda had a little calf
today.
Mon. Jan. 18
Nice day. Did a little of everything & not much of anything.
Tues. Jan. 19
Beautiful day. Mon took me up to Gladys' in P.M. to finish my dress. We went
& got Audry & took her over there too & took her home. Got the dress
nearly done. Got home about 5:30. Mon & the boys came after us. All of the
Weiser Banks closed their doors today. Too much speculation by Weisers I guess.
Everyone is pretty blue. No one with any money.
Wed. Jan. 20
Dandy nice day until late in P.M. it rained & sleeted. I washed & did
part of my ironing. Josie & the old Bell cow had calves this A.M.
Thurs. Jan. 21
Not very nice day. We went up home about 10:30 & spent the rest of the day.
Isa & Loyal were down home for dinner in the P.M. too. Olive & Marvin
were there in P.M. too.
Fri. Jan. 22
Not very nice day. Did a little of everything. Jim Matthews was here for supper
& spent the eve. Little daughter born to Grace & Ted Morrison this A.M.
Sat. Jan. 23
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off & was just fine in P.M. Pretty cold
tho'. We went to Decorah in A.M. Had dinner with Price's. Got home from town
about 4. Large crowd in town. Beautiful moonlight night. Got a sack of Jersey
Cream Flour for .87.
Sun. Jan. 24
Mon's 37th Birthday. Beautiful day. We were up home & spent the day. Claude's,
Lester's & Carls were there too. Tried to have a surprise on Mon but he
caught on. The brown cow had a calf this A.M.
Mon. Jan. 25
Beautiful day. Arthur stayed at home and helped Mon haul up wood. I didn't do
much of anything. Didn't feel very good.
Tues. Jan. 26
Snowed almost all day. Not hard but quite snowflakes some times. Didn't do much
of anything.
Wed. Jan. 27
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Harold C. was here & ground feed
for us in P.M.
Thurs. Jan. 28
Not such a nice day. Not cold. We went up home about 11. Got back home just
as the boys were coming from school. Isa & Loyal were at mama's for dinner
too.
Fri. Jan. 29
Snowed quite a lot early in A.M. & the wind blew so it was a regular blizzard.
Let up some in A.M. & then went by streaks the rest of the day. Quite a
blizzard some times. Got lots colder too. We took a couple of hogs to Decorah
(in Merle S's. trailer) in A.M. early. Isa walked down to the four corners &
went with us to Decorah. Got back up to mama's at noon. Had dinner there &
then I went to Club at Fannye R's. Quite a few out. Had a dandy lunch. We got
home just as the kids were coming from school so they all had a ride with us.
Mighty cold nite. 15 below. Our hogs weighed 430 lbs @ $3.35 per cwt. so we
got $14.40 for them.
Sat. Jan. 30
Mighty cold windy day. Didn't do much of anything but stay around the stove.
Floyd B. was here awhile in eve & then Mon went to B.O. awhile with him.
They got back about 10:30. 20 below. Little son born to Lloyd & Elanor Dinger
tonite.

Pretty cold day, only it was still & we didn't notice the cold so much.
We were alone all day & eve.
Mon. Feb. 1
Snowed all day. Not very cold. Didn't do much of anything.
Tues. Feb. 2
Sun didn't shine but it wasn't so cold. Mon & I went up to Gust's a little
while in P.M.
Wed. Feb. 3
Dandy nice day but pretty cold. Thawed some though. Didn't do much of anything.
Howard was here awhile in eve.
Thurs. Feb. 4
Dandy nice day but cold. I washed & ironed. Mon helped me with the washing.
Arthur went to school before 8 this A.M. He & Roger K. & Melvin M. are
taking 8th grade exams. Dave was over in A.M.
Fri. Feb. 5
Nice day. Not very cold. Mon helped Gust saw today. He got home about 4. The
boys finished writing their exams today. We went to B.O. in ever to the Dance.
Pretty good crowd. Had a good time. I got my hair cut tonite. We got home about
2:30.
Sat. Feb. 6
Snowed rather hard for a little while in A.M. Arnold D. sawed a pile of wood
for us in A.M. Gust, Ole & Floyd helped. O'Dean L. was here all A.M. &
for dinner. We went up town in P.M. Then Mon, Isa & I went to Prosper a
little while. Did some trading at the new store (John McMullens.) Good place
to trade.
Sun. Feb. 7
Rather blizzard in A.M. but not cold. Snow drifted the roads pretty full in
some places. We went up home a little while in P.M. Just got home & got
most of our chores done when Mart came & wanted us to go with him &
help him get his car. It was down by Ulen's. Didn't have much trouble getting
it started. Got back home about 7:30. Little son born to Carl & Hazel R.
this A.M. Pretty cold windy nite.
Mon. Feb. 8
Mighty cold in A.M. early but warmed up & was a nice day. My 40th Birthday.
Olaf L. came to cut wood for us today. Ed & Tom Dawley were here in A.M.
awhile. They were stuck in the snow with the car & borrowed our team &
sled to go over to Ottaways to saw wood. Mon & I went over to Howard's awhile
in eve.
Tues. Feb. 9
Dandy nice warm day. Olaf was here again today. Ed & Tom bro't the team
home this P.M.
Wed. Feb. 10
Beautiful day. Thawed a lot. Olaf was here again today. I washed & ironed.
Louie U. was here assessing in P.M. Clouded up in the nite & rained quite
a bit. Quite a little lightning too.
Thurs. Feb. 11
Rained almost all day. Pretty hard some times. Froze hard at nite so everything
is covered with ice. Olaf didn't come today.
Fri. Feb. 12
Nice day but windy & cold. Olaf was here again today. I walked up to Gladys'
at noon & went with them to Club at Elsie S's. Alice S. went along too.
Large crowd out. Had a dandy lunch. Got home about 5. Mon helped Howard saw
in P.M.
Sat. Feb. 13
Nice day but cold. I fell down early in A.M. & hurt my knee so Arthur went
up & got mama to come down. He took her home again about 4:30. Mon sawed
wood at Bennie G's. Olaf was here today & finished chopping. It is rather
hard for me to get around.
Sun. Feb. 14
Nice day. We went up home for dinner. Got home about 3:30. Audry & Harold
were here awhile after we got home.
Mon. Feb. 15
Cloudy, cold day. Arthur didn't go to school. We went up home about noon. Mon,
Arthur & Loyal went to Mabel in P.M. for feed for the folks. We got home
about 3. Leonard B. was here in A.M. & Ed D. in P.M.
Tues. Feb. 16
Not very nice day. Thawed a lot. Rained hard about supper time & for a while
& then turned to snow. Snowed & blew most of the nite I guess. Mon was
over to Howard's awhile in A.M. Richard B. was here awhile in eve.
Wed. Feb. 17
Regular blizzard in A.M. but wind went down some in P.M. so it didn't blow so
hard. Quite cold. The boys didn't go to school. We went to Decorah. Went up
home first & Arthur stayed with mama while we were gone. Got down to Price's
at dinner time so we ate with them. Got Dean a new pr. of overshoes & 100
lbs. of potatoes. Got home about 4. Had some snow to buck going up. Got stuck
3 or 4 times. Got home alright though. Will Arnold died very suddenly tonite.
Thurs. Feb. 18
Beautiful day. Thawed a lot. I washed. Richard B. came over about noon &
said that Howard's chimney was on fire so Mon went over there. It was quite
a fire.
Fri. Feb. 19
Nice day but pretty cold. Warmed up in P.M. & thawed some. I ironed. Richard
B. was here awhile in A.M. The Joan of Arc had a farewell party for Bessie &
John Johnson today but we couldn't go. They are moving to Nordness.
Sat. Feb. 20
Cloudy, cool, windy day. The boys drove the team up home in A.M. Arthur &
papa went to Decorah right after dinner. The boys got home about 4. Richard
B. was here in P.M. Old Molly got down & couldn't get up so Mon had to kill
her this eve. It rained & sleeted & blowed hard in eve & nite.
Sun. Feb. 21
Beautiful day. Thawed a lot. Water everywhere. Richard was over in A.M. Lester
& Harlan came down & Lester skinned Molly. We went up home for dinner.
Lester & Harlan rode up home with us. Mama, papa, Mon & I went to Will
Arnold's funeral in P.M. Large crowd out. Philip, Alice P., Hazel P. & I
sang. We sang "The Old Rugged Cross" & "Going Down the Valley"
& Philip sang a solo. We got home about 5.
Mon. Feb. 22
Cold day. Mostly cloudy. Didn't do much of anything. Ed D. was here awhile in
eve.
Tues. Feb. 23
Rather cold in A.M. but thawed some in P.M. Ed D. came about 10:30 & he
& Mon hauled wood the rest of the day. They hauled up 6 loads. Alice Morrison
died about 3 this morning. Bell had a little calf this A.M. Mon & the boys
Ed & Richard B. went to Bluffton just after supper & right back. Ed
went on home.
Wed. Feb. 24
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. Ed was here again today helping haul up wood.
He went home tonite. Mr. K. came over after me in P.M. & we went to B.O.
to practice. Practice at Stella R's. Got home about 4. Arthur heard from his
exams today. Av. of 92 %.
Thurs. Feb. 25
Beautiful day. We went to B.O. about 10:30. Lizzie & Mrs. K. went with us.
Went up to Alice Morrison's funeral but they postponed it at the last minute.
Her folks didn't get here. Mrs. K. went home but Lizzie, Mon & I went up
home for dinner. Claude's were there too. We got home about 3. In eve Lizzie,
Maxine, Walter, Kate, O'Dean & us went up to Morgan's to a farewell party
(Walter drove). Quite a crowd there. Had a good time. Got home about 2.
Fri. Feb. 26
Another nice day only the sun didn't shine so much. Thawed a lot again today.
We went to B.O. about noon to Alice's funeral. Very large crowd out & such
beautiful flowers & so many. Vera G., Hazel P., Florence E. & I sang
"Beautiful Isle of Somewhere", "Rock of Ages" & "Going
Down the Valley". Went up home awhile after the funeral. Claudes were there
& Mrs. Martin Olson. Mama & I went up to Alice M's. a few minutes too
see her folks. Isadore & Mon went to Prosper in P.M. & did some trading
for the whole bunch. We got home about 4:30. Roads are getting quite muddy in
some places. Joan of Arc met with Alice S. today but couldn't go.
Sat. Feb. 27
Beautiful day. Thawed a lot. Mon helped Charlie Wernett saw. We intended to
go to Decorah in P.M. but he didn't get home until 3 so it was too late to go.
Jim McCaffery's house burned to the ground this A.M. with nearly everything
in it. They just saved a few things & came very near losing Nell too in
the fire.
Sun. Feb. 28
Beautiful day. Thawed a lot. Arthur rode Barney up to mama's & spent the day. Dean rode up town with Richard B. & then right back.
Mon. Feb. 29
Beautiful day. Thawed a lot. We went to Decorah in A.M. It was froze up when
we went but it wasn't when we came home. Stopped at Price's a minute on our
way down. Ma isn't very well & Mrs. Miller is staying with her. We didn't
stay down town very long & when we came home we sure got in the mud. The
boys were along with us & they came home & got the team but Barney wouldn't
pull so hard. Floyd A. came along & he hauled us from Krumm's gate to Christs
corner. The mud was just terrible. We were about 2 hrs. getting from Krumm's
gate home. I nearly froze. Had too much of a cold. Shouldn't have gone to Decorah.
Felt pretty bum all nite. The jersey cow had a calf today.
Tues. Mar. 1
Regular blizzard but not cold. No school today. Mon was to help Harry M's. move
today but I felt so bum he wouldn't go so Arthur rode Barney up in A.M. &
told them he couldn't. Howard was over in eve awhile. The Lindberg baby was
stolen today.
Wed. Mar. 2
Nice day but the sun didn't shine. I thawed quite a little. Dean went to school
but Arthur didn't. Pearl came over awhile in A.M. & helped. I don't feel
very good.
Thurs. Mar. 3
Beautiful day. Arthur took the clothes down to Olive's in A.M. for her to wash.
Lizzie came over awhile in A.M. & washed dishes & separator. Papa came
down about 10:30 & Arthur took him out to the pavement again about 2. Howard
was here awhile in P.M. & so was Richard B. late in P.M. I am not much good
today either.
Fri. Mar. 4
Nice day. Thawed a lot. Sun didn't shine much though. Arthur went to B.O. in
A.M. & got Bess Halse to come down & help us. I don't feel like setting
the world afire. Howard was here awhile in P.M. Mon & Arthur hauled up wood
in P.M. Started to snow in eve & the wind came up so we had a regular blizzard
all nite.
Sat. Mar. 5
Regular blizzard. Colder than the dickens. Didn't do much of anything but set
around the stove. I am just about the same. Percy started for Bluffton in eve
to play for a dance but he telephoned from here & they were not going to
have it so he stayed here until about 10.
Sun. Mar. 6
Another cold blizzardy day. Bess's 17th birthday. Set around the stove again.
I am some better.
Mon. Mar. 7
Another cold blizzardy day. Dean & Arthur didn't go to school. I am better
but no good.
Tues. Mar. 8
Another day the same. Dean went to school. Mon went part way to B.O. & met
papa & got some medicine for me that Dr. Emmons sent up. Mon has a bad cold.
I am not much different.
Wed. Mar. 9
Another cold, windy day. Snow blowed. Mon feels pretty tough. Ed D. was here
for dinner. Hannah Sharp was buried at B.O. this P.M. Percy was over in eve.
Thurs. Mar. 10
Somewhat warmer but still cold. Howard & Floyd B. were here in A.M. Mon
& Arthur went down to Claude's in P.M. & got our clean clothes.
Fri. Mar. 11
About the same today. Wind still blowing from the north. Arthur is sick today.
Mon is about the same. I am pretty good.
Sat. Mar. 12
About the same only it snowed quite hard at times. Arthur is about the same.
Mon & Dean took Bess home late in P.M. Percy came over in eve.
Sun. Mar. 13
Windy day. Regular blizzard at times. Arthur is better. He went out & helped
with the chores at nite. Mon don't feel very good. Isa, Lester & the kids
& Gust were here & spent most of the day. Ed D. was here in P.M. &
for supper.
Mon. Mar. 14
Nice day. Thawed quite a little. Lester & Ed D. came & finished hauling
up our wood. Mon & I went to school meeting in P.M. Got home about 3 &
went to B.O. Lester rode up with us. Mon went to Prosper to do some trading
& the boys & I stayed at mama's. Bess came home with us.
Tues. Mar. 15
Beautiful day. Thawed a lot. Dean didn't go to school. Ed D. sawed wood for
us. Lester, Gust, Happy, Tom D & Bennie G. helped. Got done about 2:20.
Ed hauled the saw rig over to Floyds afterward & then came back here for
supper.
Wed. Mar. 16
Not very nice day. We took Bess home in P.M. & went up home a little while.
Thurs. Mar. 17
Quite a nice day. Didn't do much of anything. Arthur stayed home & helped
Mon. Percy W. & Clem Dinger were here a few minutes in eve.
Fri. Mar. 18
Rather a blizzard some times in A.M. but quit in P.M. Not nice then. Dad, Ma
& Warren came up & spent the day. Dance in B.O. tonite but we didn't
go.
Sat. Mar. 19
Regular blizzard in A.M. but cleared off & was nice in P.M. Thawed a lot.
We had a Farm Bureau Meeting here today. Not many out. Gladys A., Audry L.,
Vera G. & Pearl. Had a good time & a good dinner.

