Mon. Jan. 1
Nice day but cold. We went to Claude's to spend the day & the folks
couldn't get their car started so Mon & Arthur went back to B.O. after
them. They got the folks car started so Mon brot part of the folks & papa
part (Lester's & papa & mama). Dell, Mettie & Aunt Lissa were
there too. Had a dandy good dinner & a nice time. Got home about 4:30. Went
over to Fred Walters in eve. Harry & Vera were there too.
Tues. Jan. 2
Not such a nice day but not too bad. Both schools started again today. Mon went
to the woods. I didn't feel very good.
Wed. Jan. 3
Quite a nice day. Mon & papa were in the woods. I didn't feel so good
in A.M. but felt better in eve. Mon sold the stock hog to Terry McConnel &
he came & got him this A.M. ($10). Will Lange was here awhile in P.M.
Thurs. Jan. 4
Rainy, nasty day. Not so cold though. Turned into snow about 5 & snowed
enough to cover the ground good. Papa came down early in A.M. & bro't
us some beef (They butchered their calf). He & Mon intended to go to the
woods but it got to raining too much so Arthur & the kids went to B.O. with
papa & Mon & I went up about 10:30. Helped mama a little with her meat
canning. Got 34 qts. canned today. We bro't the kids home. Pretty slippery
this morning but not bad when we came home.
Fri. Jan. 5
Quite a warm day. Sun shone some & it rained some in P.M. too. We sold 32
hogs & the bull to Wickett this A.M. The hogs weighed 6660 lbs. @ $3 cwt
& bro't $199.80 & the bull weighed 1480 lbs. @ $2.10 cwt &
bro't $31.08. Mon went with the trucks & came back with the kids in
P.M. I washed.
Sat. Jan. 6
Quite a nice day. Thawed quite a little. We went up home about 11. Had dinner
up there & then went to Decorah & spent some money. Gave Dad his share.
Saw him down town. Mon got new shoes & jackets & I got new slippers
& overshoes. We got home about 4:30. They put our telephone back on the
line this P.M. Went up town in eve. I went up to mama's.
Sun. Jan. 7
Not very nice day. Got quite cold during the day. Mon, Arthur & I went up
home. I went to church & then up home for dinner. Claude's were there
too. Dean stopped at Floyds & stayed there all day.
Mon. Jan. 8
Not very nice day. Mon went with the kids this A.M. when they went to school,
as far as Floyd's & helped him saw all day. I did a little of everything.
Tues. Jan. 9
Quite a nice day. Mon helped Ray Hennings saw wood (in the woods) today &
he & papa also finished cutting our wood. Mon, Dean & I went down to
Mart L's. in eve. Gilbert, Mrs. T, & Glen were there too.
Wed. Jan. 10
Not very nice day. Mon started hauling our wood home today (2 loads). Mrs. Harrison
Sheley died very suddenly early this A.M.
Thurs. Jan. 11
Cold raw day. Mon hauled wood (2 loads). I rode up to the corner with him at
noon & then I walked on up to Gladys' to Club. Quite a few out. Had
a dandy lunch. Arthur came home that way so I had a ride home. Vera, Geo., Philip,
Arthur, Genevra, Joyce, Alberta N. & Mrs. K. were here in eve & practiced
for the funeral. Arthur & Dean went over to Howards.
Fri. Jan. 12
Not very nice day. Started to snow in P.M. about 3 & kept it up the rest
of the P.M. & eve. Mon helped Ted Emmons saw wood (down on Howards). I went
up to Vera's about noon & went to the funeral with them. Kate went
too. The funeral was at Rube's. Very large crowd out. The house was full.
We went up to Ole's in eve & played cards. Geo's & Gusts
were there too. Had a nice lunch. Got home about 12:30.
Sat. Jan. 13
Not very nice day. Quite a blizzard sometimes. Mon helped Ted finish his sawing
today. He got home about 3. Donald came down in A.M. & Dean went home with
him & spent the day. We went up town in eve. Went up home. Lesters were
there too. Dr. Svebakken was killed in Florida this A.M.
Sun. Jan. 14
Quite nice in A.M. but clouded up & got cooler in P.M. Dave was over in
A.M. We went up home about noon. Walt & Wilma & the kids were there
in P.M. Ed D. was here for supper.
Mon. Jan. 15
Dandy day. Sun shone all day. It thawed quite a little. Mon hauled wood all
day. (3 loads). Went up to Vera's to a Farm Bureau meeting. Lizzie &
I went with Bernice & Roy & then we rode home with the kids when they
came from school. Had a good meeting & a dandy dinner.
Tues. Jan. 16
Nice day. Somewhat cooler tho' & the wind blew rather hard. Mon hauled
3 loads of wood. I washed.
Wed. Jan. 17
Not such a nice day but the sun shone some. Rather cool. Mon hauled 3 loads
of wood. I ironed & scrubbed. We went up town in eve awhile. I went up home.
Thurs. Jan. 18
Nice day. Mon hauled 3 loads of wood. I patched & did a little of everything.
Fri. Jan. 19
Dandy day. Mon helped Howard saw wood & when he got thro' with that
he hauled 1 load of wood. We went to B.O. in eve. B.O. Dance Club have started
their dances in the Hall again. They put me in a Sec. Alfred Young & Gene
Rice Managers. The boys & I went up home a little while before the dance.
Stopped at Agnes W's awhile when I came back down town. Just big enough
crowd at the dance to have a good time. Oscar Anderson, his wife & Henry
Foltz played. We got home about 1.
Sat. Jan. 20
Beautiful day. Thawed quite a lot. Mon & the boys hauled 3 loads of wood.
We went up town in eve. I went up home.
Sun. Jan. 21
Not very nice day. Rainy & nasty. We went up home & spent the day. Papa
is not a bit well. Pretty slippery tonite.
Mon. Jan. 22
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. & was quite nice. Mon &
Arthur helped a truck out of the ditch in A.M. early before Arthur went to school.
(They had been in the ditch since about 2 A.M.) After Mon got the chores done
he went up home & took papa to Decorah to the Dr. but all the Dr's
were at Dr. Svebakken's funeral so they didn't get to see any. Mon
came home with the kids. Ed D. was here in P.M. & Howard awhile in eve.
Froze hard tonite.
Tues. Jan. 23
Dandy day. Thawed quite a little. Bill drove today. Mon took Lizzie & I
over to Audreys about 10 A.M. to a Farm Bureau Meeting on the "Making
of Bread." Not so many out but we had a nice dinner & a good meeting.
Happy's pump was broke so he & Mon went to Mabel to get it fixed &
they didn't get back until after 3. We got home about 5. Ed D. was here
in eve & stayed all nite.
Wed. Jan. 24
Mon's 39th Birthday. Quite warm in A.M. Thawed a lot, but got colder in
P.M. & froze up. Pretty cold & windy & blustery in eve. We sawed
wood here today. Ed & Tom D. with the rig & Howard, Floyd, Harold L.,
Ted E. & Ray H. helped saw. Had 4 hrs & 20 min's sawing. Harold,
Audry & Mr. L. were over & spent the eve.
Thurs. Jan. 25
Pretty cold early in A.M. but warmed up & was a nice day. I washed. Mon
didn't do much of anything.
Fri. Jan. 26
Nice day. Did a little of everything. We went to B.O. in eve to the Dance. Went
up home awhile first. Quite a crowd out to the dance. Harry Brandt, Billie Moore,
Andrew Hovey & a lady at the piano. We got home about 2.
Sat. Jan. 27
Nice day. We went up home in A.M. In P.M. papa, Arthur, Mon & I went to
Decorah. Papa went to see Dr. Barfoot. Arthur took me down to the Hospital too
see Wilbur Donlan. He got burned terribly when kerosene exploded as he was building
the fire. We stopped at Dad P's. on our way home to see Catherine. She
& Stanley came to take Dad home with them for awhile. (Saw Dad & Stanley
down town). Got back to mama's about 4. Olive & her kiddies were there.
Marion & Marvin are having the mumps.
Sun. Jan. 28
Mighty cold windy day. Wind blew terribly hard. Didn't do much of anything
except set by the stove. 10º below about 7 P.M.
Mon. Jan. 29
Mighty cold windy day again. 20º below this A.M. Dean went to school
but Arthur didn't. Mon & Arthur fixed the pump & engine to get
water, hauled wood across the road & did a number of jobs. Howard was over
a couple of times & Pearl was over awhile about supper time.
Tues. Jan. 30
Somewhat warmer, but still pretty chilly. The wind got around in the south today.
The kids all went to school. Bill didn't come home after school. The H.S.
had a party at the Lutheran Church in eve. Maxine came over & went with
us. I went up home. Something is wrong with our car so we left it up at the
garage & drove papa's car home. Bill rode home with us but Maxine
stayed up. Got home about 10.
Wed. Jan. 31
Warmer most of the day. Cooled off late in P.M. Wind blew terribly hard in P.M.
& eve. Mon took a load of wood up to the folks in A.M. & helped Harry
saw wood awhile in P.M. Harry was here a minute at noon.
Thurs. Feb. 1
Quite a nice day. Mon hauled a load of wood up home again today. He didn't get
home until after the kids did. I washed & ironed.
Fri. Feb. 2
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off about 3 P.M. & was nice. Not so cold.
Mon went with the kids this A.M. & worked at the car until noon. The kids
came home then too. County 8th Grade Exams at B.O. yesterday & today. Mon
& I went to B.O. in eve to the Dance. Large crowd out. Had a good time.
Leonard & Grace Gossman, Leo Wilson & Gene Russel played. Music was
sure good. Got home about 1.
Sat. Feb. 3
Dandy nice day until late in P.M. it clouded up & looked pretty stormy &
the wind blew terribly hard. Lots of dust. We went up town & spent the day.
Roy got our car fixed so we drove it home. Loyal came home & stayed all
nite with us. Mama & I went down town in P.M. & got our hair cut. Quite
a crowd in town. They were signing up the Corn Hog Program. Mon didn't
sign today. Didn't have his papers ready.
Sun. Feb. 4
Nice warm day. Mon went over & helped Dave awhile in A.M. & then we
went up to Lester's for dinner. Harlan's 10th Birthday. Papa &
mama, Claudes, Dells & Aunt Lissa, Carl's & (?Selmer's?)
were there too. Picnic dinner & we sure had a good dinner & a good time.
We came home about 4:30.
Mon. Feb. 5
Quite a nice warm day. Mon & I went with the kids in the A.M. to B.O. &
then took papa to Decorah. Isa went along too. She & I went down to the
Hospital too see Wilbur. He is getting along as well as he can. Got back up
to mama's about noon & stayed there until the kids came home.
Tues. Feb. 6
Dandy nice day. Dean's teacher was sick so he didn't have school.
Lizzie, Dean & I walked down across to Jane G's. to a Farm Bureau
Meeting. "The Care & Cooking of Meat." Had a dandy dinner. Quite
a few there. We got home about 4. In eve Lizzie & Maxine came over here
& went to Lovlien's to a surprise party on Olaf & Kate. Their
10th Wedding anniversary. Quite a few there. Had a good time & a fine lunch.
Got home about 1. Mon helped Ed D. saw at (?) in P.M.
Wed. Feb. 7
Snowed quite hard for a little while early in A.M. & then cleared off &
was a dandy day. I washed. Dean's teacher was better so he went too school.
Thurs. Feb. 8
My 42nd Birthday. Nice day but cool. Went up home with the kids in A.M. Had
dinner there. Arthur was up there too for dinner. Went to Club at Luella's
in P.M. with Mae. Rode back with Katherine H. Came home with the kids. Dean
was home sick when we got home. Had a surprise party on me in eve & we were
all sure surprised. Geo's, Ole's, Olaf's & Harold. Had
a good time & a nice lunch. Got to bed about 1:30.
Fri. Feb. 9
Pretty cold raw day. Dean felt a little better in A.M. but didn't go to
school. He slept most of A.M. & felt quite a lot better in P.M. & eve.
(Helped with the chores some ). They sawed wood here in P.M. Clifford &
Harry got up wood & piled it here across the road from the house. Mon &
I went up to the Dance in eve. Not very good time. Quite a few out. Oscar Anderson's
played.
Sat. Feb. 10
Nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & looked pretty stormy. Dean feels pretty
good again. Snowed a little in eve. We went up home & spent the day.
Sun. Feb. 11
Beautiful day. Nice & warm. Arthur went up & got papa & mama in
A.M. & they came down & spent the day. Arthur & I took them home
about 5. Marion was here a few minutes in P.M.
Mon. Feb. 12
Terribly windy day. Dust was so bad you couldn't see anything. Not cold
though. Didn't do much of anything. Mon, Dean & I went up to Gust's
a few minutes in eve.
Tues. Feb. 13
Quite a nice day. Rather cloudy but not cold. I washed & ironed. Mon went
to Mabel with Ed D. in A.M. & then came home with the kids in P.M.
Wed. Feb. 14
Beautiful day. Papa, mama & Ernest Sheley came down in A.M. & the men
butchered two hogs. One for us & one for the folks. Mama & I went over
to Dave's at noon & listened to a wedding over K.G.C.A. at Decorah.
Billie Moore & (?Bunola?) Eggen. The folks went home about 3.
Thurs. Feb. 15
Dandy nice day. We worked with the meat all P.M. Snowed quite a little in the
nite.
Fri. Feb. 16
Dandy day. Quite a bit of snow on the ground. We worked with the meat all day.
Went to B.O. in eve to the dance. Gossman's played. Good music & a
good time. Got home about 2:30. Glen A. rode up with us.
Sat. Feb. 17
Dandy day. Thawed quite a little. I canned 14 qts. of meat in A.M. & we
went to B.O. in P.M. Dave was here in A.M. also a fellow getting subscribers
for papers. We took 3 papers & got a waterless cooker. Traded chicken's
& oats.
Sun. Feb. 18
Pretty cold day. Regular blizzard early in A.M. but the snow quit blowing, but
the wind kept up & it was cold. We went over to Floyd A's. to a farewell
party. A neighborhood affair. Not so many there but we had a good time &
a good dinner.
Mon. Feb. 19
Olive's Birthday. 40. Dandy nice day. We did a little of everything.
Tues. Feb. 20
Pretty windy & cold in A.M. but warmed up in P.M. & was quite nice.
Mon & I went up home with the kids in A.M. We went to Decorah with papa.
Isa went along too. She & I went down to the Hospital too see Wilbur. He
is getting along just fine, but will be there for some time yet. We got back
to mama's at noon. Mon & I came home with the kids in P.M.
Wed. Feb. 21
Not such a nice day, but not so bad either. I washed. Mon went over to Howards
in A.M. Maxine was sick so she couldn't go too school today. Dorothy Rollins
& Roy Snell were married today.
Thurs. Feb. 22
Pretty cold day. No school at B.O. today. (Washington's Birthday.) Mon
took me up to Ole's at noon & then Frank G. took Vera, Gladys, Alice
A. & I to Club at Florence E's. Good crowd out & a swell lunch.
Shirley has the chicken pox so she had to be up stairs. Mon stayed at Ole's
& made out his corn hog contract. Ole came after us girls & then I came
home with Henry.
Fri. Feb. 23
Mighty cold day. The kids are back at school again today. Didn't do much
of anything but hug the stove. We did up the chores early & went up home
for supper. Got up there about 6. B.O.H.S. wrestled at Ossian tonite. Arthur,
Billie, LaVern Mc., LaVern B., Darwin K., Merlyn C. & Harlan Thorson went
down to wrestle. Billie La Vern B. & Harlan didn't wrestle though.
B.O. won 22-13. We went to the dance at the Hall. Not many there but had a good
time. The kids got back to B.O. about 10. We came home about 12. Dean stayed
up home all nite.
Sat. Feb. 24
Cold day again. Dave was here in A.M. awhile. Mon & Arthur took a veal calf
to Prosper about noon. Got $5.20. Lizzie rode over to Floyd's with us
& I went up to mama's & stayed. Mon & Arthur went on to Canton
& Harmony. Jack W. & Gust rode back with them. We got home about 5 &
then Mon went over to Floyd's & got Lizzie. He went over to Howards
awhile in eve.
Sun. Feb. 25
Mighty cold day. We were alone all day. Mon took Jack over to his brothers in
P.M. but wasn't gone long.
Mon. Feb. 26
Mighty cold day. They had a hard time starting the car this A.M. but they got
it going about 9. Didn't do much of anything.
Tues. Feb. 27
Cold, windy, dirty day. South wind & it was a bad one. Couldn't keep
the house warm. Mon went up to Gust's in A.M. helped him get some of his
stuff down to the other place (The old Kimber place) & stayed there the
rest of the day. They moved yesterday. Andrew Haugen moved on the Robinson place.
Wed. Feb. 28
Not such a bad day but still cold & windy. We went up town in eve. I went
up home awhile.
Thurs. Mar. 1
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off & was nice in P.M. Mon went over to
Floyds with the kids when they went to school & helped them get loaded up
too move & then he went out to the other place with Harold R. who hauled
the furniture in his truck. Harold hauled stock for Blaess's down to Clay
Hill where they are moving, in P.M. He broke his truck on the way so couldn't
go back out where Floyd's moved and Mon drove Floyd's car home.
He got home about 9. Gladys & the 4 little ones stayed at Lizzies all nite.
Howard was over in P.M.
Fri. Mar. 2
Not nice in A.M. but cleared off & was fine in P.M. Mon went out to Floyd's
about 7:30. Gladys & the kids went with him. He went from there with Harold
R. down to Mike's with cattle & then on to B.O. & came home with
the kids from school. We went up to Gust's in eve.
Sat. Mar. 3
Not very nice day. Started to rain about 1 & kept it up the rest of the
day & nite. Not hard but just a rain. I washed in A.M. Mon went over to
Gilbert's. We went to Decorah in P.M. Dean got new shoes & rubbers
& Arthur rubbers.
Sun. Mar. 4
Beautiful day, but clouded up late in P.M. & rained some. Harry Q. was here
most of A.M. We went up home for dinner.
Mon. Mar. 5
Cold, windy day. Mon went over to Floyd Arnold's with Floyd B. & didn't
get back until about 3:30. We went up town in eve. Dean & I went up home.
Got home about 10.
Tues. Mar. 6
Pretty windy & cold in A.M. but cleared off & was a pretty nice day.
Had our last Farm Bureau meeting of the year here today. Quite a few here. Had
a dandy dinner & lunch. Clifford Quandahl had a sale this P.M. so the men
went up there & then came back here for lunch.
Wed. Mar. 7
Cold windy day. Didn't do much of anything. Mon was over to Howard's
in A.M. & we were both over there awhile in P.M. Some one ran over &
killed our little dog "Dan" this noon.
Thurs. Mar. 8
Very nice early in A.M. but cold. Wind started up later in A.M. & it sure
blew fierce the rest of the day. The dust was terrible too. I went up home with
the kids in A.M. & washed. Went to Club at Alice Donlan's in P.M.
Quite a crowd out and a dandy lunch. Rode home from B.O. with the kids. Mon
came to B.O. in P.M. so he rode home with us too. John Fox & Lola Quandahl
were here in eve.
Fri. Mar. 9
Cold windy day. Mon helped Gust saw wood he got home about 4. Dad P. was here
in P.M. & then he came back & stayed for supper. We went to B.O. in
eve to the Dance. Not so many out & rather a dead crowd. Anderson's
played. Billie went with us. Got home about 1:30.
Sat. Mar. 10
Nice day but cool. Didn't do much of anything. Dean went up to Whalen's
in P.M. We went up town in eve. I went up home.
Sun. Mar. 11
Beautiful day. We were alone all day & eve.
Mon. Mar. 12
Beautiful day. Pretty warm. School Election today so Dean was home for dinner.
He went down to McCauley's in P.M. Mon & I went to school election
in P.M. Mr. Krumm went out & Henry Lovlien went in as director. We stopped
at Art & Hazel Olsons on our way home. They have moved back on Christs place.
Tues. Mar. 13
Just beautiful in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & the wind blew hard &
got quite cold. Snowed some too. Harold L. came over after Mon about 10 A.M.
to come & help him pile up his wood & I went along & spent the day
with Audry. Had a dandy good time. Harold bro't us home about 5. His 31st
Birthday. Arthur was home sick when we got home.
Wed. Mar. 14
Nice day. Mon helped Harold L. saw in A.M. Arthur don't feel very well.
He couldn't go to school. Papa & mama came down awhile in P.M. Mon
& Dean went to B.O. in eve.
Thurs. Mar. 15
Dandy day but windy. I went up home with the kids in A.M. to wash. Mon came
up about noon. Arthur feels some better. So he could go to school anyway. Dean's
teacher was taken sick so Gladys A. taught for her.
Fri. Mar. 16
Terribly windy dusty day. Not cold though. Mon went out in the woods in P.M.
Audry & Harold were here a minute in P.M. We went to B.O. in eve. The Hesper
young people gave a play at the Hall in B.O. "All a Mistake." It
was fine. Audry & Dale A. went to B.O. with us. Quite a bit of thunder &
lightning when we came. Lightning struck the big barn on the Hospital farm &
burned that the granary & corn crib. Burned a lot of cattle & hogs too.
Rained a little in the nite.
Sat. Mar. 17
Regular blizzard early in A.M. but cleared up & was nice most of the day
except a bad wind & pretty cool. Mon & the boys went down to the Hospital
farm too see the remains of the fire in A.M. & then when they came back
Mon, Arthur & I went up home for dinner. After dinner Arthur took mama &
I down to Aunt Lissa's too see Aunt Eunice, Earl, Sonny & Vincell.
They came up last nite & went back about 3 this P.M. Aunt Till & Uncle
Aaron were at Aunt Lissa's too. We came back to mama's about 3:30
& got home about 5:30.
Sun. Mar. 18
Dandy day. Mon & the boys took me to A.C. Church in A.M. (Gordon Reed talked).
It was fine. Went on up home for dinner. Claudes were there too. Had a good
visit.
Mon. Mar. 19
Dandy day. Did a little of everything. Ray Hennings was here in P.M. & bought
a sow for $10.
Tues. Mar. 20
Beautiful spring day. Quite warm. Mon & I went to B.O. with the kids in
A.M. I washed at mama's in A.M. & in P.M. Mon, mama, Isa & I went
to Decorah. Went down to the Hospital too see Wilbur. He is gaining slowly,
but will be there for some time yet. We got a sack of Iona flour for $1.59 &
a bu. of potatoes for $1.45. Got back to B.O. in time to come home with the
kids. Luke O'Brien was here in eve.
Wed. Mar. 21
Spring begins & a much colder day. I ironed in A.M. & Mon went up to
Gust's & got the manure spreader. Luke O'B. was here in P.M.
& got a load of hay.
Thurs. Mar. 22
Pretty cold day. I went to B.O. with the kids in A.M. Went up to mama's
a few minutes & then down & got my hair cut & then over to Mae's
& went to Club at Catherine H's. with her. Cecelia Norlie & her
boys & Irene F. went too. We went about 12. Had a picnic dinner & the
men were invited but most of them couldn't be there. Had a swell dinner
& a good time. Got back to B.O. & rode home with the kids. Luke O'B.
got another load of hay today. The brown heifer had a calf today. Snowed in
the nite.
Fri. Mar. 23
Not quite so cold today. The ground was covered with snow this morning but it
didn't last long. Snowed off & on all day but melted as fast as it
fell. We went to B.O. in eve to the dance. Not such a large crowd out. We came
home about 12:30. Pretty cold when we came home.
Sat. Mar. 24
Mighty cold in A.M. but warmed up in P.M. & was quite nice. Mon took Gust
to Decorah & Cresco today. He left here about 9:30 & they got back here
about 5. Dean & I rode up to Gusts when Mon took him home. Went in to see
Kate a minute. The boys & I didn't do much of anything all day.
Sun. Mar. 25
Dandy day. Quite a south wind. Mama & papa were down & spent the day.
Mon. Mar. 26
Very nice in A.M. early but about 10:30 the wind started to blow hard &
it got much colder. Papa came down in A.M. & he & Mon loaded up a load
of hay & Mon took it up town for them. Luke O'B. got a load in A.M.
& another in P.M. & that finished his hay.
Tues. Mar. 27
Dandy day. Mon & I went to B.O. with the kids in A.M. I washed at mama's.
Isa was there for dinner too. She, mama & I went down town awhile in P.M.
The jersey heifer had a calf today but lost it.
Wed. Mar. 28
Cold windy day. Mon went over to Harry Q's. in P.M. We went to B.O. in
eve. Whist Tournament between B.O. & Decorah. B.O. won. Also a dance in
B.O. Some of the people from Canoe had a dance in the Hall. I stayed up home.
We got home about 11:30. Little son born to Percy & Bessie Ward today.
Thurs. Mar. 29
Rained & sleeted & wasn't a very nice day. Didn't do much
of anything. Turned into snow in eve & snowed all nite I guess.

