Mon. Jan. 1
Quite a nice day. Not cold. Sun shone some. Dean's, Olive, Claude &
Leonard were here for dinner. Arthur's road was filled up so they couldn't
get out.
Tues. Jan. 2
Not too nice a day. Snowed off & on most of the day & the snow blew
& drifted some. Didn't do much of anything. No Show tonite. Pavement
very slippery down south so he couldn't get here. Had 2 letters from Isa
today.
Wed. Jan. 3
Not too nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. I washed &
ironed. Linda was here for dinner. Dean was fixing his car at Lloyd's
& she came up from down town with Mon. Arthur came up after dinner &
got Mon & he was down there all P.M. helping him get pigs sorted & loaded.
He took a load too Harmony late in P.M. Mon went down town a little while in
eve.
Thurs. Jan. 4
Snowed almost all day but not too much snow fell. Not cold. Went down town in
eve. Had cleared off then & the stars were shining.
Fri. Jan. 5
Snowed hard all day until about 3 P.M. but not too cold. Cleared off then &
was nice the rest of the day & nite. Got colder in eve. Arthur came after
Mon too help him before Mon was up so he got up & went without breakfast
too help him get cattle in the barn too sell. Arthur bro't him back about
10. They bro't the boys up about 11 & left them & they went too
Decorah. They got back a little after 4. We went too the Dance in eve. Not very
many out & a rather dead crowd. Got home about 12:30.
Sat. Jan. 6
Nice bright day. Mon went too Prosper about 9:30 & then we went too Decorah
about 11. Lizzie went with us. Got my hair fixed. Got home about 3. Went down
too Dean's a few minutes about 4. Didn't go down town in eve. Got
much colder in eve.
Sun. Jan. 7
About 30º below this morn but warmed up some. Nice day but cold. I went
too church in A.M. We were alone all day & eve.
Mon. Jan. 8
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Dean's went too Leonard Gunderson's
Sale & left Linda here. Arthur's bro't Bill up & left him
all night. They went too Decorah. Left Danny at Krumm's all nite.
Tues. Jan. 9
Dandy nice day. Much warmer. Mon went down town & met the noon bus from
Decorah. Danny came up on it. Arthur's came after the boys then about
11:45 & they stayed for dinner. I went up too Koenig's & too Genevra's
in P.M. Went too the Show "Traveling Saleswoman" (Joan Davis) in
eve. Large crowd out. Ed Arnold's name was called for $40 but he wasn't
there.
Wed. Jan. 10
Very nice early in A.M. but clouded up about 11 & looked quite like some.
Some little snow balls did fall but not many. Some cooler in P.M. Went down
too Arthur's in P.M. with Miriam. Ruth entertained the W.S.C.S. business
meeting. About 15 out. Had a good meeting & a nice lunch. Went down too
Ray Hennings in eve. Everything covered with frost when we came home.
Thurs. Jan. 11
9º below this morn. Nice day. We went too Decorah in A.M. early & Mon
got his driver's license renewed & the car licensed. Olive & I
went down too Edie Reed's in P.M. Went down town in eve.
Fri. Jan. 12
Dandy nice day. Mrs. Mikesh & Mrs. Holt came just as we were going too eat
dinner & as soon as I finished my dinner I went with them too get signer's
too join the Rebecca Lodge we are trying too start. Got Alyse Wicks, Mabel Kimber,
Alberta B. & Dorothea R. Got home about 2:30. Arthur's bro't
the boys for me too keep while they went too Harmony & then Dean bro't
Linda up for awhile. The kiddies sure had a lot of fun. Arthur's came
back from Harmony with a new car (Chev.). They traded in the pick up. We went
down too Dean's a few minutes late in P.M.
Sat. Jan. 13
Dark dreary day. Foggy & damp but not too cold. Went down town in eve.
Sun. Jan. 14
Nice day. It was rather foggy early in A.M. but that soon went away. I went
too church in A.M. We went down too Arthur's about 4:30 & got back
home about 6:30.
Mon. Jan. 15
Not very nice day but still not too bad. Wind blew quite hard from the north
& it snowed a little early in A.M. Snow blowed & drifted some in P.M.