Cloudy day. Mon was over to Howards a while in A.M. We went up home & spent
the day. Walter & Wilma B. & the kids were there in P.M.

Dandy nice day. Didn't do much of anything. Snowed in the nite.

Nice day. Thawed quite a little. Didn't do much of anything. Snowed again tonite.
Wed. Mar. 23
Dandy nice day. We went up home about 10:30. Got papa & Isa & went to
Decorah. John Gates rode down with us but not back. Mon & I went up to his
folks a little while. Got back to B.O. about 4. Came right on home then. Thawed
a lot today. Snowed again tonite. Gust was down & spent the eve.
Thurs. Mar. 24
Not very nice day. Cold & windy. Went up to Geo Gates to a Farm Bureau meeting
with Dave & Lizzie (George's have moved to Grandma Price's place). Mon went
over to Seelye's. Gladys, Audry, Mrs. L., Jane, Lizzie, Mrs. K. & I were
there. Had a swell dinner & a good meeting.
Fri. Mar. 25
Good Friday. Tried to rain all A.M. but cleared off & was lovely in P.M.
Quite warm. Mon & Arthur went up to Seelye's in P.M. after straw & I
rode up as far as Ole's with them & then Ole took us to Club at Fern's.
Vera & Alice went along too. Quite a crowd out to Club. Had a swell lunch.
Got home about 5. Thawed so much in P.M. Water everywhere. Creeks were up so
high.
Sat. Mar. 26
Another nice day but the wind was colder. I washed & ironed some. Old Vet
got down in the barn & they couldn't get him up so Lester came down in A.M.
& killed & skinned him. Mon & Arthur went up to Seelye's in P.M.
for straw. Dale was here in P.M. Froze some tonite.
Sun. Mar. 27
Easter Sunday. Rather cloudy early in A.M. but cleared off & was a beautiful
day. We were alone all day & eve. Froze tonite.
Mon. Mar. 28
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. Mon sawed wood at Happy's. Arthur didn't go to
school. One old sow had 9 little pigs tonite but killed them all.
Tues. Mar. 29
Rather cool in A.M. but was pretty warm in P.M. Mon, Arthur & I went to
B.O. about 9 with the team & wagon. Took papa's car & papa, Isa &
Loyal went with us to Decorah. Arthur, Mon & I went up to Prices for dinner
& then Dad went down town with us in P.M. Mon & Dad went to a sale at
Ronan's yards in P.M. Mon bought a team of mules. He led them home & Arthur
drove the car to B.O. Danny M. rode home from B.O. with us. We got home about
6. The roads are just terrible. All the horses could do to pull an empty wagon.
Mon got home about 8 with his mules.
Wed. Mar. 30
Looked rather stormy in A.M. Snowed a little. Howard, Dave, Gust & Geo G.
were here in A.M. Wind blew hard & dried the roads some in P.M. Mon &
Arthur drove the mules around in P.M. 1 sow had 13 little pigs tonite. Howard
was over in eve. Arthur's 15th Birthday.
Thurs. Mar. 31
Beautiful day. Wind blew hard & dried the ground quite a little. I washed
in A.M. & ironed some in P.M. Walt R. stopped & fed his horses here
about 2 & ate his lunch here. Arthur rode Barney to Bluffton in A.M. Mon
& Arthur went up to Seelye's in P.M. after straw. Dad P. came up to the
Bank at B.O. in P.M. so Mon had to go over there then. They got home with their
load of straw about 6. 3 sows had 5-8-8 pigs tonite.
Fri. Apr. 1
Not very nice in A.M. Rained some. Cleared off in P.M. Mon & Arthur worked
around home all day. Fixing up for little pigs. 3 sows had 11-11 & 10 little
pigs tonite.
Sat. Apr. 2
Dandy nice & warm in A.M. but the wind turned around into the north in P.M.
& it sure got cold. We drove the mules up home in A.M. & spent the day.
The roads have dried up a lot but they are pretty muddy yet. Mon, Arthur &
Dean got hair cuts today. We took papas car in P.M. & went to Prosper &
did some trading. Isa went along too. We got home here about 5.
Sun. Apr. 3
Dandy nice day. But the wind was cold. Mon, Dean & I went over to Lovliens
with Dave, Lizzie & Maxine to Henry L's. 60th Birthday party. Quite a few
neighbors there. Had a swell dinner & lunch & a lovely time. Got home
about 6.
Mon. Apr. 4
Not very nice day. Cloudy. Rained hard at noon & until about 2:30. Mon &
Dean went up to Seelye's after the dehorning rack in A.M. & Philip came
home with Mon & they dehorned 10 calves. Dean stayed up to Geo G's. &
spent the day. No school for a week. Spring vacation.
Tues. Apr. 5
Not very nice in A.M. early but cleared off & was a nice spring day. We
went up home in A.M. Had dinner there & then Mon & papa & I went

to his folks a little while. Sid is home for awhile. We got home about 6:30.

Not so nice in A.M. but cleared off & was a dandy day until about 5. It
rained hard then & off & on again the rest of the night. Pretty severe
thunder & lightning. Mon & the boys worked around home all day. Doing
odd jobs. Jim M. was down & spent the eve. Richard B. was here most of the
A.M.

Rather cold wind from the north all day. Blowed mighty hard. Mon went down in
the big woods early in A.M. to help Lester saw his wood. He got home about 5:30.
The wind dried the roads a lot.
Fri. Apr. 8
Beautiful day. Richard B. split wood for us this A.M. Mon & the boys went
after a load of straw in A.M. but they got stuck so it was after 1 when they
got home. They went after another load in P.M. Club day today but the roads
were so bad they postponed it 2 weeks. They dragged the road past here today.
Some cars were past here. First for over a week.
Sat. Apr. 9
Beautiful day. Richard split wood all day. Mon & the boys went after straw
in A.M. but Christ's horse was in the sink hole & they worked all the A.M.
helping get him out. They came home to dinner & then went back & got
the horse out & then got their load of straw. The last one. We went to B.O.
in eve with the car. Mon, Isa & I went to Prosper & did our trading.
Stopped up home awhile when we came back. Got home about 11.

Another dandy day. Arthur & Richard rode horse back most of A.M. Claudes
were up for dinner & supper. Donald Gates was here in P.M. too.

Nice bright day but the wind blew hard from the north & it was cold too.
I washed & ironed. Mon & Arthur hauled manure in A.M. & Mon helped
Albert E. & Marion saw in P.M.
Tues. Apr. 12
Nice cold, windy day again. Mon & Arthur did a little of everything. We
went up to Geo G's. in eve.
Wed. Apr. 13
Nice day. Some warmer. Mon started plowing sod today. Floyd B. split wood here
all day. Pearl was here a few minutes at noon.
Thurs. Apr. 14
Nice day. Warmer. Mon plowed. Floyd split wood in A.M. We went to Prosper at
noon to do some trading. Stopped in B.O. a little while on our way back. Got
home about 3. Lizzie came over & rode over to Floyd A's. with us.
Fri. Apr. 15
Rather cloudy & cool. Mon & Arthur went over to Albert E's. for a load
of hay in A.M. Lloyd K. was here for dinner. He bought 3 head of young stuff
for $43. Lyle M. came down in eve & got them. Rained some in eve. We were
going to B.O. to the Dance but when it rained we didn't go.
Sat. Apr. 16
Dandy nice day. Mon & the boys went over to Alberts in A.M. & got another
load of hay. The boys & I took a grist to B.O. in P.M. & Mon plowed.
Went up home a few minutes. We didn't stay long up town.
Sun. Apr. 17
Dandy day. The boys & I went up home for dinner. Mon's folks came up about
2:30 so we had to come home. They were here for supper. Mon hauled oats from
Gust's.