Arthur's 17th Birthday. Regular blizzard this A.M. but it let up some
during the day. Rained & snowed off & on all day. The kids went to school
even if it was bad. They got home about 3:30.
Sat. Mar. 31
Beautiful day. Thawed a lot. We drove the team & sleigh up home in A.M.
& spent the day. First sleigh ride of the year. Marie, Marion, Marvin &
Leonard were at mama's awhile in P.M. too. Leonard's 16th birthday.
Sun. Apr. 1
Easter Sunday. Rained most of the A.M. Quit in P.M. & the sun shone a little.
We were invited down to Claude's today but didn't get there. Lizzie
called up after dinner & we went over there & spent the P.M. & had
supper. Audry, Harold & Delores were there too. We rode home with them.
Mon. Apr. 2
Not very nice in A.M. early but cleared off & was very nice until late in
P.M. it clouded up. Rained hard in eve & nite. Quite a lot of thunder &
lightning. Took most of the snow. Mon hauled cream for Walt. Around the square
west of us. He left home at 8 & got back at 5. Pretty heavy roads.
Tues. Apr. 3
Cold, nasty, misty day. Mon & the boys took the cream to B.O. today. Howard
was over in eve.
Wed. Apr. 4
Rain & mist all day. Rained pretty hard sometimes too. Mon was over to Howard's
awhile in P.M. & Floyd B. was here awhile in P.M.
Thurs. Apr. 5
Not very nice day. Misty & rainy. Mon went on the cream route again today.
He met Walt at Whalen's & got rid of his cream so he didn't
have to go to B.O.
Fri. Apr. 6
Beautiful day. Mon worked his poll tax today helping Rupert down by McCauleys.
Arthur hauled manure. Bobbie Lovlien was here in A.M. & Johnnie & Maurice
W. in P.M. I washed & ironed. We went to B.O. in eve to the Dance. Drove
the car up but it wasn't working very good so Mon left it for Roy to fix
& we drove papa's car home. Not so many out to the dance & a rather
dead crowd until after supper they got woke up & had some fun. Billie rode
up town with us. First car on the road past here today since Sun.