I washed & ironed. Dean came just at noon & then after dinner he &
Mon went too Harmony too see if they couldn't buy Arthur's pick
up but they didn't get it. I went up too Arnold's in eve too a meeting.
Mon went down town. Had a letter from Isa. Cleared off in eve & was very
nice.
Tues. Jan. 16
Quite a nice day with a strong south wind. Dean's bro't Linda up
right after dinner & left her while they went too Decorah. They got back
about 4. Dean bought a pick up at Bradley's & so Mon went down after
they got home & took him too Decorah after it. Went too the Show in eve.
"The Judge Steps Out". Very large crowd out. No one got the $50.
Wed. Jan. 17
Nice day. Mon went down too Arthur's & Deans in A.M. & helped
Arthur sort hogs & Dean sack up grain too take too town too have ground.
Thurs. Jan. 18
Nice day. Went up too the church about 10:30 A.M. & helped the girls get
dinner. Inez W. Rosella H., Pearl D. & Mrs. G. entertained the W.S.C.S.
Large crowd out. Took in $74.25. Some of the ladies tied & bound a quilt
for Mrs. Knowlton in P.M. Got home about 5. Lester & Isa came just after
we had supper. Went down town awhile in eve. Dean butchered a beef in P.M.
Fri. Jan. 19
Quite a nice day. We went down too Dean's & Arthur's awhile
in A.M. Dean was here awhile at noon. We went too Decorah for awhile rather
late in P.M. Went too the dance in eve. Large crowd out. Dewey Golberg &
the 2 Foltz boys played. They were not as good as the Skaim boys. Got home about
1:30.
Sat. Jan. 20
Not too nice a day. Snowed some early in A.M. & the wind blew hard from
the north all day & most of the nite. Quite a lot colder. We went down too
Dean's in P.M. Isa & I stayed there & wrapped up meat for the
deep freeze & Lester & Henry went too Bluffton too see Uncle Aaron.
He moved down there a week ago. We went over too Claudes for supper. Played
cards awhile after supper.
Sun. Jan. 21
10º below early but warmed up some during the day & was a nice day.
Claude's were over for supper & we played cards in eve.
Mon. Jan. 22
10º above with a strong south wind. Not very nice day. Dark but not too
cold. Lester & Isa went home about 9:30. We went too Decorah in P.M. Took
the Income papers down & I got my hair fixed. Went up too Zoa's in
eve too the Bible Study.
Tues. Jan. 23
About zero this morn. Nice day but colder. Quite a strong north wind. I washed
& ironed. Arthur was here a few minutes after dinner & Mon went down
too help him a little while. Went too the Show in eve. Very large crowd out.
Alvin Darling won the $50.
Wed. Jan. 24
Mon's Birthday. 10º below. Didn't warm up too much all day
with quite a strong wind from the north. Dean's were here a few minutes
after dinner on their way up to Si's. Ruth & the boys came up in P.M.
& Olive was over & we made graham cracker roll for my Club. Mon went
down town awhile in eve. Cold nite but the wind went down in the nite.
Thurs. Jan. 25
About 20º below this morn. Warmed up some during the day & was a nice
day. Olive was over in P.M. & helped me some. Mon went down town awhile
in eve.
Fri. Jan. 26
About zero. Not very nice day. Snowy & got too be quite a blizzard late
in P.M. & eve but not too much snow fell. Olive was over & helped me
in A.M. awhile. I had club in P.M. About 30 women & quite a few children.
Ruth didn't get here until rather late & then Arthur came after here
about 5:30.
Sat. Jan. 27
4º below. Nice day. We went too Decorah about 10 & was home again about
12:45. Went down town in eve. It was snowing & blowing when we came home.
Sun. Jan. 28
20º below & very windy. Wind from the north & west. Sun shone most
of the time but it surely was cold. Snow drifted all day. Wind went down some
in the nite. Cold nite. We were alone all day.
Mon. Jan. 29
30º below this morn. Cold but bright day. Wind didn't blow as hard
as yesterday but did blow some. Didn't warm up too much all day. Olive
& Claude were here a little while at supper time & we planned a trip
too Phoenix Ariz. Cold nite but still.
Tues. Jan. 30
50º below this morn. Warmed up too zero. Didn't do much. Went too
the Show in eve "And Baby Makes Three". It was good. Not too large
a crowd out, too cold. Rose Brown's name was called for $20 but she wasn't
there.