Beautiful day. Mon & Arthur left here about 7:30 in A.M. & didn't get
back until nearly 6:30 P.M. Hauled oats from Albert E's. Hauled one load to
Gust's in A.M. & then he got part of the load they got in P.M. I washed
& ironed.
Tues. Apr. 19
Mama's 61st Birthday. Mon plowed in A.M. We went up town at noon. Got back about
2:30 & Mon plowed after that.
Wed. Apr. 20
Dandy nice day. Mon plowed all day. Arthur & I went to B.O. early in A.M.
& then on to Prosper. Mama & Loyal went to Prosper with us. Loyal came
on home with us to stay awhile.
Thurs. Apr. 21
Dandy day. Much warmer. Mon started out to plow in A.M. but his mother, father
& Sid came up about 10 so he came to the house & Arthur plowed until
noon. The folks brought up some apple, cherry & elm trees & they set
them out. Took them until about 2 & then they went home & Mon went back
to plowing. Dean & I went down on Silver Creek after school. Found lots
of pretty flowers.

Beautiful day. Quite warm. Mon plowed all day. Club at Muriel T's. today but
couldn't get there.
Sat. Apr. 23
Beautiful day but terribly windy & dusty. Mon plowed all day. The boys &
I went over to Floyd's in P.M. & got some horseradish. Went to B.O. in eve.
Loyal went home. Lester, Harlan, Mon, Dean & I went to Prosper a few minutes.
Stopped at mama's a few minutes on our way home. Rained while we were coming
home & all the rest of the nite. Got home about 10. Arthur stayed up home
all nite.

Dean's 12th Birthday. Rained off & on all day (& was cold) & sometimes
quite hard. Snowed some too. The folks were all coming here today to celebrate
Dean's birthday but one thing & another happened & the rain so no one
but Mon's folks came. They went home early. Ed D. & Richard B. were here
awhile late in P.M.

came home this A.M. Lester was here for dinner.

Dandy nice day. Much warmer. I washed & ironed. Mon plowed in A.M. He &
Arthur took turns dragging in P.M. We went up to Gust's awhile in eve.

Nice day. Mon & Arthur took turns dragging again today. Dad & Mother
P. came just as dinner was about ready & left right after dinner. Walt R.
was here for dinner too. Isa & Lester were here awhile in P.M. Pearl was
here at supper time. Rained hard in the nite.

Not very nice day. Cold & windy. Sprinkled off & on all day. Mon plowed
about all day. Finished plowing for small grain. He & Arthur went over to
the paving at noon & met Dad P. & got our grass seed. Rained hard in
eve. Quite hard thunder & lightning. No dance at B.O. tonite. Postponed
for 2 weeks.

Not very nice day. Cold & rained off & on during the day. Mon went up
to Gust's early in A.M. too get the seeder & started to seed but it was
too muddy. We went to Decorah in P.M. Isa met us at the four corners & went
with us. Large crowd in town. Saw Ruth & Francis. Got home about 5.

Dandy nice day. Wind was cool tho'. We went up home awhile in P.M. Claude's
& Isa & the boys were there too. Got home about 6. Gust was down awhile
in eve. Froze quite a little tonite.

Nice day. Mon took Gust & Kate to Decorah this A.M. so Arthur seeded. Mon
got home about 1 & then he seeded until about 4. Marion came & Mon came
up to the house awhile then. Marion is going to put in some fence. Had a little
shower in eve. Quite a bit of thunder & lightning.
Tues. May 3
Cloudy day. Sprinkled some off & on. Marion & Arthur worked at the fence
most of the day. Mon finished seeding the north piece & then Arthur started
dragging it. Pearl was over awhile in A.M. Mr. Lars Underbakke died tonite.

Dandy nice day until about 2:30 it clouded up & sprinkled some. Rained hard
in eve. Bad thunder & lightning. Mon & Arthur took turns dragging in
A.M. Arthur & I went to Prosper in P.M. Mama, Isa & Loyal went up with
us. Marion fixed fence all day.
Thurs. May 5
Rained off & on all day. The men fixed fence all day. Mon plowed a little
in P.M. Rained hard again in eve. Bad thunder & lightning. Set goose eggs
today.

Quite a warm day but not very nice. Rained off & on all day. Mon plowed.
Mr. Underbakke was buried this P.M. but it rained so hard we didn't get there.

Not very nice day. Rained off & on & some times quite hard. Mon plowed.
Arthur took Gladys, Vera, Alice & I to Club at Miriam W's. Quite a few out
for such a rainy day. The Club had a Food Sale at Fred Glice's store & Gladys
stayed there & sold things while the rest of us went on to Club. Dean went
up to George's with us & then he didn't come home again. Marion went home
this P.M.

Dandy nice day. Much warmer. Arthur dragged in A.M. & Mon plowed in P.M.
I did a little of everything. The Herbie cow had a calf today.

Beautiful day. Quite warm. Mon plowed all day. We did a little of everything.
Arthur walked up home & spent the day. Papa bro't him home in P.M. Loyal
came along & stayed over nite. They found the Lindberg baby murdered &
thrown in the brush just a little ways from their home, today.
Fri. May 13
Beautiful day. Mon plowed. Arthur & I cleaned out the strawberries in P.M.
Lester's moved down on Harry Little's place today. We took Loyal home tonite
& then went on to B.O. to the dance. Large crowd out. Different crowd. Mostly
strangers. We got home about 2:20. Had a pretty good time watching the rest
make fools of themselves.

Beautiful day. Pretty hot. Mon plowed, Arthur, Dean & I went up to B.O.
early in A.M. & went to Decorah with papa. Got back home here about 11:45.
Arthur applied for his drivers license today.

Very nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & rained very hard late in P.M.
& eve. We went up home & spent the day. Claudes & Lester's were
there too. Celebrating papa's birthday. Just as dinner was about over some folks
came from Miserva Iowa to see Lester's so they had dinner & spent the P.M.
too. Mike Donlan died today.

Nice day, but mighty windy. Mon & I planted potatoes in P.M. Went to Prosper
in eve. Gust & Kate went along too. They cut our telephone off today.

Dandy warm day. Mighty windy. Mon worked in the field all day. Last day of school.
Arthur went up for dinner. The parents were not invited. I ironed some in P.M.
& then Dean & I went up after the mail & stopped in too see Hazel
Olson a little while. (They live up at Christs). Arthur started to drive the
car up to school this noon but something went wrong with it & it wouldn't
go.

Beautiful day. Pretty warm. Mon worked in the field all day. The boys &
I planted garden in A.M. Jim Johnson & Walter Bucknell were here for dinner.
Dean & I were all over the woods east & west in P.M. Dad P. & Sid
were up for supper. Ma is in the Hospital at Rochester. Taking treatments for
her heart. Ed D. was here awhile in eve.

Cold. Looked quite rainy in A.M. Mon worked in the field all day. Lizzie &
Maxine were over in P.M.

Nice day. Some warmer. Ray McCauley came early in A.M. & spent the day.
Ed D. was here most of the day too. Leonard Mc. & Donald G. came in P.M.
& then the boys were all over the country I guess. Mon & Ed went down
to Harry Halse's in P.M. to get repairs for the car but didn't get them. Geo,
Vera, Junior, Gust & Kate were down & spent the eve. Dietels went in
the ditch up here at the corner in eve & Mrs. D. came down here while the
men were helping get the car out.

Dandy nice day. Mon & Arthur took turns working in the field. Dean was up
to Isa's awhile in A.M. We shelled seed corn. Papa & mama were down a while
in P.M. Art Olson was here in eve awhile.
Tues. May 24
Nice day. Mon & Arthur took turns dragging again today until about 3 P.M.
Mon started planting corn. I set out 36 tomato plants tonite.
Wed. May 25
Dandy nice day except a while in A.M. Had a little shower but it cleared off
then & was nice the rest of the day. Arthur dragged & Mon planted corn.
They came in during the rain. Mon fixed holes for us & Dean & I set
out 85 more strawberry plants. Dean & I went up after the mail in P.M. &
stopped at Hazels a little while. Rained hard in the nite. Ben Nolte's barn
burned tonite.
Thurs. May 26
Nice day. Mon & Arthur worked in the field until P.M. Arthur walked up home
& got the folks car & we went to Prosper to do some trading. Arnold
D., Isa & Loyal went along.

Cold, windy day. I washed & ironed. Mon & Arthur worked in the field.
Went over to Pearl's awhile late in P.M. Froze tonite but didn't hurt anything.
Sat. May 28
Beautiful day. Mon & Arthur finished planting corn this P.M. I went to Decorah
about 9 A.M. with Ole, Gladys, Vera G. & Mrs. K. to the Farm Bureau Achievement
day. It was held at the Luther College Gymnasium. Very large crowd out. Had
a fine dinner. The program & pageant was just great. B.O. got second place
this year. Everything was so nice and such a wonderful place to have it. Got
home about 6 & Dad P. & Stanley were here. Stanley came too see Ma &
spend Memorial Day. They left about 7:30.
Sun. May 29
Dandy nice day. Mama & papa were here & spent the day. Papa & the
boys went fishing in P.M. but didn't get anything. Dean went home with the folks
& stayed all nite. Carl, Hazel & the kids were here awhile in P.M. Dave
was here in A.M.
Mon. May 30
Not very nice in A.M. Rained off & on but cleared off & was nice in
P.M. Mon took Gust's corn planter home in A.M. & got the manure spreader
so he hauled manure after he got home. Arthur drove the team up home early in
A.M. to fix a garden for the folks but they didn't get done so he & Dean
drove papa's car home & left the team up there. We went over to Loveliens
a few minutes in eve.
Tues. May 31
Not such a nice day. Rained off & on. I washed & ironed. The boys went
up home again today & finished the work up there. They got home with the
team about 4:30. Harlan came home with them. Mon hauled manure.
Wed. June 1
Beautiful day. Pretty warm. Papa & mama came down about 10 A.M. & stayed
for dinner. They helped plant potatoes until noon. Geo. G. was here for dinner
too. Harlan went home with papa & mama after dinner. Mon & the boys
planted potatoes & melons in P.M. I went to a stork shower for Pearl in
P.M. Not many out. She got some nice things. Had a swell lunch. Got home about
6. Little son born to Albert & Florence E. this A.M. Norris Norman.
Thurs. June 2
Nice in A.M. Had a dandy rain in P.M. Dean & I were over to Lizzie's in
A.M. Mon & Arthur fixed fence. Papa & mama came about 11. We had dinner
& then took their car & went to Decorah. Took mama home & papa went
to Aunt Lissa's. We stopped at Price's. Mother P. got home from Rochester yesterday.
She is pretty tired & weak. Got back to Aunt Lissa's & got papa &
took him home then drove the car on over to our place & kept it all nite.
Fri. June 3
Pretty warm day. I planted sweet & pop corn in A.M. Arthur took papa's car
home in P.M. & Vera & I rode to B.O. with him then started to walk over
to Florence Wards too Club but Luella Y. caught up with us & gave us a ride.
Quite a few out. Had a nice time & good lunch. Papa & Arthur came &
got us & then papa bro't us home. He went on down to Asa Lang's. Mon started
plowing corn this P.M. Dean went over to Isa's.
Sat. June 4
Not such a nice day. Rather cloudy & misty at times. Cleared off in P.M.
though & was pretty warm. Mon plowed corn. Hazel O. came down after supper
& got some milk. Lizzie & Maxine were over & spent the eve. Walt
& Wilma, Kenneth & Pearl stopped a few minutes late in eve on their
way to the dance at Bluffton. Rained hard in the nite.