Beautiful spring day. Mon helped Rupert in A.M. & we went to B.O. in P.M.
I went up home. Isa was there a while also Grace Nash.
Sun. Apr. 8
Beautiful day. Arthur walked down to Lange's early in A.M. & then
when he came back we went up home for dinner. Isa, Lester & the boys were
there awhile in P.M. Clarence Anderson's house got afire in P.M. &
most of the men in B.O. went but the fire was out when they got there. Pearl
& Verna were over in A.M. awhile & then Howard, Pearl & Verna were
over in eve, also Olaf & Kate.
Mon. Apr. 9
Dandy nice warm day. Mon went over to Gust's in A.M. & I went along
too. Stayed there for dinner. (Kate's Birthday). Got home about 2:30.
Tues. Apr. 10
Nice part of the day. Sprinkled a few times. Mon hauled manure part of the day.
Fred Lange got a couple of jags of hay here today. Snowed & rained in the
nite. Mr. Ferris died tonite.
Wed. Apr. 11
Not very nice day. Cold & windy & snowed some in A.M. Mon & I went
to B.O. in A.M. with the kids & then mama, Isa, Mon & I went to Decorah.
Mama went down to see Dr. Barfoot & Isa & I went down to the Hospital
too see Wilbur. He looks much better, but his limbs surely don't look
very good. We stopped at Dad Price's a minute on our way home. Lester
was down to Decorah & he rode home with us. Roy got our car fixed so we
drove it today & bro't it home with us. We got back to mama's
about 1 & had dinner. Carl Richardson's came there in P.M. Carl &
Lester came down here after we got home & Lester bought a heifer for $17.
Frank Reed & Ethel Brown were married today & they had a big shower
for them at the Hall in eve. We didn't go.
Thurs. Apr. 12
Rather cold day but bright & windy. Lester came down in A.M. & got his
heifer. Mon went a ways with him too help drive her but she went just fine.
Fri. Apr. 13
Cold, windy day. Mon & I went with the kids in A.M. & then papa, Isa,
Mon & I went to Frankville to Mr. Ferris' funeral. We had dinner at
Harriet's (She & Ruth both live in Frankville). They had a short service
at Ruth's for her father & then to Waukon for the funeral service
& burial. We went to the church but not to the cemetry. Stopped at Decorah
a few minutes on our way home. Got back to B.O. about 5. Arthur had driven papa's
car home from school so he & mama came home with us & got it. B.O.H.S.
played baseball at Calmar this P.M. but Arthur didn't go. We sure had
some ride today & was very glad we could go & see all the folks. Earl
& his wife came this A.M. about 3. They drove 28 hrs.
Sat. Apr. 14
Nice day. Some warmer. Dean took Nell up to Gust's in A.M., so he could
use her awhile, and didn't get back until about 3. Mon & Arthur went
over to Harry's in A.M. & got the fanning mill & cleaned our grain.
Dean & I went down in Marion's woods & then on down to the creek
after he got home. We found some flowers. We went up town in eve. I went up
home. Olive & the kids were there too. We got home about 12.
Sun. Apr. 15
Dandy day. The boys & I went up home & spent the day & Mon went
over to Chas. Porter's too see Marion. Leonard Marion & Marvin were
up home in P.M. too. We got $5 worth of potatoes from Lester part pay for the
cow. 220 lbs.
Mon. Apr. 16
Nice day but the wind was cold. Mon went up to Jacks in A.M. early & got
his disc & used that all day.
Tues. Apr. 17
Dandy nice warm day. I did part of my washing & ironed it too. Dad P. was
here for dinner. Mon finished with the disc today.
Wed. Apr. 18
Terribly windy day. So much dust blowing in A.M. but it rained quite a little
shower at noon so it settled the dust some. Mon sold some oats to Mabel this
A.M. & Stub R. hauled them. Mon bought his grass seed at Cecils & brot
it home with him about 1 P.M. He took the disc home & then we went to B.O.
after the kids. I went up home awhile. We went up to Gust's in eve &
then Mon, Gust & the boys went up town awhile. Sold 4290 lbs oats @ 30¢
per bu. brought $40.22. 150 lbs. timothy, 50 lbs. (?allsike?), 1 box nitra &
3 sacks came to $25.22.
Thurs. Apr. 19
Mama's 62nd Birthday. Not very nice day. Cold & windy. Snowed quite
hard in A.M. Mon helped Gust today. I went up home with the kids in A.M. &
spent the day with mama. Ella & Mrs. Stroud & Isa were there in P.M.
Arthur came home & forgot me after school so papa bro't me home. Glen
Abrahamson plowed the head lands & another strip of land for us this P.M.
& he was here for supper.
Fri. Apr. 20
Not very warm day. I finished my washing in A.M. & did my ironing in P.M.
Mon dragged all day. Wind blew hard in P.M.
Sat. Apr. 21
Not very nice day. Rained & snowed off & on all day & eve. Mon &
Arthur took turns dragging in A.M. Dean went up to Gusts a few minutes in A.M.
Uncle Geo. & Leonard were here for dinner. In P.M. Arthur, Dean, mama, Isa
& I went to Decorah. Very large crowd in town. Could hardly get waited on
in the stores. Got home about 5:30. Mon finished dragging in P.M. & went
up to Gust's & got the seeder. We went up town in eve. Didn't
go up home. Rather rainy.

Nice day, but cool. Dean was gone all day. Arthur went over to Webb's
in P.M. but Roy wasn't at home so he came home. Mon & I took a walk
down along Silver Creek this P.M. Luke O'B. came & got his calf this
P.M. & paid for the care of him & for his hay. $22.
Mon. Apr. 23
Terribly windy day. In A.M. the dust was so bad you couldn't see anywhere,
but it wasn't quite as bad in P.M. Pretty cold. Windy went down some in
eve. Mon started seeding this A.M. but the wind blew so hard he quit at noon.
We went up town a few minutes in eve. I went up home. Tom Knox died about 9:30
P.M.
Tues. Apr. 24
Dean's 14th Birthday. Cold, windy day. Mon seeded all day. Froze hard
tonite. Snowed & rained some in P.M.
Wed. Apr. 25
Somewhat warmer but still a cold wind. I washed & ironed. Mon seeded all
day. We went up to Gust's a few min's in eve & stopped at Geo's
a few minutes on our way home.
Thurs. Apr. 26
Windy, cool day. Mon finished seeding at noon & then took the seeder home
after dinner. He dragged after he got back from Gust's. Tom Knox was buried
this A.M.
Fri. Apr. 27
Not so windy & some warmer. Mon dragged in A.M. & we cleaned up the
garden in P.M. Mrs. Lovlien, Harold, Audry & Delores were here a few minutes
at noon. Albert Erickson was operated on for a ruptured appendix at the Decorah
Hospital late this P.M.
Sat. Apr. 28
Nice warm day but terribly windy & dusty. Dean went fishing & was gone
all day. Came home with 15 nice big ones. Mon & Arthur went down to Lange's
early in A.M. & borrowed their grass seeder & sowed our alfalfa. I went
along with them at noon when they took it back. Stopped & visited a few
minutes. Arthur finished the dragging in P.M. & Mon hauled some manure.
We went up town in eve. I went up home awhile. Spottie had a calf today.