Wed. Jan.31
10º below this morn. Snowed off & on all day but not too much. Sun
shone a little in P.M. Mon had Lloyd D. pull the car & get it started this
A.M. & we went too Decorah about 11:15. Mon got a hair cut & I got a
permanent. Olive was down & she got her hair cut & a permanent at Mabel's
too. She rode home from town with us. Dean's were here awhile in eve &
then Mon went down town a while.
Thurs. Feb. 1
28 below at 6:30. Quite a nice day. We left B.O. with Claude & Olive in
their car about 9:20 for Phoenix Ariz. Just got as far as Lloyd's &
the car was froze up so we pulled in there & got it thawed out so it was
about 10 when we left B.O. Stopped at Grundy Center for dinner. Drove on too
Lamoni where we stopped (about 6:30) for the nite. Stayed at Dr. Hill's.
Went up town for supper & then too bed. Not nearly so much snow down here
as at home but the ground is well covered with snow. 6 below when we went out
too supper.
Fri. Feb. 2
10º below at Lamoni. Nice day. Wind in the south & it did warm up some.
Snow on the ground all the way today. Went across the corner of Missouri too
Kansas City Kan. & then down across the State. Saw quite a lot of different
country. Some nice & some not so nice. Got into Nowata Oklahoma about 6:30.
Got a nice room at the Campbell Hotel & then went out & had a good supper.
Had a good nights sleep.
Sat. Feb. 3
Warmer this morning but still chilly. Left Nowata about 7:55 & then didn't
stop for breakfast until we got too Tulsa. Rode through some pretty rough country
most of the day. So much red soil. Lots of oil wells. Got away from the snow
in Oklahoma in P.M. Got too Shamrock Texas about 6:30. Got a nice cabin at the
Corso Road Motel, then went out & had a good supper. Walked down too the
town & back after supper. About a mile. Got Mon a shirt down town.
Sun. Feb. 4
Warmer this morning but still chilly. Left Shamrock Texas at 8:45 this morning.
Drove all day until about 5:45. Changed time at Tucumcari N.M. so we gained
1 hr. Went over a couple of rather high passes. Saw some country that I wouldn't
give much for. Run into snow again at Amarillo & there was more or less
of it all the way too Albuquerque N.M. Some places quite a lot. We came on from
Albuquerque down too Belen where we arrived at about 5:45 & got a nice double
cabin at a Motel then went up town for supper. Came back too the cabin &
sat up & talked a while.
Mon. Feb. 5
Dandy nice day. Real cool when we left Belen at 7:30 A.M. Had breakfast at Socorro
& they had the oil changed in the car. Started climbing the mountains just
out of there & were climbing up & going down all day. Some sharp turns
in places & rather rather sharp drop offs too. Got too Globe Ariz. about
5:30 & got a double cabin at the J.P. court. Went out too supper. Had too
walk about 6 blocks & back so had a good long walk. Saw our first green
grass & some flowers tonight. Crossed the Continental Divide about 11:20
A.M. at Pie Town. Elevation 8300 ft.
Tues. Feb. 6
Dandy nice day. Left Globe about 7:30 & got out aways up the mt. & then
started down Devils Canyon & about 8 A.M. we were stopped by men who were
working, getting a new road built. We were held up there until 9:30. It wasn't
a very nice road then for about 5 miles. Got into Superior about 10:30 &
had breakfast there & Claude got a hair cut there. Came on too Chandler
& it was a nice trip from there in. Went right on out too the Air Base but
had some trouble locating Marvin. When we did he drove around the base with
us & we watched the planes taking off & landing. He came on back too
Chandler with us & we got a Motel with 2 bedrooms, then went out too supper.
He stayed with us until about 8:30 & then we took him back too the Base.
Saw date palms, mangos & grapefruit growing from Mesa in. Picked an orange
off a tree at the Base. Walked on green grass here in Chandler.
Wed. Feb. 7
Dandy nice day. Just sat around in the sunshine all A.M. Had a lunch at noon
& then went out too the Base & got Marvin about 2. Then he drove around
Mesa awhile & then on up too Phoenix. We walked around there for awhile.