Rained hard early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day only mighty warm.
Dean & Arthur were over to Isa's & spent the day. Tom Dawley was here
awhile in A.M. Donald Gates got his leg broke this A.M.

Warm day. Mon plowed corn & potatoes. I washed & ironed. Started to

Donald G. in P.M. Isa, Lester & the boys came along in eve going to Bluffton
& I went along. Loyal & Harlan stayed here while we were gone. We had

for awhile. Mon plowed corn. Dean & I went up to Georgie's in P.M. Got back
as far as Hazels when it started to rain & then we stayed there until it
quit raining.

Nice day. Had a little shower at noon but it was nice the rest of the day. Mon
plowed corn. I washed & ironed. Dean went up to George's again in P.M. I
went over to Pearls a few minutes in P.M., took her some berries. Nell McCaffery
died this A.M.

Mighty warm day. Mon plowed corn. Arthur went up to mamas & spent most of
the day. Got his hair cut. Dean & I went up to Kate's in P.M. Stopped at
Hazel's a minute on our way back. Papa was here a minute early in A.M. Nell
McCaffery was buried this A.M.
Thurs. June 16
Pretty warm day. Mon plowed corn. The axle came for our car today & Mon
& Arthur put that in after dinner. Dean & I went over to Audry's with
Lizzie & Maxine in P.M. awhile. We went to Prosper in eve to do our trading.
Mon & I got our hair cut. Stayed at home a little while. First time I had
been there for a long while. Got home about 11.
Fri. June 17
Not very nice day. Rained quite a shower in A.M. & then we had a bad storm
in P.M. Dean went up to Georgie's early in A.M. & stayed until the mail
man went. Got the rest of the repairs for the car & when he got home they
finished fixing the car. The Joan of Arc Picnic was to be for dinner today but
it was so rainy we went in P.M. Went up & got Georgies. Had a lunch up there
and then went down to the picnic at Arthur S's. Not so many there. Just got
our supper spread out when that bad storm came up so we didn't eat much. Got
out of there as soon as we could. Got up to Arthurs & stayed there until
after 7. Quite a lot of wind & thunder & lightning & so much rain.
We took Georgies home & then it was just 8 when we got home. Roads were
pretty slippery. Dave Thomps. stopped at Arthurs too.
Sat. June 18
Nice day but cooler. We went to Decorah. Got Smith's trailer & got some
barbed & woven wire & posts. Got home about 1:15. Had dinner & then
took the trailer home. Got some cabbage & cauliflower plants at Elsie's.
Went up home a minute. Mon & I set out plants after we got home. Went over
to Will Halse's barn to a dance in eve. Quite a few there. Had a good time.
Harry Brant's Orchestra played. Got home about 2:15.
Sun. June 19
Not very nice day. Cloudy & cold. We went over to Dave's to a picnic. Had
a good time & a swell dinner. Got home from there about 6 & did up the
chores & went over to Albert E's. too see the new boy. He sure is nice.
Got home about 10:30. Marion came home with us.
Mon. June 20
Pretty warm day. Looked rainy all day. The folks fixed fence all day. Dad &
Mother P. came up about 10 A.M. & stayed the rest of the day. Uncle Jim
& Gordon were here awhile at noon. Came too see Marion.
Tues. June 21
Hot day. The folks built fence again today. Got pretty well done in A.M. so
they turned the cattle out there in P.M. & Mon plowed corn & Arthur
& Marion finished the fence. Dad & Mother P. were up again this P.M.
Dad came too see Marion. Had a great time. Dad got pretty mad. They didn't stay
for supper. We went to Prosper in eve. Stopped a minute at mama's on our way
home. Took Marion home then. We got home about 10:30.
Wed. June 22
Pretty warm day. Mon plowed corn. Papa & mama came down in A.M. Papa &
the boys went down to Langes & mama stayed here. They went home before dinner.
Dean went over to Floyd's in P.M.
Thurs. June 23
Pretty warm day. I washed & did part of my ironing & patching. Mon plowed
corn all day. The boys went up to Gate's in P.M.
Fri. June 24
Pretty warm day. Rather cloudy & rainy looking at times. Sprinkled some
in A.M. had a hard shower between 5 & 6 P.M. & again in eve & nite.
Dad & Mother P. came about 10:30 & went home about 2. Mon plowed corn.
Leonard Mc. Was here in P.M. the Joan of Arc had another picnic today but we
didn't go. Dance at the barn in eve but it was so rainy we didn't go.
Sat. June 25
Dandy nice day. Didn't do so much of anything. Scrubbed the floor in A.M. &
picked berries. The boys went over to McCauley's in P.M. & Leonard came
home with them & stayed all nite. Gust came along going to Bluffton in P.M.
so he put his mules in the barn & we drove the car down there. Mon &
I went up to Gust's after we got home from B. & got some potatoes. We went
to Bluffton in eve to the Bowery dance. Immense crowd there. Just like a Fair.
Got home a little after one.

Not very nice day. Rained quite hard about noon. Leonard went home this morn.
We went up home & spent the day.
Mon. June 27
Dandy nice day only pretty cool. Mon plowed corn. The boys & I went to B.O.
in P.M. Arthur & I went on up to Prosper a few minutes. The boys got 20%
of their money out of the B.O. Bank today. Isa & the boys were up to mama's
so they rode down as far as their gate with us.
Tues. June 28
Nice day. Mon plowed corn. Dad & Mother P. came just at noon. Ma was sick
when they came & got worse while they were here. She couldn't eat any dinner
so Dad took her home right after dinner. I went along with them. We put her
to bed & had Dr. Barfoot as soon as we got her home. Arthur & Dean came
down after me. We got home about 5. Geo & Vera & the boys came down
in eve. Geo, Vera, Junior, Mon & I went to Bluffton. It started to rain
so we didn't stay down there very long. It rained quite hard in the nite.
Wed. June 29
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Mon plowed corn. I washed & ironed. We went
up to Geo's a few minutes at noon. Dean stayed up there until supper time. Arthur
washed the car in P.M.
Thurs. June 30
Not such a nice day. Rained off & on all day. Had a hard shower in A.M.
Thunder & lightning was pretty bad. Didn't do much of anything. Went over
to Dave's in eve.
Fri. July 1
Cloudy, misty, windy & cold. Mon & the boys went up to Geo's. early
in A.M. & Geo. & Donald came home with them & stayed until after
dinner. Geo. helped Mon & Arthur do some work. Arthur took Vera & I
to Club at Mae W's. in P.M. Quite a crowd out & we sure had a swell lunch.
Got home about 6. Howard & Leonard B. were over in eve.
Sat. July 2
Nice day but cool. Mon plowed corn. Arthur sold a steer to Lloyd K. & Lyle
M. hauled it this A.M. early. He got $15 for him. He, Dean & I went to Decorah
in A.M. Stopped at Price's a minute on our way down. Arthur got new clothes
with part of his money. Dress shirt, pants, sweater, cap, oxfords, tie &
new overalls. He looks pretty nice when he gets dressed up. We went over to
the barn to the dance in eve. Only a few there but we had a good time. Got home
about 1:30.
Sun. July 3
Rained almost all day & some times pretty hard. We went up to Georgie's
& spent the day. Gust & Kate were there in P.M.
Mon. July 4
Beautiful day but rather cool. Frank & Donald came down in A.M. & rode
to Bluffton with us. Big Celebration at Bluffton. We took our dinner & a
bunch of us had a picnic dinner in Mrs. Brittendell's yard. Had a good program
of games & stunts. B.O. & Hesper played ball. B.O. beat. The boys &
I came home & did chores & then we went back in eve. Some crowd. They
sure had a crowd P.M. & eve. We got home about 1.
Tues. July 5
Nice day. Some warmer. Mon & Arthur hauled manure. Arthur took Kate &
I to Prosper in P.M. Stopped at mama's a minute on our way up & at Vera's
coming back. Dean stayed with Donald. Aunt Eunice, Aunt Lissa, Ruth, Neva, Vincil
& Lavonne Emery were at mama's.
Wed. July 6
Not such a nice day. Sprinkled some & looked rainy most of the day. Rained
quite hard late in P.M. Mon plowed corn. Arland Arnold was here in P.M.
Thurs. July 7
Nice day but pretty windy. Arthur plowed corn until about 3:30. Mon didn't feel
very good so he did other things. I washed & ironed. Mon, Dean & I went
over to Harold L's. in eve.
Fri. July 8
Pretty warm day. Did a little of everything. Arthur plowed corn all day. Hazel
O. was down & spent the P.M. Dean went up to Geo's.
Sat. July 9
Not such a nice day. Rained off & on all day. They hauled manure in A.M.
& Mon plowed corn in P.M. Arthur went up home & stayed all nite. We
went up & got Geo's in eve and went to Bluffton & did some trading &
then stopped at the barn to the dance on our way back home. Just nicely got
there when it started to rain & it sure did rain & thunder & lightning.
Didn't let up raining until about 2. We took Geo's home & it was 2:40 when
we got home. Roads pretty muddy.
Sun. July 10
Nice day. Had a picnic here today & picked gooseberries. Papa & mama,
Claude's, Lester's, Gust & Kate, Geo G's., Ole & Gladys, Maude &
Herb A. & the kids, Lizzie & Maxine. Had a scrumptious dinner. Picked
quite a lot of berries. They had lunch before they went home.
Mon. July 11
Nice day. Mon mowed in A.M. Dean & Arthur hauled manure. Arthur plowed corn
in P.M. & Mon did odd jobs. Aunt Lissa, Mettie, Aunt Eunice, Neva, Ruth,
Vinnie & Sonny were here awhile in P.M. & picked gooseberries. We went
to Bluffton in eve to a Home Talent Play. "The Path Across the Hill."
It was fine. Got home about 11.
Tues. July 12
Nice day. Mighty hot. Arthur mowed in A.M. & they bro't in 1 load of hay
in A.M. & 2 in P.M. We went up to Gust's awhile in eve.
Wed. July 13
Pretty hot day. I washed. The men put up hay. We went up to Gust's awhile in
eve. Dale & Arland were here in P.M.
Thurs. July 14
Hot day. The men put up hay. Lizzie & Maxine were over in P.M. awhile &
we picked some gooseberries. The boys & I went to Bluffton early in A.M.
Fri. July 15
Hot day. Hayed again today. Club at Ella Reeds today but I couldn't go. No way
to go. We went up to Gust's & Geo's and Floyd's & Albert E's. in eve.
To see about haying.
Sat. July 16
Pretty hot day. Arthur & Dean went over to Floyd's in A.M. & got Floyd's
wagon & then they loaded up two loads of hay & after dinner took them
over to Albert's. They got home about 5:30. Geo & Vera, Gust & Kate
came down here in eve & went over to the barn too the dance with us. Quite
a crowd there & we had a good time. Got home about 2:45.
Sun. July 17
Pretty hot day. Mon & I went up home & spent the day. The boys expected
company so they didn't go (& then they didn't come). Lena & Wilma came
& spent the P.M. Ball game in B.O. between Hesper & B.O. & the men
went to that. Hesper beat. Dave was over in eve awhile.
Mon. July 18
Pretty hot day. Mon mowed most of the A.M. They put up 1 load of hay in A.M.
& 1 in P.M. Mon & I picked some gooseberries in P.M. Mon & I went
to Prosper in eve. Arthur stayed at Geo's. & Dean stayed at mama's while
we were up there. We stopped at mama's a minute on our way home & also at
Geo's.
Tues. July 19
Hot, windy, dusty day. Dust was just fierce. Mon & the boys loaded up 2
loads of hay in A.M. & took them over to Albert's in P.M. & when they
got home from there they got a little jag of hay that was still down to put
in our barn. Dad P. came just at supper time & stayed for supper.
Wed. July 20
Pretty hot day. The boys & I took Mon up to Geo's early in A.M. (& he
went on over to Ted Emmon's to help harvest). Dean stayed at Geo's & Vera,
Junior, Arthur & I went to Decorah. Went to Prosper first. Stopped at B.O.
on our way back & papa went to Decorah with us. (We took his car). Stopped
at Price's a minute. Got quite a few things in Dec. Got a new pair of slippers.
Got binding twine $10.50. We got back home about 12. Got a lunch & Arthur
went up Ted's to work too. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. in eve.
Thurs. July 21
Not quite so warm. Had a little shower in A.M. Mon & Arthur were at Ted's
& Geo's again today. Dean went up to Geo's in P.M.
Fri. July 22
Quite a nice day. Mon & Arthur were at Geo's today. I washed & ironed.
Sat. July 23
Pretty hot day. Mon & Arthur were at Geo's again today. They finished up
there tonite. I did a little of everything.
Sun. July 24
Pretty hot day. Papa was here awhile in A.M. Mon & Geo. started cutting
our grain this A.M. but had trouble all day so they only got a couple of rounds.
They had too go to Bluffton in A.M. to get bolts. The boys & I went over
to Ions for dinner. Papa & mama & Claudes were there too. We took Geo.
home after the chores were done & stopped at Gust's awhile. They had a dance
at the barn tonite & we went over there a few minutes when we came home
from Gust's. Didn't get out. Looked like a big crowd & the music was good.