Nice warm day but windy & dusty. Mon, Dean & I went down to Henry Aaby's
& spent the day. They live down on the Hospital Farm. Henry is going to
build the new barn. Ed Quandahls were there too. We spent the P.M. at the river
fishing but no one had any luck. Had supper there & came home about 6. Had
a flat tire on our way home. Arthur stayed at home all day.
Mon. Apr. 30
Very warm windy day. Mon went over to Harry's in A.M. & bro't
home a little puppy. He went over there in P.M. & got Harry's walking
plow & he & Dean plowed the garden. Walt Rehwinkel was here for dinner.
Tues. May 1
Hot windy day. Mon & I went to B.O. with the kids in A.M. & then Mon,
Isa & I went to Decorah. Isa & I went down too see Wilbur. He is so
much better. We couldn't get in to see Albert Erickson's tho'.
Got back up to mama's & had dinner & then Mon & I came home.
We went back to B.O. after the kids when school was out. Dean went along too.
First dance at the Pavilion tonite. We went up a few minutes. The music was
sure bum. We took Marion home. Got home about 11:30.
Wed. May 2
Pretty warm day. The wind blew hard again. Marion was over & helped Mon
all day fixing the windmill. Lizzie & I went down to Jane's in P.M.
to L.L.A.S. Not so many out. Sure had a fine lunch. The boys & I went over
to Alberts a minute in eve. We had 16 little pigs today but one died.
Thurs. May 3
Pretty warm day. Rather cloudy at times. Sprinkled a few times during the day.
Mon worked at the hog house most of the day. Jack Whalen was here awhile in
A.M. Stewed. Papa came down at noon & took me to Club at Hilda E's.
Large crowd out. Mrs. Walter Ward & Alberta Van Vleit were initiated. Had
a dandy lunch. Arthur came after me. Had 7 little pigs.
Fri. May 4
Dandy nice day. Wind blew hard in P.M. part of the time. Mon got hurt by an
old sow in A.M. so he didn't feel very well for a while. He dragged corn
stalks in P.M. I washed & ironed. Had 9 more little pigs.
Sat. May 5
Pretty warm day. Mon & Arthur got Harry's hay rake & they took
turns raking up corn stalks & then they burned them. Jack came down in P.M.
& Mon took him to Prosper. They took his wool up there & sold it. Mon
got back about supper time. We went to B.O. in eve. Mon took us up & then
went back & got Jack's family. I went up to the Pavilion with Geo
& Vera. Kelly's played. Big crowd & had a good time. Mon took
Jack's home about 11 & then came back after us. We got home about
1:15. The Brown heifer had a little calf. Had 8 more little pigs.
Sun. May 6
Pretty warm day. Wind blew pretty hard in P.M. and the dust also. We went up
home about 10 & then papa & I went to Church. Rev. Tenny preached. Mon
sold a sow ($9) to Walt & Ray & they came for him just after dinner
to go & get her. It didn't take them long to get her. We came home
about 5. Loyal came home with us.
Mon. May 7
Pretty warm day. Some breeze though. Clouded up in P.M. & looked pretty
rainy but cleared off again. Mon started plowing for corn today. We went up
town a few min's in eve. Didn't go up home. Papa started working
up by Wykoff today.
Tues. May 8
Rained quite a shower in A.M. but cleared off & was nice in P.M. but windy.
Some cooler. Mon plowed in A.M. until it rained & again in P.M. I planted
some garden in P.M.
Wed. May 9
Terribly windy day. The dust was just terrible. Mighty warm too. Mon plowed.
The B.O.H.S. gave a reception & banquet for the Senior Class at the Lutheran
Church in eve. Arthur gave the address of welcome. He took lemon pie & escalloped
corn.
Thurs. May 10
Terrible day. Worse than yesterday. Wind & dust until you could hardly breathe.
Everything covered with dirt. The house is just full of it. Mon plowed in A.M.
but it was so bad he didn't go out to plow in P.M.
Fri. May 11
Quite a nice day. Mon plowed. I washed in A.M. Arthur got home from school about
2 P.M. & as soon as I finished mopping the floor after he got home he &
I went to Decorah. Got home about 5. Arthur, Dean & I went up town awhile
in eve. We were to practice for the "Mothers Day Program" but we
didn't. They were supposed to have a dance for the baseball boys in eve
but no one came. Howard was over in eve.
Sat. May 12
Cloudy, cold, windy day. Mon & the boys fixed fence in A.M. At noon the
boys took me to B.O. The Joan of Arc had a program & lunch for the mothers
of the community at the Lutheran Church. Quite a crowd out. Sure had a nice
lunch. Sandwiches, pickles, devil & angel food cake, coffee & ice cream.
I went home with mama. We rode up with Pearl & Cora Darling. It started
to rain about 1:30 & kept it up until about 6. Rained mighty hard some times
too. Quite a bit of thunder & lightning. Papa got home about 5:30. Mon &
the boys came up after me in eve.
Sun. May 13
Mother's Day. Nice day but cool. Harry was over in A.M. We went up home
& spent the day. Claude's, Lester's, Dell's & Aunt
Lissa were there too. Picnic dinner. Had a dandy dinner & a good visit.
The men folks went to Bluffton in P.M. to a ball game between Bluffton &
B.O. B.O. won. We got home about 6.
Mon. May 14
Nice day but rather windy. Mon plowed all day. Howard was over a while in eve,
then he & Mon went up town & Pearl & Verna stayed here while they
were gone. Froze some tonite.
Tues. May 15
Nice day. Mon dragged in A.M. & plowed in P.M. Brayton Whitney came down
after dinner & took Lizzie & I to B.O. The Mothers & children of
the grade school & the Freshman & Sophmore Classes had a surprise shower
for Charlotte Hegg in P.M. at the school house. Quite a few out. She got quite
a few nice presents. We had a dandy nice lunch. Everyone took lunch. We came
home with the kids. Mon & I went over to Gust's awhile in eve. Pretty
cool.
Wed. May 16
Papa's 69th Birthday. Terribly windy, dusty day. Our last day of school
here in this district. Had a picnic. I went. Mon was plowing & he wouldn't
go. Dad P. was here & ate dinner with him. Dean & I went over to Pearl's
a while in P.M.
Thurs. May 17
Nice hot day. Mon dragged. Dean & I went up to Vera's in P.M. to Club.
Caught a ride part way with Dorothea W. Quite a crowd out. Had a dandy lunch.
B.O.H.S. played their last game of ball this season against Calmar at B.O. Got
skunked. Dean & Donald rode up town with Claude W. I walked part way home
& rode part way with Art & Hazel.
Fri. May 18
Pretty hot windy day. Dean & I went with the kids in A.M. & Arthur took
us to Mabel too see Dr. Nass. Dean has ring worms or calf itch & Dr. Nass
fixed it up for him. Hurt him quite a bit. Isa went to Mabel with us. We got
back here about noon & had dinner & then Arthur went back to school.
Mon dragged in A.M. & started planting after dinner. I was out with him
most of the P.M. Dean felt pretty bum so he slept most of the P.M. The Sophmores
& Freshmen had a weiner roast over at Mabel Kimber's farm in eve &
Arthur went. Arthur's grades are high enough so he doesn't have
to go back to school next week.
Sat. May 19
Windy hot day. Mon planted corn & Arthur dragged. Dean feels better today.
He & I shelled corn & a little of everything else. We went up town in
eve. I went to the dance at the Pavilion. Kelly's played. Not such a crowd
at first but the floor was pretty crowded before the dance was done with. Vernon
Weldon went & came with us. He works for Dave.
Sun. May 20
Pretty hot day. Clouded up late in P.M. & looked quite rainy but it didn't
rain. Mama & papa were down awhile in P.M. Albert, Florence, Uncle Marion
& the kids were here a minute in P.M. Albert looks just fine. He got home
last nite. Lizzie, Maxine, Arthur & I went to B.O. in eve. They had the
Baccalaureate Service for the B.O.H.S. graduating class at the Lutheran Church.
Rev. Hoff of Decorah gave the Sermon. Arthur & Manford Whitney were usher's.
Billie Lange, Pauline Manning, Lucile McConnel, Bertha Gilbertson, Garner Sheley
& Merlyn Pierce were the graduates. It sure was a nice service.
Mon. May 21
Sprinkled some early in A.M. but cleared off & was nice until in P.M. It
clouded up again in P.M. & looked like we were going to have a bad storm
but it only sprinkled some off & on in P.M. Got quite cool late in P.M.
Mon & Arthur finished planting & dragging in A.M. Mon & Dean took
the planter back to Gust's in P.M. Arthur didn't do much of anything.
Howard was over a while in eve. Had another bad dust storm in P.M.
Tues. May 22
Nice day but quite a little cooler. Mon went up & got mama in A.M. &
we planted potatoes in P.M. Arthur & Dean took her home about 5:30. Papa
got home tonite. He fell & hurt his arm.
Wed. May 23
Looked rather rainy most of the day but only sprinkled some. Rather cool. Papa,
mama & Isa came down early in A.M. Arthur took papa to Decorah too see the
Dr. about his arm. He got a new pair of light pants & papa gave him a pretty
tie. They got back here about noon. Mon, mama, Isa & I planted potatoes
& some other things. The folks went home about 2. Pearl & Verna were
here in P.M. Mon went over to Carolon's & worked in papa's place
this P.M. We went up town a few minutes in eve.
Thurs. May 24
Nice day. Mon went back to Carolon's & worked today. They finished
laying the cement today. The H.S. kids had to go back too school today. Their
last day. Gust was here & got the boar & Dean went home with him. I
washed & did most of my ironing. Geo & Vera came & got me in eve
& we went over to Krumm's to practice. Had a good practice & then
some good music after practice.
Fri. May 25
Nice day. Floyd A. was here & got a small jag of hay in A.M. Mon & I
took Dean to Mabel again this P.M. Arthur went to B.O. Arthur & I went to
B.O. in eve to the B.O.H.S. Commencement exercises at the M.E. Church. Dr. Olson
from Luther College gave the address. Large crowd out. Maxine went with us but
she came home with her folks. Mrs. James Smalley died today.
Sat. May 26
Pretty warm day. The men did a little of everything. Mon didn't feel very
well. Hazel O. & the boys were down awhile in A.M. We went up town awhile
in eve. I went up home. Ruth & Bill Coltie & little Ruth were there
to stay all nite. We went to Art's & Hazel to a dance after we got
home from town. Quite a few there. They had a good time. I danced once. We got
home about 2.
Sun. May 27
Dandy day. We went to Claude's & spent the day. Claude, Mon &
Arthur went to B.O. in P.M. to a Ball Game. Didn't have much of a game
though. Had lunch there & got home about 6. Sure had a good time. We went
over to Lovlien's in eve to practice. Took Vera G. too. Mon stayed at
Happy's. Arthur Smith's were there too & we practiced for the
funeral. Got home about 10.
Mon. May 28
Pretty warm day. Didn't do much of anything. Mon, Dean & I went to
B.O. about 1 P.M. to the funeral. Vera went with us. Vera & I sang &
Louise played (Mrs. Smalleys). We sang "The Old Rugged Cross", "Beautiful
Isle" & "Going Down the Valley." Went up home awhile after
the funeral. Harlan came home with us. Looked pretty rainy in eve but didn't
rain.
Tues. May 29
Terribly hot day. I went to Decorah about 9:30 A.M. with Geo & Vera &
the kids. Farm Bureau Achievement Day at the L.C. Gym. Large crowd out. Had
a swell dinner. Vera, Audry, Kate & I sang in the county chorus & then
we sang "Stars of a Summer Night" & "The Old Spinning
Wheel". Had a good program. B.O., Frankville & Springfield tied for
high score. We got home about 5. 8th grade Graduation Exercise at Decorah today.
Donald was one & so was Marie. Harlan went home this P.M. Howard was over
in eve.
Wed. May 30
Another hot day. Didn't do much of anything.
Thurs. May 31
Hottest day yet. 110º in some places. We went up home early in A.M. &
I washed. Arthur took me over to Ruth Greenslade's in P.M. to Club. Quite
a few out for such a hot day. She had such a good lunch. I rode back to B.O.
with Ole's. Mon went with Lovliens in P.M. fishing so the boys had the
chores too do alone. Mighty hot night.
Fri. June 1
Mighty hot day. Mon got home about 9:30 A.M. but he didn't get any fish.
Lovlien's got 4. Harry Q. was here in A.M. We went up town a little while
in P.M. Mama got some fish for us from the fish man so we went up & got
them. They were sure good.
Sat. June 2
Another warm day. Did a little of everything. We went up town in eve. I went
to the dance at the Pavilion. Kelly's played. Quite a crowd. Had a good
time. Got home about 1:30. Dale Arnold was here most of the day & then he
went to B.O. with us & stayed here all nite. Accident in B.O. (?tonite?).
Mon, Dean & Dale went to Mabel in P.M. & got a screen door.
Sun. June 3
Had two or 3 dandy showers in A.M. & then it cleared up & was nice &
hot in P.M. Dale went over to Lizzie's about 10:30. Dean went with him
awhile. Mon & I took a walk around the pasture in P.M. Rather slim but still
not as bad as a good many pastures.
Mon. June 4
Pretty hot in A.M. Clouded up about noon & rained off & on all P.M.
Sometimes pretty hard. Pretty hard thunder & lightning sometimes too. Harry
Q. was here most of A.M. & for dinner. We went up town in P.M. I went up
home. Isa & the boys were there. Mon went & voted but I didn't.
Loyal came home with us. It rained off & on all nite too. Sure did lots
of good.
Tues. June 5
Pretty warm day. Mon & Arthur plowed corn in P.M. I worked in the garden
in P.M. Papa stopped tonite & hung our new screen door.
Wed. June 6
Rather cool, cloudy day. Arthur plowed corn all day. Mon, Loyal & Dean planted
potatoes & melons in A.M. & then Mon & I set out about 200 strawberry
plants. Mon plowed corn late in P.M. after we got down with the strawberries.
Thurs. June 7
Terribly windy & dusty. Looked pretty rainy in A.M. but didn't rain.
Mon went over to Fred Walters in A.M. & got some potatoes. They finished
plowing corn the first time this P.M. We went up town in eve. Loyal went home.
I went up home awhile.
Fri. June 8
Rained off & on all day. Rained very hard in eve. Quite a lot of thunder
& lightning. Arthur, Dean & I went up to mama's to wash. Isa &
Loyal were there for dinner too.
Sat. June 9
Nice warm day. Did a little of everything. Stanley, Catherine, Ruth Ellen &
Catherine's mother were here a few minutes in P.M. We went to B.O. in
eve. Went up to the Pavilion. Quite a crowd there but the music didn't
show up so different ones from around here played & they had a free dance.
Had a good time. Got home about 1. Pretty cool nite.
Sun. June 10
Dandy day. Rather cool. We went over & got Marion about 9 A.M. & went
to Frankville & spent the day with Ruth & Francis. Sure had a good time.
Harriet, Otto, Martha & Betty were there for dinner too. Got home about
7. Clifford Q's. were here awhile in eve.
Mon. June 11
Nice day. Mon & I went up & got mama in A.M. to help clean up bed bugs.
Can't imagine where we got them. Marion came & helped Mon in A.M.
& then they went fishing. They didn't get home until after 6 &
then Mon, Marion & Dean took mama home. They came back & finished chores
& had their supper & then Mon took Marion home.
Tues. June 12
Nice day. Mon & Dean fixed fence. Arthur & I went to Decorah. Took papa
& mama. Papa got a catch in his back & went down too see the Dr. Got
back up home about 12:30. Had dinner & then came home. Arthur helped with
the fence too after we got home.
Wed. June 13
Quite a warm day. Mon & Arthur plowed corn. Harold, Audry, Dolores &
Mrs. L. were here in eve. Mrs. L. got some eggs too set. Howard & Harry
Q. were here too. Harry didn't go home until about 11.
Thurs. June 14
Sprinkled off & on most of A.M. Rather cloudy in P.M. We had our Joan of
Arc Picnic at Cold Water. Not so many there but we sure had a swell dinner &
a good time. All the ice cream anyone could eat in P.M. Got home about 5. Did
up the chores & then went back up town. The men listened to the Baer –
Carnera fight. Baer won by a decision. I stayed at mama's.
Fri. June 15
Warm dusty day. Mon & Arthur plowed corn in A.M. Arthur did in P.M. too,
but Mon & Dean went up to Gust's after the manure spreader.
Sat. June 16
Beautiful day. Arthur hauled manure. Mon did other jobs. We went up town in
eve. Clouded up in eve & was sprinkling some when we came home from town
about 1. Went up to the Pavilion but didn't go in. German Band from Waterloo
played. Not so good. Quite a crowd. Gordon Reid & Dorothea Ward were married
this P.M.
Sun. June 17
Fathers Day. Quite nice until about noon it clouded up & rained pretty hard
some times during P.M. We went up home & spent the day. Lester's were
there too. Ad & Torgie were there for dinner. Mon & Lester went to the
Ball game in P.M. B.O. & Spillville. B.O. got beat. Willie & Vera Dinger
were at mama's in P.M.
Mon. June 18
Nice day. Arthur plowed corn. Mon went to B.O. in A.M. & got his corn plow
fixed. He worked in the garden after he got home. We went up to Art's
a minute in eve. I washed & ironed.
Tues. June 19
Nice day until late in P.M. it clouded up & looked like rain. Pretty warm.
Dean & I went to Decorah with Howard in P.M. & got Dean a new pair of
slippers. We went to B.O. in eve to a shower & dance at the Pavilion for
Gordon & Dorothea. Large crowd out & had a good time. Gorman's
played. The kids got lots of nice presents. Maxine & Aleda Blomgreen went
with us. Quite a storm about 1:30. Wind blew hard & it rained hard. We got
home around 2. Didn't rain much here. The wind did quite a bit of damage
at some places around the country.
Wed. June 20
Nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. Had a nice little shower about 6 P.M. We
didn't do much of anything all day. Dave came over in P.M. to get Mon
& Arthur to help him get his hay loader out of his machine shed. The wind
last nite blew his machine shed around & moved his corn crib.
Thurs. June 21
Pretty warm day. Mama came down with papa in A.M. when he went to work, and
hoed the potatoes. Mon, Dean & I took her home after dinner. Arthur plowed
corn all day. Mon plowed in A.M. He drove the team to B.O. after we got back
from taking mama home.
Fri. June 22
Quite cool & nice in A.M. but it was sure hot in P.M. Mon & Arthur finished
plowing corn for this time in A.M. Didn't do much of anything in P.M.
The goslings finished hatching today. Got 14 but 1 got killed. Queen had a little
calf today. Little son born to Inez & Warren Harvey.
Sat. June 23
Pretty hot in A.M. Clouded up in P.M. & we had a small shower. Some hail
too. Looked like a pretty bad storm about 6 again, but we only got a shower
& some more hail. Not enough to do any damage though. We went to B.O. in
eve. Went up to the Pavilion. Gossman's played. Good music & a good
time. Got home about 1.
Sun. June 24
Pretty hot day. We stayed at home all day & eve. Buddy Q. was here &
played with Dean awhile. Mr. Haugen & Arthur were here in P.M. & got
3 sacks of corn.
Mon. June 25
Mighty hot day. Clouded up & sprinkled a little in A.M. & then cleared
off. Clouded up again late in P.M. Looked like we were going to have a hard
storm in P.M. but we didn't. Looked bad again in eve but the wind just
blew pretty hard & we had a hard little shower. Didn't do much good.
Mr. Lovlien, Harold & Bill Erickson were here in A.M. early, they insured
our stock fodder & hay & household goods. Mon went up town with Harold
& he didn't get back until about 4 P.M. Jim Wade died suddenly this
A.M. Big dance to be in Terry McConnels barn this eve but on account of the
rain we didn't go. They came & got our lantern this P.M.
Tues. June 26
Nice day. Not so warm. I washed. Mon went to B.O. a few minutes in A.M. Got
a pk. of new potatoes (35). Arthur was mowing weeds late in P.M. & while
sharpening the scythe he cut two fingers quite badly. Dad P. was here awhile
in A.M.
Wed. June 27
Terribly hot day. 104º. I went to B.O. in P.M. with Dave's to Jim
Wade's funeral. Very large crowd. Not room in the church for them all.
The Male Quartet sang. Went from the funeral down to Kate Leonhart's to
Lutheran L.A.S. She sure had a large crowd and a dandy lunch. Maxine bro't
me home. Pearl was over in eve & got water, they have to haul their water
from here, & Henry went home with her. Howard & Jack Whalen had been
to Decorah this P.M. & they were over there feeling pretty good. Mon &
Howard took Jack home about 10.
Thurs. June 28
Pretty warm day but nothing like yesterday. The wind was in the north and east
so the breeze was cooler. Arthur plowed corn in A.M. Mon took Vera, Junior,
Gladys & I to Club at Maude J's. Quite a crowd out. Had a nice lunch.
Ole came & got us. We got home about 4. Mon drove the team up town in P.M.
Howards were over in eve.
Fri. June 29
Pretty warm day. The men plowed corn. I did a little of everything.
Sat. June 30
Warm day again. The men plowed corn in A.M. Pearl was over in A.M. awhile. We
went up town in eve. I went up home awhile & then back down town again.
Arthur had driven the car up to the Pavilion so Mon & I walked up there
after the store closed. Didn't stay up there long. Got home about 12:30.
Sun. July 1
Pretty warm day. We went down to Dad Price's & spent the day. Helen
& Chas. were there too. Warren & Sid were home for Sunday too. Had a
picnic dinner. Had a nice dinner too, then Sid went & got ice cream. Dad
is going on a trip thro' the West soon so we were all home on that account.
Got home about 6. Did up our chores & then Mon, Dean & I went up to
Haugens awhile.
Mon. July 2
Pretty hot day. We went up home about 11 & stayed there until after dinner.
Didn't do much when we got home.
Tues. July 3
Rather cloudy day, but pretty warm in P.M. I picked goosberries in A.M. &
raspberries in P.M. We went up town in eve. Went up home a little while.
Wed. July 4
Started raining sometime in the night & kept it up off & on until about
noon. Was quite nice in P.M. We were at Dave's at a picnic. Quite a few
there. Had a dandy good dinner & a good time. In P.M. Mon, Happy, Floyd
& Vernie went to B.O. & got ice cream so we all had ice cream. We bro't
the tub home with us & made ice cream with the ice that was left. Happy,
Audry, Delores & Bertha Mc. came over & ate ice cream with us. Then
we all went to B.O. to the Dance. Gossmans played. Frank O'Brien played
the violin & it sure was good music. Good big crowd over 500 numbers. Had
a good time. Got home about 2:30.
Thurs. July 5
Looked rainy all day & did sprinkle some off & on. Didn't do much
of anything. Mon drove the team up town in P.M. Arthur & I went up a few
min's late in P.M. too see mama. She isn't feeling very good. Rained
very hard in eve. Water standing everywhere on the ground. Edith & Fred
Walters were here in P.M. awhile. She got some eggs too set. Dad Price started
on a trip thro' the West today.
Fri. July 6
Not such a warm day. Looked rather rainy in A.M. but cleared off & was nice
in P.M. I washed. The men hauled manure.
Sat. July 7
Not so warm today either. The men plowed corn. I did a little of everything.
We went up town in eve. Went up to the Pavilion. Very large crowd there, outside.
Not so many inside. Little Don Little & his orchestra played. Not much music
to it. Mostly noise. We got home about 1:30. Got a sack of Loaf King Flour $1.70
+ tax.
Sun. July 8
Nice day. We went up home & spent the day. Went over to Harry's awhile
in eve. Mrs. Robinson died this eve.
Mon. July 9
Rather cloudy cool day. Arthur plowed corn in A.M. Warren came up about 8:30
A.M. & stayed until after dinner. Gust was here in A.M. awhile. Dell Mc.,
Wilbur Duprey & Vincel were here just after dinner & Wilbur bo't
Arthur's sow for $12.50. I went along with the folks when they went to
deliver her. Went up to Geo's a minute when we got home. Had a hard rain
in the nite.
Tues. July 10
Pretty warm day. We went up home in A.M. Mrs. Robinson was buried at B.O. today.
Mama got dinner for the bunch from St. Paul. There were 3 ladies with Bill &
Ruth & the 2 undertakers. Not so many out to the funeral. Philip, Arthur,
Vera & I sang "God Will Take Care of You," "Rock of Ages"
& "God Be With You Till We Meet Again." They were all up home
for lunch before they started back to St. Paul. Papa, mama & Marie were
here a few minutes in eve. Marie is staying up home this week.
Wed. July 11
Pretty warm day. Looked rainy at times & sprinkled some too. I washed in
A.M. Arthur mowed hay until about 2:30 P.M. Mon helped Harry awhile in A.M.
After Arthur got done mowing he, Dean, mama & I went to Decorah. Mama &
I went down to the Hospital too see Wilbur. He looks lots better, but his legs
are not healing very fast. Arthur & Dean each got new shoes & Arthur
got some other new clothes. We got home about 6.
Thurs. July 12
Pretty warm day. Looked rainy, but just sprinkled off & on in P.M. I ironed
in A.M. Mon & Dean plowed corn. Arthur helped Dave awhile in A.M. Arthur
& Dean took me up to Gladys' at noon & I went from there to Club
at Gerthrude's with Donald, Vera & Gladys. Quite a crowd out. Had
a dandy lunch. Got home about 4. We sold all our old hogs in A.M. & Harold
R. hauled them at noon. Mon went with him & then Arthur & Dean went
& got him. They put up a load of hay after they got home. The 5 sows weighed
1340 & bro't $52.40, 6 at $3.50 per cwt & 1 at $2 (yearling at
180 lbs & the stag at 390 lbs.)
Fri. July 13
Rather cloudy & cool in A.M. Sprinkled some. We went up home about 11. Had
dinner there & then Arthur, Dean, Papa, Marie & I went to Decorah. Got
pretty warm down there. Large crowd in town. Mon & I went over to Lovliens
a little while in eve.
Sat. July 14
Pretty warm day. Did a little of everything. Arthur & Mon mowed a while
in P.M. We went to B.O. in eve. Went up to the Pavilion awhile. Didn't
go in Kelly's played. Not such a large crowd inside but quite a crowd
outside. Got home about 1. Mrs. Duprey died this P.M.
Sun. July 15
Very nice & cool in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & looked quite rainy.
Started to rain about 5 P.M. & kept it up off & on the rest of the eve.
Rained most of the nite too I guess. Sometimes pretty hard. We took our dinner
to Bluffton & met Claude's down there. Had our dinner in the old park.
Went to the Ball game after dinner. Over on Luke OB's flat. Bluffton &
Canoe. Canoe won 15 to 5. Some game but they had a lot of fun.
Mon. July 16
Rained off & on all day & sometimes quite hard. We went up town a little
while in P.M. I went up home. Isa & Hazel R. were there awhile. Roads were
pretty muddy.
Tues. July 17
Nice day. Rather warm. Arthur mowed & raked hay. Mon & I went to Mrs.
Duprey's funeral at 2 P.M. at the A.C. Church. John Wicks preached the
sermon. Ruth K. & I sang "Nearer My God to Thee," "Abide
With Me", & "Lead Kindly Light." Very large crowd out.
They put in a load of hay after we got home. We went over to Lovliens in eve
after our cracked corn. I stayed at Audry's while the men went over to
Henry's after the corn. Mon bought his binding twine today. Ida Quandahl
was here a few minutes in P.M. Duprey's gave the 3 of us $5 for the choir.
Wed. July 18
Rather rainy day. Patched & did a little of everything. The men didn't
do much of anything.
Thurs. July 19
Mighty hot muggy day. I washed. Arthur mowed in A.M. Mon helped Howard in A.M.
We went up town after dinner awhile. Tried too cool off but it didn't
help much. Arthur mowed awhile in P.M. after we got home. We took our supper
out in the pasture in a nice shady place, but it wasn't very cool there.
Looked quite rainy in eve but didn't rain. Mighty hot nite.
Fri. July 20
Another hot day. The men hayed. They got their chores done early & we went
to town. Joan of Arc had an Ice Cream Social on Mae's lawn. Large crowd
out. Sold over 17 gal. of cream besides buns & coffee & cake. Pretty
warm nite. We got home about 11.
Sat. July 21
Mighty hot day. Mama walked down early in A.M. to hoe potatoes. She hoed until
noon & then it was so hot she didn't go out again. We took her home
about 3. Dean went with her & stayed up there until eve. We went up town
in eve. Went up to the Pavilion & listened to the music awhile. The Little
German Band from Mason City played. They were sure good. Not many in dancing,
but quite a crowd outside. We got home about 1:30. Sure was warm up there.
Sun. July 22
Hot day. We went up to Geo's for dinner & then went with them to "Niagra
Cave" in P.M. (The boys stayed at Geo's.) I only went as far as
the "Wishing Well" but the rest of them went all the way. It sure
is cold down there. It is a wonderful place all right. Plenty of steps to go
up & down. We stopped too see the finish of the B.O. – Canoe ball
game on our way home. Canoe won. Stopped at John Gates a minute on our way home
too. Got home here about 6.
Mon. July 23
Another hot day. The folks hayed some. Arthur broke the mower in P.M. &
we went to Mabel after repairs but couldn't get them. Stopped at B.O.
a few minutes on our way home. Got some weiners at Mabel so had a weiner roast
in the woods in eve in place of supper.
Tues. July 24
Hot day again. Went to Decorah early in A.M. & got the repairs for the mower.
Arthur finished the mowing in P.M. We went down to Bluffton in eve & then
stopped at McConnels on our way back and listened to the music awhile. Didn't
get out of the car. Mighty warm. Too warm to sleep. Mag had a calf today.
Wed. July 25
Rather cool early in A.M. but warmed up & sure was a hot day. They finished
the haying this A.M. & went to B.O. in P.M. with Lizzie & Maxine to
Nell Mannings burial. The funeral was at the Funeral Home at Decorah but the
burial was at B.O. We got there too late for the burial tho'. Went down
to Aunt Lissa's a few minutes on our way home. Looked pretty rainy in
eve. Rained a little. When the boys went after the cows they found Mag down
with milk fever. We called Dr. Reedy & he came over & fixed her up.
Brought her out all O.K. She sure was pretty bad.
Thurs. July 26
Rained terribly hard early in A.M. about 4 & then again from 5 until about
7. Cleared off & was a nice cool day. Mon & Arthur took Gladys, Vera
& I to Club at Vera Knox's. Dean went to B.O. with Donald & Frank.
Muriel & Marjorie T. went from B.O. with us to Club. Vera had a large crowd
& a nice lunch. Arthur came over after us. When we got back to town Ole
was there so Gladys rode home with him. Mon & Rupert G. went to Decorah
in P.M. so it was after six before they got back & it made us late getting
home. Loyal came home with us.
Fri. July 27
Nice cool day. I washed & ironed some. The men folks started cutting grain
here about 10 A.M.
Sat. July 28
Nice day. Rather cool. Mon cut grain all day. Arthur shocked in A.M. & threshed
at Ole's in P.M. We went up town in eve. Went up to the Pavilion awhile
& listened to the music. Kelly's played. Not such a big crowd. Pretty
cool. We got home about 1. Loyal went home tonite.
Sun. July 29
Nice cool day. Fred W. was here awhile in A.M. We went over to McCauley's.
Effie's Birthday & they had a surprise party for her. Had a nice dinner
& good time. Quite a few there. Mon went to Hesper in P.M. to the Ball Game
with Happy (B.O. lost) & Arthur went up to Louie U's. to the other
Ball Game (B.O. & St. Lucas & B.O. won) so it was rather late when Arthur
came back after me. We got home some after 5. Maxine & O'Dean rode
home with us. Howard, Pearl & Verna were over & spent the eve.
Mon. July 30
Nice day. Not too hot. Mama came down with papa in A.M. & stayed until he
went home at night. She hoed their potatoes & pulled weeds. Mon cut grain
all day. Arthur threshed at Jack's until about 2 P.M. We had green corn
out of the field today.
Tues. July 31
Nice cool day. Mon finished cutting grain about 5 P.M. Arthur went threshing
at Krumm's in A.M. He got home about 11. We went up town in eve. I went
up home awhile. Jimmie Hellum died at the Cresco Hospital this P.M. from an
appendicitis operation & complications.
Wed. Aug. 1
Nice day. Quite a bit warmer. Papa bro't Harlan down in A.M. & he
spent the day here & went home with papa at nite. Mon threshed at Fred Walter's
in A.M. & until about 2 P.M. & then he & Arthur both went to Harry's
to thresh. Dean & Harlan were at Harry's most of the P.M. too. Mon
& I went over to Gust's in eve.
Thurs. Aug. 2
Dandy nice day. We went up home early in A.M. & I washed. Came home about
2:30. Little son born to Bessie & Johnnie Johnson.
Fri. Aug. 3
Rather warm day. I ironed & did a lot of other things. Mon, Dean & I
went over to Daves a few minutes in eve. Jimmie Hellum was buried at Hesper
today.
Sat. Aug. 4
Nice day. Not so warm in A.M. but got pretty warm in P.M. Clouded up late in
P.M. but didn't rain until between 8 & 9 & then it sure rained
hard for awhile. Rained off & on then during the nite. Mon went up town
early in A.M. & got almost a bushel of peaches (all Cecil had left) &
we canned them. Got 24 qts. & then ate a lot. Gust was here in A.M. awhile.
Arthur doesn't feel very good today. Mon, Dean & I went up town in
eve awhile. Came home in the mud. Arthur's cow had a calf today.
Sun. Aug. 5
Rather cloudy in A.M. but cleared off about 10:30 & was nice the rest of
the day. Clouded up in eve but it didn't rain. We went up home about 10
& Arthur & papa went to Lanesboro to an Odd Fellow picnic. Mon went
to the Ball Game in P.M. B.O. & Bluffton & Bluffton won. We had a supper
up to mama's. Got home about 6:30.
Mon. Aug. 6
Nice day. Pretty warm. Gust came over in A.M. & was here for dinner. We
went after thresh help in eve & went to B.O. Stopped at Gust's &
got some apples. He went to town with us.
Tues. Aug. 7
Nice until late in P.M. it clouded up & looked pretty rainy. Pretty warm.
Didn't rain only sprinkled a little. Mon went to B.O. early in A.M. to
sign up the Corn Hog Contracts & they were so busy he couldn't. He
bro't mama & Marion home with him. Threshed a little while here in
P.M. & then the machine broke so we didn't get much done. Fred Walter's
rig. Lizzie came over in P.M. to help too. Mon & the boys took mama &
Marion home about 5 P.M. & Mon got to sign up then.
Wed. Aug. 8
Pretty hot day. Rained a shower in A.M. but cleared off & was all right
the rest of the day until late in P.M. it clouded up & looked pretty rainy.
Sprinkled some too. Rained some in the nite. Arthur went up early in A.M. &
got mama. Loyal came along too. They started threshing about 10 & just threshed
out two or 3 loads & the machine broke again. We had dinner & then some
of the men went to Decorah to get the broken part fixed & it was 3:15 when
they got back so it was about 4 when they got started to threshing again. They
finished about 5. We all took Happy & mama home. Tried to get cooled off
but it was terribly warm. Leon Wilford & Nettie Murdock were married today
& they had a shower for them at the Pavilion in eve but we were late with
the chores & we didn't go. Lutheran L.A.S. at Mrs. Lovlien's
today but we didn't get to go. Bobbie L. was here until after dinner.
He took Happys team home then. We got 257 bushels of oats.
Thurs. Aug. 9
Pretty warm day but a north breeze & that helped a little. Mon went threshing
at Fred Lange's in P.M. but the machine broke about as soon as they started
so he came home. Arthur & Dean took Gladys, Vera & I to Club at Irene's.
Good crowd & a dandy lunch. Clouded up late in P.M. & looked & sounded
pretty rainy the rest of the P.M. & nite, but it only sprinkled a little.
Fri. Aug. 10
Rained hard in A.M. sometimes & again in P.M. Quite a little cooler. Dean
doesn't feel very well. We went up town awhile in P.M. I went up home.
Isa & Harlan were there awhile.
Sat. Aug. 11
Rained off & on all day. Rather cool. Did a little of everything. Arland
& Duane Arnold were here most of the day. Arthur went to Decorah with papa
in A.M. We went up town in eve. The boys & I went up home awhile. Had a
big watermelon. Went up to the Pavilion a few minutes before we came home, after
Floyd B. He rode home with us. Got home about 12. Pat Gallagher died this eve.
Sun. Aug. 12
Quite a bit warmer. Nice day. We went over to Audreys to a surprise party for
her birthday. Quite a few there. Picnic dinner. Had a nice time. Swell dinner
& then had lunch before we came home.
Mon. Aug. 13
Rather cool, nice day. The men fixed fence in A.M. Mon, Dean & I went to
B.O. after dinner & then down to Mettie's & got some little apples
too can. Arthur fixed fence while we were gone & then Mon & Dean helped
him after we got home. I washed part of the washing in A.M.
Tues. Aug. 14
Not very nice early in A.M. It rained quite a little shower. Cleared off in
A.M. & was nice the rest of the day. Howard was over awhile in A.M. Ed D.
was here for dinner. Mon threshed at Krumms & Christ's in P.M. I ironed
in P.M. We went up town in eve. Went up home a minute.
Wed. Aug. 15
Rained very hard early in A.M. Cleared off later in A.M. & was nice the
rest of the day. We canned apples all day. Got 5 qts. canned. Went up to Ole's
a minute late in P.M. Howard & Pearl were over in eve. Pat Gallagher was
buried this A.M.