Found the post office & got a Birthday Card there from Arthur's. Came
back too Mesa & had supper & then went too the Show there "Harvey"
& it was sure good. Took Marvin on back too the Base & then on home.
Didn't get back here until after midnight.
Thurs. Feb. 8
My Birthday. Dandy nice day. Sat around in the sun all A.M. Walked down town
for awhile in P.M. & then about 4:30 Claude, Olive & I drove out too
Chandler Heights too see the fruit 3000 acres of oranges & grapefruit. Saw
a lot of fruit. Stopped at the building where they wrap & pack fruit. Went
up town for supper & then went too a Show. Joe E. Brown & Judy Canova
in "Joan of the Ozarks". It was good. Got back about 10:30.
Fri. Feb. 9
Beautiful day. Warmest day yet. Didn't do much of anything, just sat around
& visited. Some of the neighbors were here & visited. We went out after
Marvin about 5 & he came into town & had supper with us & stayed
awhile & then we took him back too the Base.
Sat. Feb. 10
Dandy nice day. Very warm. Left here about 7:30 & went up town & had
breakfast, then out too the Base too the Commencement exercises Air Show was
just wonderful. Had a swell dinner & a good program before dinner when the
boys got their wings 80 of them. Went back too the flying field & spent
part of the P.M. then too the officers Club where we stayed until about 5. Came
back too town & Marvin & Emil Vollmer came back with us. After supper
they took the car back too the Base & we walked around town for awhile.
Watched a television show on the street for awhile. It was good. The boys came
back later in eve. Marvin took Vollmer too Phoenix.
Sun. Feb. 11
Dandy nice day. We left the Cotton Wood [Comets?] at Chandler at 7:55 &
had too take Vollmer's over coat up too Phoenix. He had forgotten it &
left it in the car last night. Stopped at Casa Grande for breakfast & then
at Lordsburg for lunch in P.M. Crossed the Continental Divide at 3:35 P.M. It
was nice & warm too. Had a flat tire about 16 miles from Las Cruces &
got it changed & then just drove that far for today. Got a nice place Neff
Courts where all 5 of us stayed at the same cabin. Had a swell supper too at
the Neff Cafe.
Drove 509 miles.
Mon. Feb. 12
Beautiful day. Nice & warm until about 5 P.M. the wind changed too the north
& got much cooler. We left Las Cruces about 6:05 & got quite a ways
before day light. Drove through mountains until about 9:50 A.M. Had breakfast
at Alamogordo & then dinner at Brownsville [ed. note: Brownfield]
Texas. Drove too Wichita Falls. Got there about 7:30 P.M. & got a cabin
for each of us then went up town a ways & had supper. Came back down too
the cabin, sat around awhile & then went too bed. We stayed at the Oak Court.
Drove 562 miles.
Tues. Feb. 13
Not a very nice day. Much colder. Left Wichita Falls about 7:05 A.M. Started
snowing about 8:30 & snowed off & on all day at times a regular blizzard.
Wind blew hard from the north all day & as we were driving straight north
a good part of the day it was hard driving against the wind & we couldn't
make as good time. Had breakfast at Lawton Texas [ed. note: Oklahoma]
& lunch at Wellington. Got too Emporia Kansas about 6:35 P.M. Got a cabin
at the [Over Lee?] Tourist Court. Went up town for supper & then went to
a Show Lum & Abner in "Home Town". It was good.
Only drove 245 miles today. Too much wind.
Wed. Feb. 14
Not too nice until late in P.M. it brightened up some. Left Emporia Kan. about
7:30. Run into ice at Excelsior Springs Mo. & had ice in places for quite
a ways. At times quite slippery & then other places it had thawed so it
didn't bother the driving. Sure did run into snow at Ft. Atkinson &
from there on home there was plenty. Had breakfast at Williamsburg Kan. &
lunch at Lamoni Iowa & supper at Grundy Center. Got home about 9. The house
was plenty cold but we soon got the 2 fires going & warmed it up some. I
went too bed about 10:30 but Mon didn't go until after 11. We drove 4037
miles on our trip & it sure was a swell trip. Plenty of snow here at home.
Drove 527 miles today.
Thurs. Feb. 15
Very nice day until late in P.M. it clouded up & then started too rain.