Mon. July 25
Dandy nice day until about 3 P.M. a storm came up. Looked pretty bad but only
rained hard here & the wind blew some. Ted E., papa & Frank G. were
here to help harvest today. Had quite a bit of trouble with the binder until
about 11 but it worked good after that. Donald came down in P.M. Mrs. Arthur
Stoskoph was killed by lightning in the storm this P.M. The lightning wasn't
so bad here.
Tues. July 26
Dandy nice day. Papa, Ted & Frank were here again today harvesting. Jack
Whalen came down with his binder & cut in P.M. so we had all kinds of grain
cutting. We went to Bluffton a minute in eve. Frank went with us.
Wed. July 27
Nice day. Plenty warm. Papa, Ted, Frank & Arnold D. were here again today.
They finished cutting the north piece at noon & Ted went home after dinner.
Arnold & Frank went soon after. Mon finished cutting the south piece about
3 & papa & Arthur finished shocking it. They went out in the north piece
to finish that but the hogs were in there so they had to fix fence. Mon finished
mowing the rest of the hay about 6.
Thurs. July 28
Nice day. Not so hot. Papa came down again today & helped put up hay. Dean
went home with him & stayed all nite. Mrs. Stoskoph was buried this P.M.
Fri. July 29
Nice day. Quite cool. Papa went to Krumms in A.M. & Tom Knox in P.M. threshing
for us. Mon & the boys finished haying today. Mon & Arthur took Vera
& Junior & I to Club at Olive's at noon. She had quite a crowd &
a good lunch. Mon & the boys came after us about 5.
Sat. July 30
Nice day. Mon went over to Tom Knox's in A.M. to thresh & at Geo's in P.M.
The boys & I went up to Geo's too. Kate helped Vera too. We went to B.O.
in eve.

Rather cloudy day & rather cool. We went up home & spent the day. Claude's
came up in P.M. too. We went up to Gust's awhile in eve.
Mon. Aug. 1
Not very nice day. Rained some early in A.M. We were at Geo's. all day threshing.
They finished about 5. Kate helped too.
Tues. Aug. 2
Rained in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Didn't do much of anything.
Went over to Floyd's awhile in P.M. Mon & the boys went over there about
4 & didn't get back until about 8. They had tractors there trying to move
the granary.
Wed. Aug. 3
Dandy nice day. Mon threshed at Ole's. He & I went over to Jarstads after
he got home too see Mr. J. about threshing at Gusts. We went to Prosper in eve.
Gust & Kate went along with us.
Thurs. Aug. 4
Dandy nice day. We went up to Gust's early in A.M. to thresh. Arthur went to
meet mama. She started to walk down to Gust's. Vera helped too. Gladys came
up there in A.M. awhile. She wasn't very good natured. They finished at Gust's
about 2 & then we came home & Mon got the team & went to Lovlien's.
We had our first ripe tomato today.
Fri. Aug. 5
Dandy nice day. Rained a little very early in A.M. Mon went threshing at Lovliens
& Gilbertsons. I washed & ironed.
Sat. Aug. 6
Rained some in A.M. but cleared off & was just fine in P.M. Mon went to
Gilbertsons in P.M. to thresh. We went to Bluffton in eve to do some trading
& then stopped at the barn on our way home to the dance. Not many there
but we sure had a good time. Got home a little after 1.
Sun. Aug. 7
Dandy nice day. We went to Padden's about 8:30 & didn't get home until about
7 P.M. Sure had a good time. B.O. & Castalia played ball in Francis hay
field in P.M. B.O. beat 13 to 6. Quite a few came down from B.O. & had a
picnic dinner on Ruths lawn. Mrs. R. Padden & Oscar were at Ruth's for dinner
too & then Happy L. came in & ate dinner too. Had a good ball game.
Mon. Aug. 8
Nice day. Arthur & I went to Decorah early in A.M. to get supplies for the
threshers. I got $1.10 worth of frankfurters & 75¢ worth of hamburgers.
Mon threshed at Bennies in A.M. & then they moved here. Started threshing
here about 3. Vera & the boys, Kate, Isa & the boys were here too. Isa
stayed until they got the chores done & we took her home. Went on up to
B.O. a minute.
Tues. Aug. 9
Rained quite a little shower in A.M. but it cleared off & was fine the rest
of the day. Mon & the boys went over to Floyds in A.M. We finished our threshing
in P.M. Vera, Kate & Isa helped me again.
Wed. Aug. 10
Nice day. Mon went to Jarstads to thresh in A.M. & at Floyds in P.M. The
boys & I went over to Floyds about 8:30 & I helped Gladys all day. The
folks went home & did chores then came back after me. We got home about
9:20.
Thurs. Aug. 11
Dandy nice day. Mon was at Floyds until about 4. The boys & I were down
to Claude's until about that time too. They threshed down there. Mama &
Mettie were there helping Olive too. Isa, Lester & the boys, Aunt Lissa
& Neva were there in P.M.
Fri. Aug. 12
Nice day. Quite windy. I washed in A.M. Mon & Arthur helped Jack finish
stacking in A.M. Maxine was over here in A.M. a minute & I was over there.
Mon took me up to Gladys at noon & I went to Club at Valeda's with them.
Vera, Alice, Gladys, Aleda & I went. Quite a crowd. Had a nice time &
a fine lunch. Mon & Arthur came after us. Dean stayed with Donald &
then he went home with us.
Sat. Aug. 13
Dandy nice day. Donald came down just after we were up & said Kate was sick
& they wanted us to take her to the Dr. so Mon & I went right away &
the boys did the chores. We took her to Dr. Lannin. Got home about 11. Dean
was up to Donalds & he stayed up there until P.M. Mon went threshing at
Bill Erickson's in P.M. We went to Bluffton in eve. Went down to the bowery.
Stayed there until the dance was over. The boys & I didn't get out of the
car. Got home about 2. Sure saw lots going on.
Sun. Aug. 14
Not very nice day. Looked rainy most of the day. Dave was over awhile in A.M.
We started up home about 10:30 stopped at Whalen's & some thing went wrong
with the steering wheel so we were there until almost 1 before they got it fixed.
Stopped to see Kate. She is not very well. Got up home too late for dinner but
had some any way. Olive & her kids & Isa & her boys were there too.
We came home about 4:30 & stopped at Geo's & Gust's on our way home.
Kate feels a little better. Mon & the boys took Gust to Bluffton too do
some trading. Little son born to Hazel & Leslie Pierce this A.M.
Mon. Aug. 15
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Mon threshed at
Bills again today. He got home about 5. The boys & went up to Vera's early
in A.M. to help her can corn. We canned 32 qts. Stopped too see Kate. She is
better today.
Tues. Aug. 16
Nice day. Pretty hot. Clouded up in P.M. & we had a hard rain about 4. Dean
went over to Isa's in A.M. & stayed until about 3:30. Arthur went to the
river in A.M. with Ole to get a load of sand. Pearl & Floyd were here in
A.M.
Wed. Aug. 17
Nice day but cool. I washed & ironed. The folks did a little of everything.
Pearl was here for dinner. Olaf L. was here in P.M. selling woolen goods &
other goods. Mon bought a couple of every day shirts & some socks. Mon,
Dean & I went to Bluffton in eve too do some trading. Went up to Gust's
when we got back from there. Kate is some better.
Thurs. Aug. 18
Dandy nice day. Quite cool & windy. Mama & papa came down early in A.M.
& bro't some apples & Mon was up to Jacks & got some more so we
canned 25 ½ qts. of sauce, 8 qts. of apple pickles & 1 qt. of tomatoes.
Arthur didn't feel very well all day.
Fri. Aug. 19
Nice day. I canned 4 qts. of apple pickles, 5 of dill pickles & 4 qts. of
tomatoes. Mon & Arthur went to Prosper in A.M. & Dean went up to Donald's
& spent the day. Mon went threshing at Seelye's in P.M. Dad & Mother
P. came up for supper. Lizzie & Maxine were here awhile in eve. Arthur doesn't
feel very good.
Sat. Aug. 20
Dandy nice day. Mon threshed at Seelye's all day. I did a little of everything.
Arthur didn't feel so well in A.M. but he got better in P.M. so he felt pretty
good. Dave stopped in P.M. & said Marion was quite sick so when they got
the chores done Arthur, Mon & I went over. (Dean went to the barn). I didn't
go up to see Marion but Mon did a few minutes. He had been so bad all day they
wouldn't let any one in. They have a trained nurse. Miss Halverson. We went
over to the barn to the dance when we got back from there. Will & Walter
Norton played the violin & banjo & different ones played the organ.
I played awhile. Had a good time. Got home about 2. Little daughter born to
Pearl & Howard early this A.M. I went over too see her in A.M. She is sure
nice.

Dandy nice day. We were alone all day. We were over to Howard's awhile in A.M.
& the boys were over again in P.M. Mon & I went to Bluffton late in
P.M.