Nice day. Pretty warm a while in P.M. Mon & I went up to Gust's in
A.M. & got a sack of apples. Mon went to Lange's & Arthur to Lovlien's
in P.M. to thresh. We went up town in eve. Took Gust & Kate along. Got home
about 11.
Fri. Aug. 17
Nice day. Not too warm. Mon went up early in A.M. & got mama, Isa &
the boys. We canned 40 qts of apples & 6 qts. of plums. Mon & Dean took
them home about 4:30. Dell, Mettie, Aunt Lissa & Vin were here & spent
the eve.
Sat. Aug. 18
Dandy nice day. Pretty warm. Mon, Dean & I went up to Mrs. Koenigs in A.M.
& got some plums & apples. Mon went threshing at Gust's in P.M.
I canned 11 qts. of plums in P.M. We went up town in eve. Went up to the Pavilion
awhile. It looked pretty rainy in eve, but it didn't rain. Got pretty
cool though.
Sun. Aug. 19
Nice cool day. We went up home & spent the day. Claude's were there
too. The men all went to the Ball Game in P.M. B.O. & Mabel. B.O. won. They
didn't get back until about 6:30. Isa & the boys & Mettie were
at mama's in P.M. too.
Mon. Aug. 20
Nice cool day. Did a little of everything. The men gathered up old posts &
wood. Arthur went up home & stayed all nite.
Tues. Aug. 21
Had two or 3 showers in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Cool. The
men hauled manure in P.M. Dave was over in A.M. & Howard & Pearl in
eve. Arthur came home early this A.M. He took papa to Canton.
Wed. Aug. 22
Dandy nice day. Mon went to B.O. early in A.M. & then he took Gust to Decorah
& didn't get back until about 4. The boys hauled manure in P.M. We
went up town awhile in eve.
Thurs. Aug. 23
Rained most of A.M. but not in P.M. Rather cloudy most of the time tho'
pretty cool. Cleared off in eve. Frosted some. We went up home for dinner. I
went to Club at Sena's in P.M. with Glen & Ella & rode back with
Catherine H. Not many out. Had a nice time & nice lunch. Arthur took Lester's
to Decorah in P.M. with papa's car. Dean went along too. We got home about
5:30. Dad P. got home today from his Western trip.