Rained quite a bit in the nite & froze. Arthur, Ruth & the boys came
about 11:30 & were here awhile. I went up too the church with them too the
W.S.C.S. dinner. Luella, Iona, Anita & Lucy Snell entertained. Large crowd
out & they had a good dinner. Dean's were there & they came up
here, for awhile, after the dinner. Dean had sold some hogs while we were gone
& bought feed etc. so he & Mon had too get that straightened out. Mon
went too Lodge in eve. Had a letter & a birthday card & handkerchief
from Isa.
Fri. Feb. 16
Not very cold but everything coated with a thick coating of ice. Not too much
travel on the highway. Rained off & on all day. Didn't do much of
anything. Thawed some in the nite.
Sat. Feb. 17
Thawed so the ice on the paving softened up & most all of it was gone by
P.M. Rather a dark day but quite warm. We went too Decorah about noon. Got my
hair fixed. Got home about 5. Went down town in eve & then Arthur's
came & I came up home with them awhile. Went down town again when they went
home & came home when Mon did.
Sun. Feb. 18
Quite a nice day although the sun didn't shine much. We went down too
Dean's awhile early in A.M. & then stopped at Arthur's on our
way home. Olive was over a few minutes in eve.
Mon. Feb. 19
Not so nice in A.M. foggy & dark but it cleared off in P.M. & was nice.
Thawed quite a little. We went down too the Hall about 9:30 & worked almost
all day. Washing the wood work & chairs in the lower hall. Raymond &
Ida Halse & Mrs. Raymond Holt were there in A.M. too. They came up &
had dinner with us. Olive & Muriel T. & Elanor D. were there & helped
in P.M. too. Bess Ward was there all day. I went over too Hilda R's in
eve too Bible Study. Mon went down town.
Tues. Feb. 20
Dark day but not cold. Didn't do much of anything. Went too the Show in
eve. Large crowd out. Miles Wilbur's name was called but he wasn't
there. Good show. Shirley Temple John Agar & Robert Young were the main
characters.
Wed. Feb. 21
Nice bright day. Thawed quite a lot. I washed & ironed. Had a big washing
& ironing too. Arthur was here a few minutes after dinner.
Thurs. Feb. 22
Nice day. Went down too the Hall & cleaned. Took most of the day. Raymond
& Ida & Mrs. Holt were here for dinner again. Got done cleaning there
about 3:30. Quite a few out too help today. Went down town in eve.
Fri. Feb. 23
Quite a nice day. Thawed quite a little again today. Went down too Arthur's
about 9 A.M. & helped Ruth. She entertained Club in P.M. Quite a few out.
Had a nice lunch. Came home about 4 with Dorothea R. Got around & cleaned
up & then went too the Hall about 6:30. The Pres. of the Rebekah Assembly
was here with some of her helpers also the Grand Master & others. They instituted
the Rebekah Lodge here & then initiated new members & installed the
officers. I was put in as N.G. A very large crowd out & every thing was
so nice. People from Decorah, Postville, Padden's were up, Cresco &
Canton. Had a nice lunch too. Got home about 1. 32 went into the Lodge by reinstatement
& by card.
Sat. Feb. 24
Quite a nice day but it rained some in eve. We went down too the Hall in A.M.
& got the M.E. dishes we had, had too use last night & brought them
up here & washed them. Olive came over & helped me do them. Took them
back too the church after dinner & then went too Decorah. I went down town
awhile in eve. Mon went too bed.
Sun. Feb. 25
Rather a dark dreary day but not cold. Started too rain about 4 & kept it
up the rest of P.M. & eve. Ruth bro't Bill up here about 10 A.M. &
then she & Danny went too S.S. & church. Bill & I went over too
Olive's about 11. We were all there for dinner, Arthur's, Deans,
us & Virginia. Had a picnic dinner & a good one.
Mon. Feb. 26
Not too bright a day, but not cold. Did a little of everything & not much
of anything. The Rev. Arnold's, Gladys & Aunt Alice were here in eve.
Supposed to have the Bible Study here but not enough came so we just talked
awhile. Arnold's & Gladys went home about 8:30 but Aunt Alice stayed
on. Florence is gone up too Welcome Minn. & Aunt Alice is staying down there
so she had too wait for Albert too come after her. He & Mon came after while
& we had a lunch & they stayed until about 12.