Nice day. Did a little of everything. Went over to Howard's awhile in P.M. Dell,
Mettie & Clara Mc. were there too.
Tues. Aug. 23
Pretty hot day. Hazel Olson came down after me early in A.M. to help her with
her threshers. Mon helped up there too. Dean went up with me. Arthur went over
to Isa's. Lottie Dawley helped Hazel too. Loyal came home with Arthur.
Wed. Aug. 24
Nice day. Did a little of everything. Went over to Howard's in P.M. We went
up town in eve. Went up home awhile. Olive & her kids were there too. We
stopped down by the hall awhile & listened to the music. Dance at the Hall.
Quite a storm came up while we were up there. Blowed hard all the way home.
Dust was just terrible. Our house was just full of dust when we got home.
Thurs. Aug. 25
Quite nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & we had quite a storm. Rained
hard. I washed in A.M. Picked cukes in P.M. & Mon & I took them up to
Mrs. Whalen.
Fri. Aug. 26
Rather cloudy cool day. Did a little of everything in A.M. Mon took me as far
as Gladys' in P.M. to Club but Club was postponed for 2 wks so we stayed there
awhile & came home. Stopped at Geo's & Gust's on our way home. I went
over to Pearl's a few minutes after we got home.
Sat. Aug. 27
(Nancy Downey passed away about 5 A.M.) Nice day. Mon, Dean & I went to
Decorah early in A.M. Got back home about 11 & got Arthur & Loyal &
went & got Kate & Gust. Gust & the boys stopped in B.O. & Kate,
Man & I went to Mabel to the Dr. (for Kate). Stopped at Walt's on our way
over too see how he was. Got back to Walt's about 1:30 & had a lunch &
then Mon took Walt to Decorah to the Dr. I rode over to B.O. with them &
stayed with mama while they were gone to Decorah. They got back about 5 &
then we all came home. Stopped at Geog's on our way home. Had some cheese &
crax, etc. Got home & did our chores & went to the Barn Dance. Isa stopped
here & went over to the barn with us. Loyal went home tonite. Oscar Anderson's
played at the barn. Not such a big crowd there at first but it started to rain
so they left the bowery & came to the barn so there was too much of a crowd
for the room. We got home about 2 but didn't get much sleep until daylight.
Henry (?Arby?) slid in the ditch up at the corner. Mon was up there.
Sun. Aug. 28
Rained hard until about 10. We went up home for dinner. Mama was up to (?Nev's?),
just papa at home. Lester's came just after we got there but they had had their
dinner. Isa & I went to the church right after dinner. I had to practice.
Arthur, Zoa, Vera, Louise N. & I sang for the funeral. We sang, "No
Night There," "Some Day the Silver Cord Will Break" & "Abide
With Me." Mr. (?Vick?) preached the funeral sermon. I went back up home
after the service. Mama was home & Olive & the kids were there too.
We came home about 6.
Mon. Aug. 29
Dandy nice day but pretty hot. Was in the garden most of the A.M. Canned 12
qts. of tomatoes after dinner & then we went over to see Marion the rest
of the P.M. He is getting along pretty good. Mon & I went over to Howard
awhile in eve. They call their girl Verna Girleen.
Tues. Aug. 30
Pretty warm. Went over to Pearls a few minutes in A.M. She went over to her
mothers this A.M. too stay awhile. I gathered stuff out of the garden most of
the rest of the day.
Wed. Aug. 31
Nice day, but cooler. I canned tomatoes & chili sauce today. Mon went over
& helped Dave early in A.M. We went to Bluffton at noon & right back
again. Went over to Mettie's late in P.M. & got some apples to can.
Thurs. Sept. 1
Dandy nice day. Rather cool. Arthur went up & got mama early in A.M. &
got some apples on the Robinson place so we canned 26 qts. of apples & did
quite a few other things. We took mama home about 5. Howard was over awhile
in eve.
Fri. Sept. 2
Nice day. Some warmer. Arthur & I went to Decorah with papa early in A.M.
Got back about 11. Stopped at Prices a minute on our way home. Annie, Bess,
Ray, Percy & Henry A. were here awhile in P.M. Henry & Harold L. came
over in P.M. & then Mon went up town with them.
Sat. Sept. 3
Nice day. Pretty warm. I did a little of everything in A.M. Mon & Dean went
to B.O. Arthur hauled manure. We went over too see Marion in P.M. He is feeling
quite a little better. Went to Bluffton in eve to do some trading & then
back up to the Barn to the dance. Same orchestra. Quite a crowd. We got home
about 2.

Nice day but cool. We went up home about 12. Papa, Mon & the boys went to
the ball game. Dell & Mettie came up home too & then Dell went to the
ball game. We were all there for supper. Olaf & Kate were over & spent
the eve.
Mon. Sept. 5
Beautiful day but cool. School started today. With Annie Whalen as teacher again.
Arthur wouldn't go to High School. We went up to Gusts early in A.M. & took
Kate to the Dr. Gust went along too. We got home about 12. Jack & Mrs. Whalen
& then kids were here awhile at noon. I canned tomatoes in P.M. Mon mowed
hay. Arthur did a little of everything.
Tues. Sept. 6
Nice day but rather cool. Mon finished mowing & he & Arthur fixed fence.
I made chili sauce & canned tomatoes in P.M. Isa & Lester came at noon
& picked hazel nuts in P.M. The boys came home with Dean from school &
they stayed here for supper.
Wed. Sept. 7
Dandy nice day. Arthur started to high school today. He drove the car. Mr. Norlie
& Maynard Newhouse teachers. Mon raked & bunched up his hay today. Mon
& I went up to Gusts a minute in eve & then to Bluffton to do some trading.
Thurs. Sept. 8
Beautiful day. Pretty warm. Arthur drove the car too school again today. Mon
& Gust finished putting up the hay. I drove the horse on the fork. Mon &
I went up & got Geo. & Vera in eve & went to B.O. We girls went
to the church to practice.
Fri. Sept. 9
Pretty hot day. Mon & I went with Arthur when he went to school. Went up
home & washed. Went to Club at Anita's with Elsie. Quite a crowd out. Ruth
P. came up. She & I rode back to B.O. with Mae W. & Katherine H. We
went up to mama's. Mon, Francis & Arthur were there. Vera & Bertha G.
rode home from B.O. with Arthur, Ruth & I. Mon came with Francis. They stayed
for supper & until about 9. Mon & I got a hair cut today.

Dandy nice day. Dean went up home & spent the day. He got a hair cut. Arthur
went over to McCauley's in P.M. I did a little of everything. Went over to Pearls
awhile in P.M. We went to Bluffton in eve & then back to the Barn to the
Dance. Oscar A. played. Quite a crowd. Got home about 2.

Nice day. I went to church in A.M. Bishop Edwin F. Lee preached. Large crowd
out. Went up home for dinner. Claude's, Lesters & us were there for dinner.
Dell, Mettie & Aunt Lissa came in P.M. Ball game in B.O. in P.M. so the
men all went to that. Rained about 6 & then off & on all nite. Quite
a bit of thunder & lightning. Little son born to Jim & Mary Murdock
this A.M.
Mon. Sept. 12
Rained hard most of A.M. & some in P.M. Cleared off late in P.M. & was
just beautiful. Didn't do much of anything.
Tues. Sept. 13
Nice day. Mon worked with the corn binder. Jack W. came down & helped him
in P.M. I washed & ironed. Decorah Fair started today.
Wed. Sept. 14
Dandy nice day. No school in B.O. today so Arthur was home. Mon & I went
to Mabel early in A.M. for repairs for the binder. Kate went along. Mon &
Arthur got the binder fixed in A.M. after we got home so Mon went to Jack's
cutting corn in P.M. Mother P. & Sid were up a few minutes in P.M.

Dandy nice day. I did a little of everything. Went over to Pearls a few minutes
in A.M. Mon went up to Jack's today.
Fri. Sept. 16
Dandy nice day. Mon cut corn for Jack again today. Mon, Dean & I went to
Bluffton in eve a minute.

Dandy nice day. Mon cut corn at Jacks today. Dean was up there most of the A.M.
Arthur went over to Morgan's in P.M. We didn't go to the dance in eve. A bunch
of the kids were over & got our lantern.
Sun. Sept. 18
Rained quite a little shower early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice
day. Mama, papa, Claude's & Lester's were here & spent the day. We had
a picnic dinner & a dandy too. In P.M. we woman folks & the kids &
papa gathered hazel nuts, butter nuts & elderberries. Claude, Lester &
Mon went to B.O. to the Ball game. B.O. & Decorah. Decorah won. The folks
all went home about 5 except Lesters, they didn't go until about 6. Mon &
Lester went to Bluffton a minute.

Not such a nice day. Rained off & on all day. Started raining about 4 &
rained quite hard part of the time. Quite hard thunder & lightning. Mon
finished cutting corn for Jack this A.M. Arthur didn't come home tonite.
Tues. Sept. 20
Our 16th Wedding Anniversary. Dandy nice day. Rather cool. We went up to Gust's
& Geo's early in A.M. awhile. Came back home & then went up to Claude
Headington's & picked 2 sacks of apples (.25¢ per bus). Went up to
mama's for dinner. Got home about 2 & then Mon went out & cut corn the
rest of the P.M. The Whalen children came home from school with Dean & gathered
butternuts & then Jack came down about 5:30 after them. We went to Bluffton
in eve a minute.

Nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon cut corn. Jack shocked for him.
Thurs. Sept. 22
Dandy nice day. Mon cut corn. Jack & Chas. W. shocked. Howard & Leonard
B. were over at supper time. Mon took them to Mabel in eve. Slight frost tonite.
Fri. Sept. 23
Dandy nice day. Mon finished cutting corn this P.M. Chas shocked in A.M. &
then Jack came in P.M. & helped him. Otto Koenig was here for dinner. I
walked up to Gladys' in P.M. to Club. Quite a crowd out & a dandy lunch.
Arthur & Billie L. came home that way so I had a ride home.
Sat. Sept. 24
Dandy nice day. Did a little of everything. Mon & the boys picked up a load
of corn in P.M. The first they have gathered for the hogs. We went to Bluffton
in eve & then stopped at the Barn Dance on our way home. Had a good time.
Got home about 1:45.
Sun. Sept. 25
Nice day but cool. We went up home for the day. Big Celebration at Prosper today.
The official opening of the road since it is all paved between Chicago &
the Twin Cities. Cars until you couldn't see. Papa, Lester, Mon & Arthur
went up to Prosper in P.M. It was estimated there were between 12000 & 20000
people there and there could be from the amount of cars from the south not thinking
of those from the north east & west we didn't see. We got home about 6:30.
B.O. & Decorah played ball up there & B.O. beat 4 to 3.

Didn't look so good part of the time today. Sprinkled some, but wasn't so bad.
We picked up a load of corn in P.M.
Tues. Sept. 27
Dandy nice day. Papa & mama were down all day. Mon & papa picked seed
corn & mama & I washed & cleaned up the house some.
Wed. Sept. 28
Dandy day. Papa & mama were down again today. Frank Gates came down in A.M.
& helped Mon & papa pick up a load of corn. In P.M. Mon & papa dug
potatoes. Mama & I went over to see Pearl & the baby & when we came
home we picked up potatoes. We sure have a swell crop of potatoes this year.
We went to Bluffton a minute in eve.