Nice cool day. Rather windy. I washed & ironed. The men hauled manure &
did a little of everything.
Sat. Aug. 25
Nice cool day. The men fixed fence all day. I did a little of everything. They
did up the chores early in eve & we went to B.O. about 7. Arthur, Dean,
Harlan & Loyal went to Canton after papa. (He is working up by Albert Lea.)
I stayed with mama while they were gone. Stayed at the store the rest of eve.
We came home about 11. Mary & the white cow each had a calf today.

Dandy nice day. We went up to Annie's. Celebrating her birthday. Picnic
dinner. Not so many there. Had a nice time. Got home about 5. Dean stayed up
home all nite.
Mon. Aug. 27
Sprinkled a little in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice cool day. Mon &
Arthur did odd jobs all day. Papa, Harlan & Loyal bro't Dean home
about 5 P.M. Walt Rehwinkel was here for dinner. Arthur went up home & stayed
all nite.
Tues. Aug. 28
Nice day but cool. Arthur came home early this morn. He took papa to Canton
again. Arthur Smith & Gordon Reid were here in A.M. & measured our corn
ground & counted the hogs & fixed up the corn hog contract so maybe
we will get some money sometime. They were here for dinner. Arthur & I went
to B.O. after dinner, got mama, Isa & the boys & went down to the Russell
Cemetry. Got on the wrong road so we had a longer ride. Came back by Torge Thorson's
& stopped there a few minutes. Got back home about 5:15. Had a nice ride
and saw country we hadn't seen before. Clifford Q. & the kids were
here when we got home & then they went over to Howard's.
Wed. Aug. 29
Nice cool day. I washed & ironed. The men worked at the corn binder most
of the day. Dad P. came up about 3:30 & stayed until about 6. He went over
to Florence P's for L.A.S. supper. We went up town awhile in eve.
Thurs. Aug. 30
Sprinkled in A.M. early but cleared off & was nice in A.M. Started to rain
about 1:30 & rained off & on all P.M. Sometimes quite hard too. Arthur
& Dean went up & got mama & we left here for the Cresco Fair about
10 A.M. Not such a large crowd there as usual & the exhibits were not as
nice either. Rather cool standing around. Mama & I went over to the car
just before it started to rain & we spent the rest of the P.M. there. We
left out there about 4. Came home the paving. Stopped in Decorah a few minutes.
Got home about 6. It rained all nite I guess. Sometimes pretty hard.
Fri. Aug. 31
Rained hard in A.M. early but quit about 9:30. Sun shone some but most of the
day was cloudy. Dave was over awhile in A.M. Howard was here in P.M. The men
finished fixing the corn binder & Mon started cutting corn at Howard's
about 4:30. Mon went up town a minute in P.M. Got a sack of "Loaf King"
flour. $1.90. Grace Noecker died this A.M.
Sat. Sept. 1
Nice day. Quite a bit warmer. Mon cut corn a few minutes & broke the binder
so he went to Decorah with Howard for repairs. They were back about 11, so he
was home for dinner. He cut in P.M. then. We went up town in eve. Went up home
a few minutes. Papa came home this eve. Arthur & I went up to the Pavilion
a little while & listened to the music. It was good but not many there.
We got home about 12.
Sun. Sept. 2
Nice in A.M. Pretty warm. Clouded up after dinner & it sure did pour down
about 3 P.M. Water everywhere. Cloudy the rest of the day. Papa & mama,
Claude's & Dells were here & had a picnic dinner. We picked elderberries
& a few hazelnuts before the rain. Papa & mama went home shortly after
dinner. Claude, Dell, Mon, Arthur & Marvin went to Bluffton to a Ball Game
but the rain finished the game. They came home in the rain. Dean, Leonard &
Marion were out in the woods & they sure got soaked. Elmer G., Donald G.
& Dean S. stopped here during the rain too. Claudes & Dells went home
about 6. Grace Noecker was buried this P.M.
Mon. Sept. 3
Rained almost all day. Sometimes pretty hard. Schools started today. Dean has
Helen Curtis & Arthur has Mr. Norlie & M. Newhouse. Mon went with Arthur
& Maxine & then went to Decorah with papa & got some more repairs
for the binder. They got home about 12 & Dean got home about 3.
Tues. Sept. 4
Dandy day. Quite a bit warmer. Mon worked at the binder until about 3 &
then he cut for Howard the rest of the P.M. The boys went to school. I worked
& gathered stuff from the garden most of the day. Dad P. was here for supper
& until after they milked.
Wed. Sept. 5
Rather nice early in A.M. but clouded up & sprinkled off & on until
about 11:30 it rained quite hard & kept it up most of P.M. Mon finished
cutting corn for Howard about 10:30 A.M.
Thurs. Sept. 6
Dandy nice day. Mon cut corn for Dave. I went with Maxine & Arthur in A.M.
Went up home. Mama & Isa each got a crate of prunes & we canned them.
Had dinner at mama's & went to Club at Iona's in P.M. Large
crowd out. She had a shower for Luella. She sure got a lot of nice things. Had
a dandy lunch. I came home with the kids after school.
Fri. Sept. 7
Nice day. Mon cut corn for Dave. Arthur took the washing up to mama's
today & she did it. Zoa, Genevra, Josie, Mag Gates, Ike R & Ella were
here & got elderberries in A.M. & Donlan's & some people from
Chicago in P.M. Dad P. was here a minute late in P.M.
Sat. Sept. 8
Nice day. Mon cut corn for Dave. He was home for supper. Arthur & Dean went
up after mama early in A.M. & took her home about 4:30 P.M. We did quite
a few things. Went out in the woods awhile in P.M. Webb's were here in
P.M. & got elderberries. We went up town in eve. Got home about 12.

Nice day. We went up home & spent the day. Isa & the boys were there
in P.M.
Mon. Sept. 10
Not very nice day. Rained quite hard early in A.M. & then off & on most
of the A.M. Brightened up about noon & after dinner Mon went over to Gilbert's
to cut corn. It sure poured down here in P.M. different times. Mon came home
about 3:30. Marjorie Bergeman & Ruth O'Brien rode to school &
back with Arthur today. They are starting High School at B.O.
Tues. Sept. 11
Dandy day. Quite warm. Mon cut corn for Gilbert. I went up to Gladys'
about 11:30 & had dinner. Geo. took Vera, Gladys & I over to Elsie's
after dinner. 12 of the club girls met there & canned 50 qts. of apples
for the Orphan's Home at Council Bluffs. Arthur bro't us home.
Wed. Sept. 12
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Mon cut corn for Gilbert. I went up home with the
kids in A.M. & washed. Isa was there for dinner. Came home with the kids
in P.M.
Thurs. Sept. 13
Dandy warm day. Mon cut corn for Gilbert. He finished about 4. I was alone all
day. We went up town in eve with Howard & Pearl. It rained hard in the nite.
Fri. Sept. 14
Rather cloudy in A.M. but cleared off & was nice in P.M. until eve. Clouded
up then & rained in the nite. Mon cut corn for Howard.
Sat. Sept. 15
Rained most of the A.M. & some times pretty hard. We went up home about
11 & spent the day. Arthur went to Canton in P.M. & got papa. Arthur
got a hair cut. We got home about 6. Howard was over a minute. Pretty cool tonite.
Froze some but didn't hurt anything.

Nice day but cool. Mon & Arthur worked on the binder most of A.M. In P.M.
Mon, Arthur & Dean took Ed D. down to Sexton's too get his tractor.
He bro't it back here & was here for supper. Tom D. was here &
spent the eve. Dean S. & Howard R. were here in P.M. & got some hazelnuts.
Mon. Sept. 17
Nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & rained quite hard. Mon had too quit
cutting corn at Howard's about 3:30 on account of the rain. Ed D. was
here a few minutes in P.M.
Tues. Sept. 18
Not so nice early in A.M. but cleared up about 11 & was nice the rest of
the day. Quite warm. Mon went up town in A.M. with Ed D. He bought a bushel
of pears ($1.65). He finished cutting Howard's piece of corn this P.M.
Got done about 4. I was over to Pearl's a while in P.M. & helped her
peel apples. Doris B. was there too. Dad P. was here for supper. Dave was over
about noon for awhile.
Wed. Sept. 19
Dandy day but windy. Mon cut corn for Dave. I washed in A.M. & went over
to Lizzie's for dinner. Came home about 2 & ironed some, canned some
pears & did some other things.
Thurs. Sept. 20
Our 18th Wedding Anniversary. Mon cut corn for Dave awhile in A.M. & then
helped him shock up his corn. I went with the kids in A.M. Went up home. Went
to Club at Francis M's. at Harmony in P.M. with Anita. Quite a few out.
Had a dandy lunch & a nice time. Got back to B.O. about 5 & rode home
with the kids. Got rather cool during the day & sprinkled some. Rained in
the nite too.
Fri. Sept. 21
Cold, damp day. Teachers meeting at Decorah today so Dean didn't have
any school. I did a little of everything.
Sat. Sept. 22
Dandy day. Rather cool. Mon & the boys picked a jag of corn in A.M. &
then Mon started cutting corn here at home in P.M. I did a little of everything.
Arthur went up after papa in P.M. & I went up home & stayed until eve.
Quite a crowd in town. Stayed at the store until Agnes went to the Pavilion
& then I sat in the car until the folks were ready to come home. Gust rode
as far as his gate with us. Got home about 12:30. Arthur sold his 9 chickens.
They weighed 31 lbs. @ 13 & brot $4.03.
Sun. Sept. 23
Very nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & looked pretty bad about 4. It
sure did pour down for over an hour. We were home all day. Different ones drove
in during the day but no one stayed long. Rained hard in the nite.