Tues. Feb. 27
Very nice day. We went down too Dean's about 9:15. Mon helped sort out
hogs too sell. Leonard Dow hauled them. He came just after we had dinner. Dean
went on too Decorah & we came home about 1. Linda's 4th Birthday.
Went too the Show in eve. "Hell Fire". Pretty good. Very large crowd
out. Merlin Barth's name was called so he got half of the "pot"
$25.
Wed. Feb. 28
Heck of a day. All kinds of weather. Blizzard started about 9 A.M. & it
snowed & blowed, rained, thunder & lightning & all kinds you could
imagine. Not too cold though. Didn't do much of any thing. Olive, Claude
& Marvin left about 6:30 A.M. for Waterloo where Claude stopped off too
an odd fellow meeting & then Olive & Marvin went on too Marie's.
They were held up in Waterloo by blizzard & ice until about 4 P.M. &
then they all went on too Marie's.
Thurs. Mar. 1
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Ruth bro't the boys up & left them
here in P.M. & she went too Marlyn K's too their sewing circle. Went
down town in eve. Claude's came home about 4 P.M.
Fri. Mar. 2
Another heck of a day again. Thunder, lightning, rain, hail & snow with
a strong wind. We went down home after dinner & got some cream & eggs.
The kids were not at home so we were not gone long. Olive, Claude & Marvin
were over for supper. We went down too the Hall about 9 but no one was there
for the dance so we came right back home. Nasty nite.
Sat. Mar. 3
Not too bad in A.M. Rather dark & dreary but we sure had a storm in P.M.
Rained & sleet & snow again. Didn't do much of anything. Didn't
even go down town in eve. Got colder in the nite & froze so it was very
slippery getting around but they kept the paving cleaned off so it wasn't
bad.
Sun. Mar. 4
Nice bright day but too slippery too get out of the house, hardly. We were alone
all day & eve.
Mon. Mar. 5
Nice day. Thawed quite a little. Took off a lot of the ice. I washed & ironed.
Went too a dance at the hall in eve. Too much storms on Friday nights so they
had it tonight. Good crowd & a good time. Skaim boys played. Had a letter
from Isa.
Gas tank went dry this A.M.
Tues. Mar. 6
Rather cloudy early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. Went too the
Show in eve. Abbott & Costello in "Meet the Killer". It was
sure funny. Earl Ward got the $35. Large crowd out. Mon didn't go down
town in eve. Claude & Olive took Marvin too La Crosse early this A.M. &
he took a plane from there too Columbia S. Car. His new place. Cool nite.
Wed. Mar. 7
Nice day but cooler. Mon went too Arthur's about 9 too help him. I went
too Lutheran L.A.S. dinner. Large crowd & a swell dinner. Audry L., Maude
J., Pearl Rosendahl & Mrs. Conrad Vick entertained. Olive & I went too
call on Mrs. Koenig & also stopped at "Berts" & Josie's.
Genev. wasn't there today.
Thurs. Mar. 8
Windy, chilly day. Sun shone part of the day but it was cold. Went down town
in eve. A bunch of us women went up too the hall after Lodge & practiced
some for the Rebekah Lodge. Darned cold coming home.
Fri. Mar. 9
10º below this morn. Nice bright day. Warmed up some during the day. Mon
went too Arthur's early in A.M. & helped him all day at building a
hog house.
Sat. Mar. 10
Not too bad a day. Warmer. Looked like snow all day but didn't start until
about 4 P.M. & then not too much until eve & then it rained & snowed
both. Regular blizzard at times in eve. Wind blew hard. We went too Decorah
about 9 A.M. Mon got a hair cut & I got mine fixed. We came home about 3
& then we went down too Dean's a little while too get some eggs &
cream. Linda came home with us. Dean came too B.O. after some things so she
rode back with him. Went down town in eve.
Sun. Mar. 11
Not too nice a day & not too bad. Sun shone part of the day & it was
rather blizzardy at times. Started too snow about 6 P.M. & kept it up most
of the nite I guess with the wind blowing so it drifted some. We were alone
all day & eve.
Mon. Mar. 12
Regular blizzard all day & nite. Not too cold though. Went too Lodge in
eve. Our first meeting of the Rebekahs. Quite a few out. Had a lunch afterward.