Beautiful day. Papa came down in A.M. & helped Mon finish the potatoes.
He went home at noon & Mon went up to Geo's. in P.M. to cut corn. Lester's
were here awhile in eve.
Fri. Sept. 30
Beautiful day. Mon cut corn for Geo. I did a little of everything. The B.O.
H.S. played basket ball at Ridgeway in P.M. Arthur took a load over there. It
was about 7:15 when he got home B.O. got beat.
Sat. Oct. 1
Beautiful day. Pretty warm. The boys & I went to B.O. early in A.M. &
then went to Decorah with papa. Arthur drove. Got a sack of flour. Got back
up home about noon & had dinner there. Came home right after dinner &
gathered our walnuts. Mon got thro' at Geo's about 2 & came home. We went
out & got a jag of corn after he got home. Mart L., papa & mama were
here a little while about supper time. We went to Bluffton in eve. Jim gave
away 5 sacks of flour & I had one of the lucky numbers so I got a sack of
flour. Stopped at the barn to the dance on our way home. Had a pretty good crowd
& a good time. Got home about 2.
Sun. Oct. 2
Quite a warm day but looked cloudy most of the day. Maxine came over about 8
A.M. & said Mother P. was quite bad & they wanted us to come down so
Mon & I went down there as soon as we had breakfast. Dean & Arthur went
to Claudes. Mother P. is pretty bad. She had a stroke yesterday A.M. & hasn't
known anyone or much of anything since. Her right side is paralyzed. They had
sent for all of the boys. Mon & Sid went to Calmar about 11 too meet Charley.
Stanley drove thro' & got there about 4. They got a telephone call from
Warren about 4:30 that he was at West Union so Sid & Stanley went after
him. We came home about 5. Stopped at Claude's & got the boys. Papa &
mama & Lester's were there & spent the day too. Little son born to Hazel
& Art Olson tonite.
Mon. Oct. 3
Not very nice day. Started to sprinkle & rain about 11 & kept it up
until about 4. Mon & I got a jag of corn in A.M. & went down to Decorah
in P.M. Ma is just about the same. We came home about 5:15. We went to Prosper
in eve. Went in to see Stub & Fannye a minute. Stopped at mama's a few minutes
on our way home.
Tues. Oct. 4
Cold, windy day. We did a little of everything. Went up to Art's too see the
baby awhile in P.M. Went over to Dave's after supper & called down to Decorah
& they said Ma was very low, so we did up the chores & went down there.
Chas. & Helen had just got there a little while before we did & Catherine
& Uncle Will came in the night. I didn't get much sleep & Mon not any.
Mama & papa came down here & stayed with the boys. They got Irene Musser
(trained nurse) today too care for Ma.
Wed. Oct. 5
Beautiful day but cool. Ma is just alive and that is all. We thought she was
dying at noon but she rallied again. Cora Brickner was here & helped in
P.M. & eve. Florence & Harry Yager were over in eve. Uncle Oliver &
Uncle Henry were here in P.M. a few minutes. Mon & I slept a little while
in the night. Mon got up about 2 & I about 3. No one got much sleep. 32º at 8 P.M. Froze hard tonite.
Thurs. Oct. 6
Beautiful day. Ma passed away very peacefully at 6:45 A.M. Dad stood up under
it much better than we thought for. We had breakfast & then we came home.
Got home about 9:30. Papa had gone up to Jack's too thresh & Mon went up
there too see him. He thought it was too hard for papa so he went & got
Gust to help in papa's place & papa came down here at noon. He & mama
got a load of corn in P.M. & Mon & I slept. They went home about 5:30.
Harlan & Loyal came home with Dean from school & Lester & Isa came
for them about supper time. They stayed until after 8. Lester helped the boys
milk.
Fri. Oct. 7
Beautiful day. Papa & mama came down early in A.M. Mon went to B.O. early
in A.M. too get a shave & hair cut. When he got back from there we went
to Bluffton too do some trading & then went to Decorah. Helped up home until
about 4 P.M. we went down town. Mon got a new suit & all too go with it.
I got a new good dress & two house dresses. We divided Mother P's. clothes
this P.M. They gave most everything to me because nothing much would fit the
other girls. They gave me her new summer coat too & it is a beauty. We got
home about 7 and the boys got ready & we took them down to Decorah. Stopped
up home a minute & then Stanley took us down too Willis & Ness Funeral
Home so the boys could see Grandma. She looks so nice. We stayed up home until
about 10. Walter & Alta Yager were there too. Club at Beatrice Anderson's
today.
Sat. Oct. 8
Not very nice day. Cold & dreary. Pretty hard wind. Papa & mama came
down early in A.M. Mon, Arthur & I went to Decorah about 10 to the funeral.
Cora Brickner & Flora Bucknell were there & helped all day. Quite a
crowd out to the service at the house & a very large crowd at the church.
Such beautiful flowers & so many of them. The 5 boys & Walter Yager
were pall bearers. Dad stood up just fine. We stayed there until after 7. Mama
went home in P.M. & papa stayed with Dean until we got home & then Arthur
went home with him. Today was papa's & mama's 42nd wedding anniversary.
Sun. Oct. 9
Not very nice day. Cold. Started to rain about noon & kept it up the rest
of the P.M. Turned into sleet & snow about 5 & we had quite a little
snow & blizzard in the nite. We went up home early in A.M. & spent the
day. Claude's & Lester's were there too. Had a good time. We stopped at
Gust's a minute on our way home.

Not so nice in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Mon went to Jack's
in P.M. They finished threshing.
Tues. Oct. 11
Not very nice day. Floyd A. came over in A.M. & he & Mon butchered a
little pig. Mon went over there in P.M. & they butchered a big pig there.
We went up home a little while in eve. Gust & Kate went along too.
Wed. Oct. 12
Not very nice day. Rained, snowed & sleeted. Mon picked a jag of corn in
A.M. & I fried down some meat. We went up & got Gust & Kate after
dinner & went to Decorah. I spent most of the time up with Dad. We got home
about 6.
Thurs. Oct. 13
Beautiful day. We went to B.O. early in A.M. with the team & mule wagon.
Gust & Kate went along. Went up home & then up to Mrs. Robinson's house
& got some of her furniture. The place is sold & the other folks want
to move in so the furniture has to be out of there. I only took 6 chairs but
Kate got quite a few things. We stayed at mama's for dinner. Isa was there too.
I started to make kraut but had to come home so mama & Isa finished it.
Mon & I got a jag of corn after we got home. We went over to Lester's in
eve but no one home so we stopped awhile at Art & Hazels on our way home.

Beautiful day. Mon shredded at Jack's all day. I washed & ironed & scrubbed
& did quite a few other things. Kate was down a few minutes late in P.M.
We were up there a few minutes in eve.
Sat. Oct. 15
Not very nice in A.M. rainy & misty & cold. Cleared off & was nice
in P.M. though. We went over to Dave's a minute early in A.M. & then went
up to Gust's too shred. Mon & Dean came home in P.M. & picked a load
of corn. Arthur came down after Mon & Dean at supper time & they were
up to Gust's for supper. Vera helped Kate too. Sure had a dandy dinner &
supper.

Beautiful day. We were home alone all day until about 4 P.M. Dad & Sid came.
They stayed for supper & until about 8:30. Papa & mama came just as
we got thro' supper & they stayed until about 9.
Mon. Oct. 17
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. some. We picked up corn in A.M.
& picked a load in P.M. Mon, Dean & I went to Bluffton too do some trading
after we got in from the corn field. Mon, Dean & I went up to get Gust &
Kate in eve & we went to B.O. too hear the Cotton Blossom Singers. Four
blind Negro boys from the Piney Woods School. They were fine. Stopped at Gust's
a while on our way home & ate watermelon. Got home about 10:30.
Tues. Oct. 18
Not very nice day. Damp & cool. We did a little of everything. Papa was
here a minute in A.M. We gathered some grapes in P.M. Mrs. Hruska was here awhile
in P.M. The B.O. High School played basket ball at Ossian this P.M. & Arthur
took papa's car & took a load down there so he didn't get home until about
7. Mon & I went over to Happy's & Audry's in eve but no one home.

Not very nice day. We picked corn in A.M. & Mon helped Howard shred in P.M.

Not such a nice day. Rather cloudy & mighty windy. Mon started plowing in
A.M. I washed & did part of my ironing.
Fri. Oct. 21
Beautiful day. Mon plowed in A.M. No school today, "Teachers Institute"
so both boys were home. Mon & Dean took me to B.O. at noon & I caught
a ride from there with Elsie S., Dean & Vera to Club at Florence Bakers.
Quite a few out & a nice time & dandy lunch. I walked home from Vera's.
Mon & Dean got corn in P.M. & Arthur hauled manure. Mon, Dean &
I went to Bluffton a minute in eve.

Nice until about 3 P.M. it started to sprinkle. Rained quite hard about supper
time & during the eve. Mon & the boys fixed fence in A.M. & Dean,
Mon & I got a load of corn in P.M. & Arthur hauled manure. We had 16
more little pigs today. 2 sows.

Not very nice day. Cloudy & rain. We went up home for dinner & then
went down to see Dad P. & Sid in P.M. Got home about 5:30.

Not such a nice day. Cloudy & cold. We picked a load of corn in A.M. &

Not very nice day. Papa & mama came about 10 & were here for dinner.
Papa helped Mon get a load of corn after dinner & then he & mama went
home about 3. Mon & I went over to Howards awhile in P.M. It rained &
snowed in eve. The white cow had a calf.

Nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. Rained some in eve. I washed & ironed
& scrubbed. Mon finished plowing that piece in P.M. & then dragged it.
Howard & Ed D. were here awhile in eve & then Mon took them up town.
They got back about 10. There was a party at the B.O. school tonite but Arthur
didn't feel like going.

Not very nice day. Cloudy & cold. We picked a load of corn in P.M. Went
to Bluffton a few minutes in eve. Arthur didn't feel very well today but he
went too school tho'.
Fri. Oct. 28
Terribly windy day. Not so cold tho'. Wind in the south until eve, it switched
around to the north & got colder. Arthur is some better today. We went over
to Lester's in eve & then on up to B.O. Big dance in the hall. We stopped
a little while but the boys & I didn't get out of the car.
Sat. Oct. 29
Not very nice day. Cold & windy. Mon & Arthur picked corn in A.M. Dean
& I did a lot of things here at the house. They took me up town about 2:30.
The Joan of Arc had their oyster supper. Elsie, Miriam & I cooked the oysters.
Had a pretty good crowd. Price 20 (??). Went up home after we were thro' at
the Hall. Stayed up there until about 11.

Not very nice day. Terribly windy. We were alone all day & eve.
Mon. Oct. 31
Windy, cold day again. We picked a load of corn in A.M. Went up home in eve.
The kids had a big time with their Hallow Een stunts. Billie L. rode home with
us. Got home about 11. Little son born to Pearl & Kenneth Darling this A.M.
Claude Robinson died at the Veteran Hospital at Ft. Snelling.

Not such a bad day. We got a load of corn in P.M. Mon was up to Gust's in A.M.
& down to Bluffton.

Nice day. Quite warm. I washed & ironed. Dad & Sid came up in P.M. &
Mon went up to B.O. with them. They just stopped here a minute when they came
back. We went up home in eve. Olive & the kids were there too. Got home
about 11:30.
Thurs. Nov. 3
Beautiful day but rather cool. We went up home about 10 A.M. Kate went along
too. Claude Robinson was buried at B.O. this P.M. at 1 o'clock. Ruth & Bill,
two lady friends a gentleman friend & the undertaker & his driver were
at mamas for dinner. Isa, Lester & Harlan were there too. Arthur, Zoa, Vera,
Philip & I sang for the funeral (I played). We sang "Going Down the
Valley", "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere", & "God Will
Take Care of You." Quite a crowd out. First military funeral I ever saw.
Went back up home after the funeral & they all had lunch before starting
home. Ruth stayed at mama's until tomorrow. Arthur & Billie rode home with
us. Got home about 5. Mon took Lester & Harlan too Mabel in A.M. & (?Haddie?)
got two teeth pulled.
Fri. Nov. 4
Not very nice day until late in P.M. We got a load of corn in A.M. Gust was
here for dinner. It started raining just after dinner & rained quite hard
for awhile. Club at Luella's but I had no way too go. Ruth & Mr. Ferris
came over here after Club & stayed for supper & until about 7:30. Happy
& Audry were here a minute in eve.
Sat. Nov. 5
Beautiful day. Quite warm. We sold hogs to Lloyd & Stub R. hauled them this
A.M. 4 old sows aver. 345 lbs. (1388 lbs.) @ 2.10 cwt. & 13 shoats aver.
243 lbs. (3170 lbs.) @ $2.75 bringing $114.15. Mon & the boys went with
the hogs to Prosper & then on to Mabel to get the check cashed. They stopped
at B.O. on their way home & got the car fixed so they didn't get home until
after 3. Mon & Arthur picked a jag of corn after they got home. We went
to Bluffton in eve too do some trading & then up home a few minutes. Party
at Cecil W's. tonite but we didn't go.

Beautiful day. Papa & mama came down & spent the day. The men all went
hunting in P.M. Johnnie Wernett came over & spent the eve with the boys.
Mon & I went up to Gust's. Olaf & Kate, & Geo. & Vera &
the kids were there.