Not very nice in A.M. but was nice in P.M. Mon cut corn here at home.
Tues. Sept. 25
Nice early in A.M. but clouded up & rained off & on all day. Terribly
hard in P.M. & almost all nite. Mon was over to Howards in P.M.

Not very nice day. Pretty cold. Didn't do much of anything. Dean didn't
have school today.
Thurs. Sept. 27
Nice bright day but the wind was cold. We went to Decorah about 10 A.M. &
didn't get back until after 4. Dave & Lizzie went with us. We got
our first Corn, Hog check today. $53.17 (our share). Very large crowd in town.
Some quite happy. Jane G. was here after we got home & got some cucumbers.
We went up town awhile in eve. I went up home. Papa is home for a few days.
Fri. Sept. 28
Rather nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. Mama & papa came down in A.M.
& papa gathered seed corn & mama helped me wash. Mon cut corn. Floyd
B. shocked. Mon took me up to Ole's at noon & I went to a special
Club meeting at Mae W's. with them. Vera & Lizzie went too. Not so
many out. Mae, Agnes & Ella served lunch. Went to a basket ball game at
the school house afterward B.O.H.S. & Ft. Atkinson. Double header &
Ft. beat both boys & girls. Lizzie & I rode home with the kids.
Sat. Sept. 29
Rained off & on all day. Was quite cool. Mon & the boys picked up a
jag of corn in A.M. J. C. McArthur came about 10:30 A.M. demonstrating the Thor
washing machine & Mon bought me one ($99.50). Mr. M. stayed until after
dinner. We went up town in eve. Went up home a few minutes.

Nice day but cool. Harry Q. was here awhile in A.M. We went down to Dad P's.
for dinner. All the boys & girls were there. Had a nice dinner. Got home
about 5.

Nice bright day but windy & cool. Mon cut corn for Don B. We had our cattle
T.B. tested this A.M.

Dandy day again. Mon cut corn for Don.
Wed. Oct. 3
Damp, cold day. Mon had such a cold he didn't go over to Don's in
A.M. but he went in P.M. & finished about 4:30. Grace B. called here about
11 P.M. that Sam Richard's had passed away very suddenly.
Thurs. Oct. 4
Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. & was very nice. Mon helped
me wash with the new machine in A.M. Like it just fine. A lot different than
rubbing on the board. In P.M. Mon picked up some corn & then cut some too.
We went up town a little while in eve. Dr. K. was here again today too see about
the cattle & we had 3 reacters. "Queen" a heifer & a calf.
Fri. Oct. 5
Nice day but pretty windy. Mon cut corn all day. Christ M. shocked for him.
B.O.H.S. played basketball at Ossian this P.M. Arthur went too as score keeper.
Boys won & girls lost. Arthur got home about 6:30. Ed D. was here awhile
in eve.
Sat. Oct. 6
Nice day, but terribly windy. Mon & the boys picked up some corn early in
A.M. Dr. Reide was here about 9:30 A.M. too see about the pigs. They were not
very well. Mon cut a little corn in A.M. & some in P.M. but it was so windy
he quit cutting & helped shock. Christ was here & shocked in P.M. They
done up the chores early & we went up town. The M.E. L.A.S. had a chicken
supper in the church basement in eve & Arthur & Maxine waited on the
table. M. went with us. I went up there for supper. Large crowd out. We got
home about 11:30.
Sun. Oct. 7
Dandy day. We went up home & spent the day. Tomorrow is the folks Wedding
Anniversary & all of us kids were home. Ruth, Frances & Betty (?Hagen?)
came up too. We sure had a good time & a good dinner. Ruth Coltie came on
the Bus at noon. Ruth & Frances & Betty were down here a few minutes
as they went home but didn't stay long. Walt Darrington died this A.M.

Nice day. Quite warm. Mon finished cutting the big piece of corn in A.M. &
helped Jack shred in P.M. We went up town a while in eve. Dean & I got our
hair cut.
Tues. Oct. 9
Dandy nice day. Rather windy. Mon finished cutting corn about 3 P.M. then helped
Christ. Christ shocked corn. We went up town awhile in eve. Arthur & I went
up to Isa's a few minutes. Arthur got papa's car so we would have
a car too go to the funeral with. He & I went up to the Pavilion awhile.
We got home about 10:30 & Mon & Dean came with our car a little later.
Wed. Oct. 10
Dandy day. Mon & Christ finished tying up the shocks in A.M. Mon, mama &
I went to Walt's funeral or rather just to the house. There was such a
crowd when we got to the church we didn't go in. Mon drove papa's
car & then we drove it home. Sen. Benson was in B.O. just as we came home
so we both met him. Quite a few Winn. Co. candidates for Co. offices were there
too. Kind of a Republican rally.
Thurs. Oct. 11
Beautiful day. Pretty warm. Mon went up to Christ's early in A.M. &
oiled his windmill. I washed. B.O.H.S. played Basket Ball at Ridgeway this P.M.
Arthur went with Ole's. B.O. got beat. Mon dug some potatoes today. They
are sure nice.
Fri. Oct. 12
Beautiful day. Pretty warm & dusty. Mon & Christ dug potatoes until
about 3:30 P.M. & then they picked up. Got about 38 bu. dug today. We went
up town in eve. Took papa's car home & took some of their potatoes.
Christ went along too. Papa came home tonite from his work.
Sat. Oct. 13
Beautiful day. A little cooler. Mon helped Mr. Chase shred all day. Papa &
mama came down early in A.M. & stayed all day. Christ was here in A.M. &
he & papa dug potatoes. Mama helped me in the house. Christ had too go home
at noon so Arthur helped papa finish digging the potatoes & mama & Dean
picked up. They got thro' about 4 P.M. & went home. Sure some dandy
bunch of potatoes. The folks got half of them. The boys picked up a load of
corn in A.M. Mon, Dean & I went to B.O. in eve. Quite a few in town. Christ
rode home with us. Merlin Cassel was here quite a bit of the day.

Dandy day. Merlin C. was here until about 11. We went up home for dinner. Uncle
Aaron was there too. Mon & papa went to Asa Lange's funeral in P.M.
Ad was over to mama's in P.M. Papa came down after the funeral & got
the rest of his potatoes. Little daughter born to Richard & Doris Blaess
tonite.
Mon. Oct. 15
Dandy day. Rather windy. Mon shredded at Chase's in A.M. & then in
P.M. Mama, Isa, Mon & I went to Decorah. Got back in time to come home with
the kids.
Tues. Oct. 16
Terribly windy, dusty day. Mon went with the kids in A.M. & bro't
mama back with him. We tried too clean up the house but the dust was so bad
we couldn't do much. Mama didn't feel very good either. Mon finished
digging the potatoes in the garden, got a jag of corn & did a number of
different things. He took mama home when he went after the kids in P.M.
Wed. Oct. 17
Rather gloomy, cold day. Mon shredded at Krumm's all day. Arthur went
up after mama before he went too school this A.M. & took her home after
he got home from school. We did a big washing, dressed chickens, baked &
cleaned up the house. Pearl & Verna were over all P.M. Pearl helped us all
the time.
Thurs. Oct. 18
Not such a nice day. Cloudy & cool. Mon shredded at Ole's. Arthur
went up early in A.M. & got mama. Leonard bro't Olive over on his
way to school & came & got her after school. I had Club today. About
21 members here. They had a Shower for me. Sure got nice things. Pearl was over
too. Arthur took mama home about 5.
Fri. Oct. 19
Cool & gloomy most of the day. Sun shone a little while in A.M. Mon &
I husked the popcorn in A.M. He picked up corn in P.M. & I ironed &
patched. B.O.H.S. played Ridgeway at B.O. this P.M. B.O. boys won & girls
lost. Richard Blaess' baby died this P.M. about 3:30. Started raining
about 4:30 & rained quite hard sometimes from then on. Rained very hard
in eve & the thunder & lightning was bad too.
Sat. Oct. 20
Rainy & cloudy early in A.M. but cleared off later in A.M. & was nice
until about 4. P.M. it clouded up & rained some again. Sprinkled off &
on the rest of the P.M. & eve. Got pretty cool in eve. We went up home in
A.M. & had dinner. In P.M. papa, Arthur, Isa , Loyal & I went to Decorah.
Large crowd in town. Got back to B.O. about 4. Came home about 5. Went back
to B.O. in eve. Had our first oysters of the season for supper. 20¢ per

Dandy nice day. Audry, Harold & Delores were here awhile in P.M. Mon, Dean
& I went up to Geo's. late in P.M. too see Vera. She has infection
of the kidneys.
Mon. Oct. 22
Dusty day. Nice & warm. Mon shredded at Lovliens all day. I did a little
of everything. We went up town a few minutes in eve. Milo Noecker & Alice
Bergman were married this A.M.
Tues. Oct. 23
Dandy warm day. Mon shredded at Jack's. Arthur went up & got mama
before he went to school. We had a little baby boy born about noon, but he was
born dead. Mon was home & he went over & got Lizzie too. Dr. Fritchen
was here. He sure is good. Mon & Arthur went up town in eve and did it ever
rain. Just poured & the thunder & lightning were so bad. They were just
soaked when they got home, the car leaked so. Mama is staying for a few days.
Howard & Pearl were over a few minutes in eve.

Not very nice in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. & was nice. Mon picked up
corn in P.M. awhile. Pearl was over awhile in P.M. & Dad P. was here a few
minutes in eve.
Thurs. Oct. 25
Beautiful day. Mon went & got Gertie Barth in A.M., when the kids went to
school, to help here awhile. Pearl came over in A.M. & helped wash. They
had a big washing too. Gertie ironed in P.M. & mama was baking for shredders.
Lizzie was over a few minutes in P.M. Mon went to Decorah in P.M. & got
meat for shredders. Tom Dawley picked up corn here all day. Aunt Till &
Lawrence were here in eve a little while. I got a card from the Joan of Arc.
Fri. Oct. 26
Dandy nice day. We shredded here today. The tractor didn't work good in
A.M. so they didn't get much done but they sure worked in P.M. Ed. D's
shredder & Geo's tractor. Pearl came over early in A.M. & helped
all day. Lizzie came over about noon & helped during the dinner rush. They
got thro' about 4:30. Arthur went to Canton after school & got papa
& bro't him down here. Mama went home with papa tonite. B.O.H.S. played
Basket Ball with Ossian at B.O. this P.M. The boys won, but the girls lost.
Wind came up in the nite & blew hard.
Sat. Oct. 27
Windy, cold day. Arthur took Mon to B.O. early in A.M. to shred at Koenig's
& bro't mama down with him. Papa, Isa & the boys came down about
noon & stayed until about 4. Papa & the boys gathered in the stuff from
the garden in P.M. Mon got home about 4. They didn't shred, the tractor
didn't work. Tom D. picked up corn here today. Gertie went home after
supper. Arthur & Dean went up town in eve & mama went home with them.
The Joan of Arc had their oyster supper tonite. They sent me some oysters by
the boys.

Cold, cloudy, windy day. Mama & papa came down about 9 A.M. Papa went home
about 2:30 & mama stayed all nite. Olive & Leonard were up & spent
the P.M. Mae W. & Audry were here awhile in P.M. too. Lawrence bro't
Gertie back in eve.

Nice day but quite windy. Mon shredded at Koenigs. He rode up & back with
Happy. Mama & Gertie washed & ironed & did a lot of things. Arthur
took mama home after school. Gilbert was here a few minutes in eve.
Tues. Oct. 30
Dandy nice day, but cool. Mon shredded at Gilbert's. Lawrence & Aunt
Till came up about 1:30 P.M. & Gertie went home with them. Quite a relief.
Agnes & Stella R. were here a few minutes in P.M. Gladys & Ole were
down & spent the eve. Papa bro't mama down early in A.M. to stay awhile.
Wed. Oct. 31
Cold, gloomy, windy day. Mon shredded at Ray H's & didn't get
home until about 7. B.O.H.S. played Basket Ball at the Ft. in P.M. & both
teams lost. The kids didn't get home until about 6:30. They had their
Freshman Initiation & Hallowe'en party at the M.E. Church basement
in eve. Arthur & Maxine went about 7:30. I sat up awhile in A.M. & again
in P.M. They hauled me out to the supper table in the big chair.

Nice day but cool. Mon shredded at Ray's most of the day. He got home
about 4. I was up & dressed all day.
Fri. Nov. 2
Cold, windy day. Mon cut some corn for Howard today. He finished about 4. He
took mama home, too stay all nite, after Arthur got home from school. Big shower
in the B.O. Hall in eve for Milo & Alice Noecker. Started raining some time
late in the nite.

Rained all day & was cool. Didn't do much of anything. Mon went up
home early in A.M. & got mama.