Quite a lot of snow fell during the day & nite.
Tues. Mar. 13
Blizzard again today. Quite a lot of snow fell. I went up too Ike's &
Aunt Alice's in P.M. Mon didn't go down town in eve.
Wed. Mar. 14
Wind blew quite hard all day. Snow blowed some in A.M. but it started thawing
about 4 A.M. & the snow got too heavy too blow. Thawed quite a little. Arthur
was here a little while in P.M. Olive was over awhile in P.M. too.
Thurs. Mar. 15
Quite a nice day but cooler. Didn't thaw too much. Arthur's bro't
Bill up in eve & left him while they went too Decorah. They came after him
about 11. Mon went too Lodge.
Fri. Mar. 16
Just zero this morn. Warmed up during the day & thawed quite a little. Sun
shone all day. We went down too Dean's in A.M. & got some cream &
eggs. Went to Decorah in P.M. Went too the Dance in eve. Large crowd out. Really
too many for the hall. Had a good time even though it was a large crowd. S.
boys played. Had a letter from Isa.
Sat. Mar. 17
Rather a dark day & cooler. Didn't do much of any thing. Mon went
down town awhile in eve but I didn't go. Too stormy. Started too snow
& blow about 6 P.M. Snow kept up all nite I guess but the wind went down
& it got warmer. About 10 inches of snow fell during the nite.
Sun. Mar. 18
Not very nice day. Snowed & blowed all day. Not too cold. Roads filled up
& I guess the plow couldn't keep it open. The plow did go up in the
eve & a few cars followed it back down. Got colder in the nite & the
wind went down some but it was still blowing.
Mon. Mar. 19
About 2º below this morn. Sun shone most of the day but it was a blustery
cold day. Snow drifted most of the day. The pavement was drifted full up north
of Wright's & the plow went up & cleaned it out for one way traffic
about 8:15. Many cars & trucks piled up behind it. They didn't get
the paving cleaned out only for the one way traffic up there all day as it kept
drifting all day. They cleaned it out better during the nite as it quit drifting.
Olive was over a little while in P.M. Cold nite. Mon didn't go down town
in eve.
Tues. Mar. 20
About 5º below this morn. Nice bright day but cold. Didn't warm up
much all day & the wind blew quite hard all day so it drifted the snow some
more. Hardly any roads cleared out except the paving & that still only one
way in lots of places. Olive & I went down town in P.M. Went over &
visited with Kate R. for awhile. Cold nite.

[20?]º below this morn. Nice bright day & it did warm up some during
the day. Lizzie & Aunt Alice were here awhile in P.M. Some of the roads
got cleared out today as the snow didn't drift.
Thurs. Mar. 22
10º above this morn. Wind around in the south. Warmed up during the day
& was quite warm. Thawed quite a lot. Went down town in eve.
Fri. Mar. 23
Rather dark & cool in A.M. Started too snow about noon & was a regular
blizzard in P.M. & eve. About the worst this winter. Filled up the roads
again that they had got cleaned out. We went down too Dean's early in
A.M. & got some eggs & cream. Didn't stay very long. Linda has
been sick for 2 or 3 days. Gland trouble but she was better this morn. Not very
cold today.
Sat. Mar. 24
Dandy nice day. Thawed some. Florence & Shirley were here most of the A.M.
until 11. They had gone too La Crosse yesterday & the blizzard had filled
up their road by the time they got back so they couldn't get home &
they stayed at Aunt Alice's. The W.S.C.S. had a food sale at Sheley's
store in P.M. & eve. & I was there all P.M. & eve. Just home long
enough too get supper.
Sun. Mar. 25
Quite a nice day. The sun shone almost all day & it thawed quite a little.
I went too church in A.M. Arthur, Ruth & the boys were up awhile in eve.
Mon. Mar. 26
Nice day. Thawed a lot. Ruth brought the boys up about 9:30 & left them
& she went too Decorah. Arthur came up after them about 4. We had a good
time. Went too Lodge in eve. Quite a few out & we had a good meeting. Had
a lunch afterward. Bill Leonhart had a heart attack at Gene McCabe's about
5 P.M.
Tues. Mar. 27
Quite nice early in A.M. but clouded up later & started too rain about noon.