Cloudy in A.M. but quite warm. Started to rain about 11:30 & kept it up
the rest of the P.M. & nite. We got a load of corn in A.M. Mag had a calf
this A.M. Mr. Brown took the boys too school.
Tues. Nov. 8
Election Day. Rained almost all day & sometimes pretty hard. Cleared off
& was nice a while in P.M. Arthur drove the car today so I didn't get to
vote. Mon went with Dave in the wagon but it was raining so I didn't go. Johnnie
came over in eve & the boys went coon hunting but they didn't see or get
any coons. The whole country went Democrat. Hoover got out & Roosevelt in
as Pres. Great time over election.

Not very nice day. Cloudy & cold. Mr. Brown took the boys too school. They
only had school in A.M. at our school so Dean came home at noon & we went
to Decorah in P.M. Went up to see Dad P. a few minutes. Mon got new underclothes
& rubbers & Dean got shoes, rubbers, underclothes & jacket. We got
back to B.O. about 5:30. Johnnie & Arthur rode home with us from there.
Mon & I were over to Howard's awhile in P.M.

Not very nice day. Regular blizzard at times. Ed. D. was here for dinner. Mon
plowed a little in A.M. We got a load of corn in P.M. Arthur drove the car today
& it froze up coming home but they got it thawed out all O.K.

Regular blizzard again. Arthur walked to school but he got a ride home with
Mr. B. Pearl was over a minute in A.M. Dean & I went over to Dave's a few
minutes in eve. Johnnie was here & spent the eve.

Beautiful day. Rather cold early in A.M. but warmed up & thawed quite a
little. We sold another load of shoats too Lloyd K. this A.M. Stub hauled them.
16 weighed 3870 lbs., ave., almost 242 lbs. @ $3.00 per cwt. $114.10. $1.80
out for hauling. Mon went with Stub & the boys & I went as soon as they
got the rest of the chores done. We went to Mabel & got our money. Stopped
at Prosper & did some trading on our way back. Stayed at mama's for dinner.
Got home about 3:30. Arthurs cow had a calf this A.M.

Beautiful day. Thawed like everything. Johnnie came over in A.M. & he &
the boys went hunting. We were home alone all day & eve.
Mon. Nov. 14
Cloudy, cold windy day. Got pretty cold late in P.M. & eve. We picked a
load of corn in A.M. The men put up the snow fence on this place in P.M. Arthur
drove the car too school today. Mon & Arthur banked the house some in P.M.
Mary had a calf tonite but it died. It froze hard tonite. Froze quite hard in
our kitchen.

Not very warm day. Quite bright tho'. We went to Bluffton in A.M. & Mon
got a new lined jacket & then we went up home for dinner. Mr. Brown took
the boys too school & we bro't them home. Mon got alcohol in the car today.

Quite a bit warmer. Arthur drove too school. Mon helped Floyd A. shred corn.
I washed. Had a big wash too.

Quite a nice day but cooler. Arthur drove too school. I ironed in A.M. Didn't

Beautiful day, until late in P.M. it clouded up & got quite a bit colder.
Mon took Vera, Gladys & I to Club in P.M. at Gerthrude Emmon's . Quite a
crowd out. Hazel, Donald, Alice Donlan & Inez Nolte joined. Gladys &
Vera rode home with Seelye's. We went up town in eve & the boys & I
went to the Lutheran play at the Hall. "Safety First." It was just
fine. Everyone took their parts so well.

Pretty cold in A.M. early but warmed up & was a nice day. We went down to
Claude's about 10 & helped butcher. We bro't ¼ of the hog home with
us. Uncle Geo. was there too. Got home about 2:30 & then went to Bluffton
too do some trading. Johnnie was over in eve.

Not so cold in A.M. but got pretty cold & windy in P.M. We went down to
Aunt Lissas & spent the day, celebrating hers & Aunt Candace's birthdays.
Papa & mama, Claude's, Dell's, Aunt Till & Lawrence, Aunt Candace, Archie's,
John E's, Colonel B's, & Lizzie C. were there. Had a dandy dinner &
a good time. We took papa & mama home. Their car wouldn't start.

Not such a nice day. Rather cold. Arthur drove too school. We ground lard most
of the P.M.

Not very nice day. Mr. Brown drove today. I tried out lard & made sausage
today. Papa came about 11 & was here the rest of the day. He & Mon husked
corn in P.M. They finished getting out our standing corn today & started
husking shocks. The Dr. was here in A.M. & tested our cattle for T.B.

Thanksgiving Day. Nice day. We went up home & spent the day. Lester's, Claude's,
Dells, Aunt Lissa & Neva, Aunt Till & Lawrence were there too. Had a
swell dinner & a nice time. Went up town to the dance in eve. Masquerade.
Johnnie went with us. Quite a crowd out. We came home at supper time.
Fri. Nov. 25
Nice warm day, but terribly windy & dusty. Papa was here again today. I
washed but the dust was so bad I had too take the clothes over to Pearls too
hang them on the line. No school in either school today.
Sat. Nov. 26
Dandy nice day but cold. Papa was here again today. It was so cold they didn't
go out to the corn field. They started building a rack around the straw stack.
Gust, Ray & Walt were here in A.M. & bought 4 cows. The old bell cow
& the old one we got from Lester Bronner, the Herbie cow & Bell. $45.
Dean & Mon helped drive them over to Walt in P.M. Arthur went over after
them about 4:30. We went to Bluffton in eve too do some trading.

Beautiful day but cool. We started up home in A.M. & stopped at Gust's a
minute. They wanted us to stay for dinner so we did. Had roast duck for dinner
& lots of other good things. Ray, Walt & Ruby were there too. Went to
B.O. a minute in P.M. & then home & did our chores, then Mon, Dean &
I went up & got Gust & Kate & went down to Albert Hruska's but no
one at home so we went over to Dell's & spent the eve. Arthur stayed home
alone.

Beautiful day. Arthur drove to school. Papa was here again today. He & Mon
were over to Howards in A.M. & bought some wood. They finished the rack
in A.M. & husked corn in P.M. Arthur went over to Johnnie's in eve.

Beautiful day. Papa & Mon were down in the woods on Howards chopping all
day. Arthur drove to school. John was over in eve.

Beautiful day. Mon & papa chopped wood today. I went up home with the boys

Not very nice day. The boys & I went up to Gusts about 9 & got them
& then up & got mama & we all went to Decorah. Started raining just
after we got down there & rained quite hard for a while, then rained off
& on all the time we were down there. Got home about 2. It rained quite
hard just after we got home. We went to B.O. in eve too the M.E. Play. "George
In a Jam." It was just fine. They had a good crowd. It got colder in the
night & froze up solid.

Regular blizzard for awhile in A.M. but cleared off & was a dandy nice day.
Went up home for dinner. Claude's were there too. Mon, Arthur & I went down
to Albert's in P.M. too see Uncle Marion. He is not very well. Miriam &
Paul came just before we left. Stopped at Floyds on our way home & got Dean.
He rode down to the corner with Claudes & walked down to Floyds too wait
until we came.

Pretty cold day. Arthur drove today. Papa came down about 10 A.M. & Mon
& I went up home with him. Mon wanted too see Mr. Mahana of the Bank. We
stayed up & came home with Arthur in P.M. The Dance Club had Election of
Officers in eve & free dance but we didn't go.
Wed. Dec. 14
Quite nice in A.M. but wind started up in P.M. & switched around to the
N.W. & it got mighty cold. Arthur drove today. Papa came down today. Mon
hauled two loads of wood in A.M. & then broke a sled runner.
Thurs. Dec. 15
Mighty cold day. Arthur drove. M.E.L.A.S. Sale & Dinner today but I had
no way too go. Mon went up to Gust's in P.M.
Fri. Dec. 16
30º below this A.M. Cold all day. Arthur drove. Ole & Gladys came
down in P.M. & I went to Club at Hilda E's. with them. Not many out. Election
of officers. Katherine H. Pres., Ella R. V. Pres. Mon got a load of corn from
Gust in A.M.
Sat. Dec. 17
Not quite as cold today. Snowed some off & on all P.M. Papa came down a
minute in A.M. & Dean went home with him. Mon & Arthur went over to
Merle's & got the trailer & he took an old sow to Prosper. She weighed
400 lbs. & we got 1½¢ or $7.00. Floyd A. rode up to Prosper
with us. We stayed at mama's until about 4:30. We took Uncle Marion home from
B.O. on our way home. Dean got his hair cut today.
Sun. Dec. 18
Nice day. We were alone all day. Walter Jewell was here a few minutes in eve
& after he went home we went over to Mike Blaess's. Had a nice time. Got
home about 1.
Mon. Dec. 19
Dandy nice day. Mr. B. drove today. Papa came down & he chopped & Mon
hauled wood home. I washed. We went up town in eve. Arthur joined the Athletic
Club up there. John went along with us & he joined too. I stayed at mama's.
We got home about 11.
Tues. Dec. 20
Dandy day. Mr. B. drove. Papa came down & chopped wood again. Mon helped
Jack W. saw wood. Mon, Dean & I went to Bluffton in eve.
Wed. Dec. 21
Nice day. Mr. B. drove. Mon went up early in A.M. & got Ernest Sheley. He
butchered a hog & a beef in A.M. Mon took him home after dinner. Papa was
here again today.
Thurs. Dec. 22
Nice day. Mr. B. drove. Mon & I went up home about 10. Ernest cut up a ¼
of beef & ¼ of pork for us at mama's. He also cut up some for mama.
We came home about 2. School out at B.O. today.
Fri. Dec. 23
Nice day. Dean, Arthur & I went to Decorah in A.M. Papa bro't mama down
in A.M. & we got meat ready too can. Dean's school out today. Mon &
Arthur went up to Gust's in P.M. Mon took mama home about 4:30.
Sat. Dec. 24
Rained almost all day. Pretty hard some times too. Canned meat all day. Got
41 qts. We went up town in eve. I went up home.
Sun. Dec. 25
Xmas Day. Not such a nice day. Colder. Ice all over everything. Pretty slippery.
We went up home & spent the day. Had a good time & a splendid radio
program from W.N.A.X. Howard was over in eve.
Mon. Dec. 26
Beautiful day. Thawed a lot. Papa came down & he & Mon husked corn.
Dean went up to Lesters in P.M. We went to B.O. in eve. Johnnie came over &
went with us. Athletic Club. I went up home. Mettie & Aunt Lissa were there
& spent the eve. We got home about 11.
Tues. Dec. 27
Dandy nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & got colder. Papa came down in
A.M. & he & Arthur husked corn until noon. Mon, Dean & I went to
Decorah in A.M. & back to Isa's for dinner. Her Birthday. Papa & Arthur
came over at noon & mama was there too.
Wed. Dec. 28
Nice day. Papa & Mon chopped wood. I tried out lard & did a little of
everything.
Thurs. Dec. 29
Nice day. Papa & Mon chopped in A.M. Mon helped Gust saw wood in P.M. &
Arthur helped papa. We went over to Happy's in eve. Had a good time. Played
500.
Fri. Dec. 30
Not such a nice day. Papa & Arthur chopped. Little son born to Violet &
Louie U. in A.M. Mon helped Gust in A.M. & helped papa in P.M. Donald G.
was here for dinner. I washed some in P.M.
Sat. Dec. 31
Nice day but pretty cold. Papa didn't come down until P.M. to chop. Mon &
I went up home in eve. Fine program on from Nashville Tenn. We got home about
12:30. Cha's Wernett was over & spent the eve with the boys.