Quite a nice day but cloudy part of the time. Mon & Arthur went to B.O.
in A.M. & papa came home with them. Mon & papa went down to see Josie
Lange a few minutes after dinner. Happy was here a little while in P.M. &
so was Leonard W. The boys went hunting in P.M. Arthur took papa home about
4:30. Mon went over to Howard's awhile in eve.

Dandy nice day. We did a big washing for mama & our washing & mama did
both ironings. Jack got his foot in the fence & got it cut pretty bad. Dean
& Mon worked with him quite a while. Arthur did other chores & went
to B.O. He & Dean went to Bluffton a minute after supper. We got ½
bu. of rhutabaga's from Albert Emery for .50¢ & 1 gal. of sorghum
from Floyd B. for .75¢.
Tues. Nov. 6
Election day & a dandy day. Mon went with Arthur when he went to school
& he didn't get back until about 2:30. We got part of the returns
from our T.B. cattle $31.09. Maxine had to go to the dentist this A.M. so she
drove their car & then Arthur rode home with her this P.M. Mon & the
boys went up town in eve.
Wed. Nov. 7
Dandy day. Quite warm. Clifford Mc. helped Mon stack fodder today. Isadore &
Ruth P. came just before dinner & they stayed until about 4. Mama went home
with them to stay. Am going to get along alone now.

Dandy nice day. Clifford helped Mon again today. Dad P. was here for dinner.
Mon, Dean & I went up town in eve. I went up home. Wilma & the kids
were there.

home for dinner. Arthur & Marie were there for dinner too. No school in
High this P.M. on account of Rev. Welfsburg's funeral at Decorah at 2
P.M. Papa fell & hurt himself yesterday & Arthur took him to Dr. Fritchen
this P.M. He had some ribs broken so Dr. taped up up. I went to Club at Valeda's
with Inez W. Not so many out but we had a nice lunch & a nice time. Arthur
waited & I rode home with him & Maxine tonite.

Cloudy, misty, gloomy day. Not cold though. The men did quite a few odd jobs.
We went up town in eve. I went up home a few minutes. It rained hard just after
we got home & kept it up most of the nite I guess. Christ rode home from
town with us.
Sun. Nov. 18
Not such a nice day. Was quite nice for a while in P.M. though. Ray Mc. came
over early in A.M. He & Dean went hunting in A.M. & again in P.M. Mon
& Arthur went hunting in P.M. Howard was here awhile in A.M. & then
he & Mon went hunting.
Mon. Nov. 19
Misty, cloudy day. Quite warm. Rained hard about noon. Some thunder & lightning
too. Dave was over awhile in P.M. Rained hard in eve & about all nite I
guess. Mrs. Brittendahl died about 12 P.M.
Tues. Nov. 20
Misty & cloudy in A.M. Rained hard some times. Brightened up some late in
P.M. & was nice in eve. Howard was over in P.M. Little daughter born to
Ethel & Frank Reed today.
Wed. Nov. 21
Rainy, nasty day. Rained hard in P.M. Mon went over to Dave's about noon
& got their car & them & then we went to B.O. Lizzie & I went
to the L.L.A.S. Sale & Dinner. They sure had a grand dinner & nice things
too sell. Quite a crowd out to in spite of the bad weather. Mon, papa &
Dave went to Decorah. Lizzie & I came home with the kids from school &
Mon & Dave came shortly after. The rain turned to snow in the nite.
Thurs. Nov. 22
Regular blizzard until about 2 P.M. it brightened up & got colder &
froze some. I went too town with the kids. Went up home for dinner & then
mama & I went to Mrs. Brittendahl's funeral. Large crowd out. Arthur
S., Dorothy Reid, Rev. Prust, the M.E. minister, & I sang. Mrs. Prust played.
We sang, "Rock of Ages" "No Night There", & "It
Is Well With My Soul." I came home with the kids. Gerthrude Wilson &
Raphael Carolan were married this P.M.
Fri. Nov. 23
Quite a nice day. Much warmer. Thawed quite a lot in P.M. We washed today &
had a big one but the clothes didn't dry very good.
Sat. Nov. 24
Nice most of the day but rather cool. Clouded up late in P.M. & was cloudy
all nite. We went to B.O. a little after 10 A.M. & Mon stayed there &
Arthur, Dean, Ralph Greenslade & I went to Decorah. Arthur & Ralph went
up to Luther to football games between Cedar Falls & Luther. C.F. won in
A.M. & it was a tie in P.M. Billie Lange was there. He is going too school
at C.F. Dean & I went to the movies. I went to "The Girl of the Limberlist".
It sure was good. Dean went to the Lyric. Lots in Decorah from B.O. We got back
to B.O. about 5:30 P.M. & had to put chains on to come home. Got home about
6:15.
Sun. Nov. 25
Nice some times & cloudy part of the time. Rather windy & cool. Dean
was over to Howards in A.M. & again in P.M. & went hunting with him.
Pearl & Verna were over a few minutes in P.M. Harry Q. was over in eve &
we played cards until about 12. It snowed in the nite. Dale & Arland A.
were here in P.M. awhile.
Mon. Nov. 26
Damp, nasty day. Didn't do much of anything.
Tues. Nov. 27
Cloudy, damp day. Mon helped Jack W. saw wood in A.M. Rained in eve & turned
into snow in the nite.
Wed. Nov. 28
Regular blizzard early in A.M. Brightened up later in A.M. & the sun shone
a few minutes, but it clouded up again & was a dark day. The kids walked
too school. Mon & I went after them in P.M. I went up home a minute.
Thurs. Nov. 29
Thanksgiving Day. Not very nice day. Cloudy & dark. We went up home &
spent the day. Claudes, Isa & the boys, Aunt Lissa, Mettie, Aunt Till &
Uncle Aaron were there too. Had a good dinner & a fine time. Got home about
5. Not very nice roads.
Fri. Nov. 30
Regular blizzard, but not so cold. Snowed & blowed all day. Some terrible
drifts around here. Drifts most everywhere. Didn't do much of anything.
Sat. Dec. 1
Quite a nice day. Not so cold. We washed in A.M. Mon went to B.O. in P.M. with
Howard. They took the team & sled & had to shovel some too get thro'.
I ironed some in P.M.
Sun. Dec. 2
Quite nice in A.M. but clouded up late in P.M. & got colder. We went up
home for dinner. Sure some snow (in some places). Snow fence isn't all
up yet so there is plenty of snow. Mon got the cream cans. He is going to gather
cream for Walt for awhile. Snowed & blowed again in the nite.
Mon. Dec. 3
It was snowing nice when we got up. Everything white & pretty. Quite warm
& the snow so wet & heavy. Rained some in A.M. too. Got colder in P.M.
& was rather a blizzard for awhile late in P.M. & eve. We shipped 7
head of cattle today so neither of the boys could go too school. They had to
help drive the cattle. Lovliens & Gilbertsons shipped too so they drove
them all up to Merle's & trucked them from there to Prosper. Arthur
rode Nell & Dean & Mon walked. Arthur got back about 12:30 & Dean
about 2:30. Mon had to go to Prosper & help load & it was 10:30 before
he got home. Our mail man came today, the first time since last Wed.
Tues. Dec. 4
Dandy day, but the wind was cold. The boys went to school. Arthur didn't
come home tonite. Mon went on the cream route & it was 5:30 when he got
home.
Wed. Dec. 5
Snowed almost all day. Mon took the cream to B.O. this A.M. & I went along
up home. Floyd B. rode to B.O. with us & then he went to Decorah. We got
home about 2:30. Got quite a little colder in P.M. Arthur is going too stay
up home the rest of the school week.
Thurs. Dec. 6
Cold, cloudy early in A.M. but cleared off about noon & was quite nice the
rest of the day but cold. Mon & Howard went to B.O. in A.M. & then Mon
got papa's car & took Howard to Cresco. They got home about 5. M.E.L.A.S.
had their Sale & Dinner today but it was so cold I didn't go.
Fri. Dec. 7
Nice cold day. We washed but the clothes didn't dry very good. Howard
was over awhile in P.M. Arthur came home tonite.
Sat. Dec. 8
Cool again today. We went up home in A.M. Got the returns from our cattle we
shipped & took papa's car in P.M. & went to Decorah. Albert E.
& Paul Wolfsburg rode to D. with us & Albert & Uncle Marion rode
home with us. The boys got some new clothes & I got new shoes ($4.50). We
got home about 6. Rather cold when we got home. We got $134.50 for the cattle.
Sun. Dec. 9
Cold day. Didn't do much of anything. Dean went down to Gilbertson's
in P.M. on his skis.
Mon. Dec. 10
Pretty cold day. Mon went on the cream route. He got back about 5:15.
Tues. Dec. 11
Chilly day. Mon took the cream to B.O. in A.M. & I went along up home. We
waited until school was out & Arthur came home with us.
Wed. Dec. 12
Beautiful day. Nice & Warm. Thawed quite a lot. I washed. Mon did quite
a few things. He went up to Geo's a few minutes in A.M. They sold Grandma
Price's place in P.M. Uncle Jim got it for $35 per acre. Ed D. was here
for supper.
Thurs. Dec. 13
Dandy nice day. A little cooler but it thawed quite a little too. We went to
B.O. in A.M. up home for dinner. I went to Club at Elsie S's. in P.M.
Quite a few out. Had a swell lunch. We didn't get home until about 5:30.
Dean had the chores almost all done. We had supper & they milked & then
we went back to B.O. to the Program & Operetta ("Boy Bandits")
given by the B.O.H.S. at the Hall. It was just fine. They had a good sized crowd
too. We got home about 10:30. Arthur didn't come home tonite.
Fri. Dec. 14
Not such a nice day but not too bad. Mon did a little of everything. So did
I. Arthur came home tonite.
Sat. Dec. 15
Quite a warm day but cloudy. Rained some in P.M. Thawed a lot. We sold our hogs
& Fred W. & Ole helped Mon haul them. 23 of them weighed 5530 lbs. @
$5. 35 per cwt & 1 weighed 190 lbs. @ $5.00 per cwt & 1 veal calf 110
lbs. @ $3.85 brought $309.20. We went up town in eve awhile. Dean & I went
up home a few minutes. We got home about 10:30.
Sun. Dec. 16
Cloudy day but not so cold. Ray Mc. & Gordon Haugen came down in A.M. &
they & Dean took the team & went down on the river after a Xmas tree
for the school house & one for Gordon. They got back here about 1 &
were here for dinner. Dean took Gordon home about 4 & Ray went home on his
ski's.
Mon. Dec. 17
Quite a nice day. Mon went gathering cream. He got home a little after four.
He went over to Howard's in eve. They shredded at Gilbertson's today
& Tom D. went for Mon.
Tues. Dec. 18
Not such a cold day but cloudy & misty. The boys didn't go too school.
We went up home in A.M. & got papa's car & went to Decorah. Papa
& Isa went too. Spent some more money got a new hat (.98) & gloves (1.10)
& every day shoes ($3.95). Arthur got some new clothes too. Mon paid some
bills. I took 6 of my geese down & sold them. They weighed 78 lbs. @ .11¢
per lb. bro't $8.58. We got home about 5:30. They finished shredding
at Gilbertson's today. Christ went for Mon today.
Wed. Dec. 19
Not very nice day. Not too cold though. Mon shredded at Chas. W's. today.
Arthur, Mon & I went over to Don's in eve awhile. Dean stopped at
Howard's.
Thurs. Dec. 20
Not so cold but not bright either. Started to snow about 2 P.M. & kept it
up the rest of the P.M. & eve. Mon shredded at Chas. W's. again today.
I washed & ironed. Arthur didn't come home tonite.
Fri. Dec. 21
Rather cold cloudy day. Mon went to B.O. in A.M. & met the Prosper truck
there & got some coal. Arthur came home with him. I went to Dean's
school in P.M. to their Xmas program. It was good. Quite a few people there.
The schools are out for the Xmas vacation now.
Sat. Dec. 22
Rather a snowy blustery day & got pretty much so late in P.M. Regular blizzard
then got colder too in eve. We went up home in A.M. Took a goose up there &
dressed it. It weighed 12 ½ lbs. after the feathers were off. We got
home about 6. Dean didn't come home tonite. He stayed at mama's.
Sun. Dec. 23
Pretty cold day, but nice & bright. We made candy all day. Dean came home
about 4. Howard was over a few minutes late in P.M. & we were over there
in eve.
Mon. Dec. 24
Rather a cold day. Mon went on the cream route. He got home about 4. The boys
& I did a little of everything. We went to B.O. in eve with Fred & Ede
W. Warmer this eve. I went to the Xmas Program at the M.E. Church. Sang in the
choir. Large crowd out & it was good. We got home about 11.
Tues. Dec. 25
Quite warm day until about 4 P.M. the wind switched around to the west &
then the north & it sure blew & was cold. Snowed quite hard for a while
in P.M. & again in eve. We took our Xmas dinner up home & had it there.
Lesters were down too. Had a nice time. Got home about 4:30. Big dance in B.O.
tonite but didn't go.
Wed. Dec. 26
Pretty cold day. Wind didn't blow quite so hard. Floyd B. was here a few
minutes in A.M. Dean was over to Howard's most of the P.M.
Thurs. Dec. 27
Isa's 35th Birthday. Quite a nice day. Thawed some. Mon hauled hogs for
Lovlien's in A.M. as far as Merle's & they trucked them from
there. He got back home, had dinner & then took the cream up town. Arthur
went with him. Dean was over to Gust's most of the day. We had our first
mail since Monday.

a calf.
Sat. Dec. 29
Pretty cold day but bright. Arthur & I washed in A.M. & we all went
to B.O. in P.M. Went up home awhile. Christ went to town with us. Dave was over
awhile in eve.

Dandy nice bright day. Rather cool though. Dean was over to Howard's most
of the day. Mon & I went up to Gust's a little while in P.M.