Not too hard then but kept it up all P.M. & nite & sometimes it rained
quite hard. A lot of the snow went during the day & nite. We went too Decorah
about 9:30. I got my hair fixed. Had our dinner down town. Got home about 2.
Went too the Show in eve. "Billy the Kid". It was pretty good. Not
too many out & the money was not claimed.

Another rainy day. Rained most of the day & nite again. Quite a lot of the
snow went again today.
Thurs. Mar. 29
Not very nice day but not too cold. Rained & snowed most of the day but
not too much. Just a dreary day & nite. Went down town a few minutes just
after dinner & then up too Aunt Alice's awhile in P.M. too. Went down
town awhile in eve. Thawed so much now that the bottom is going out of about
all the roads.
Fri. Mar. 30
Not a very nice day. Regular blizzard in A.M. Not quite so bad in P.M. but the
snow still blew some. Not very cold. Roads drifted full again. No Club today
on account of the roads & no dance at nite either for the same reason.
Sat. Mar. 31
Not very nice day. Thawed most of the day & drifted some too. Dean, Iona
& Linda were up most of the P.M. Went down town in eve. It was snowing when
we came home.

Not too nice a day. Snowed & drifted. Sun did shine at times. We were alone
all day & eve. Terrible fire in Decorah this A.M. The Commercial Hotel burned
about 9:30. 3 old men burned too death & the rest of the people just escaped
with their lives.
Mon. Apr. 2
Not too nice a day & not too bad. We went too Decorah in A.M. awhile. Went
down too the hall & put up some plastic curtains in the lodge room. Went
too Lodge in eve. Had some visitors from Decorah. Had a lunch afterward.
Tues. Apr. 3
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. I washed & ironed. Went too the Show in eve.
"Mrs. Mike". It was good but not too big a crowd out. The money
wasn't given away. Had a letter from Isa.
Wed. Apr. 4
Dandy nice day & it thawed a lot again today. Olive was over awhile in A.M.
Dean came about 10 & said they had a big boy. Born about 5 o'clock.
Iona & baby were just fine he said. Linda had gone up too La Verne's
yesterday. We went too Decorah in P.M. & went too the Hospital. Mon didn't
go in. Dean & Lelia got there the same time we did & then Lloyd &
Edna came soon afterward. The nurse held the baby up too the glass in the nursery
so we could see him. He looks like Linda did only he has quite a lot of light
hair. He weighed 7 lbs. & 14 oz. We went down town in eve & I went over
too "Berts" awhile. Baby's name is Thomas Dean.
Thurs. Apr. 5
Dandy nice day. Thawed a lot. I went too Cresco in eve with Dorothea R. too
Lodge. Alberta & Elanore D. went too. Leon & Nellie M., Iona & Joe,
Luella & Raymond went out too. Decorah ladies put on some work. Large crowd
out. Had a good program after Lodge. Had such a nice supper too. Got home about
12.

Rather a dark, damp & dreary day. Rained off & on all day. Dean was
here awhile just after dinner.
Sat. Apr. 7
Rather a dark day. Cool. Snowed & rained some early in A.M. but quit about
10. We went too Decorah about 11. Lizzie went with us. I got my hair fixed.
Went down too the Hospital in P.M. with Arthur & Ruth too see Iona. She
was up & walked with us too the nursery too watch the babies. Went down
town in eve. Dean was here awhile in A.M.
Sun. Apr. 8
Another dark damp day. We were alone all day & nite. Iona & baby came
home from the Hospital this P.M. Talked with her & Linda about 6 P.M.
Mon. Apr. 9
Not very nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. We went down
too Dean's in P.M. too really see Tommie. They said he had been so good
since he had been home. Slept almost all the time we were there. Lloyd &
Edna were there too. We stopped at Arthur's a little while on our way
home. They bro't Bill up here in eve & left him all nite. The rest
of them went too Decorah.
Tues. Apr. 10
Rather a dark day but not too bad. The ground dried up quite a little. We went
down too Dean's a few minutes late in P.M. Went too the Show in eve. "Tycoon".
Pretty good. Large crowd but the money wasn't given out. Arthur &
Ruth came after Bill about 10:30 A.M. They were on their way too her folks for
dinner. Their 50th wedding anniversary. Danny stayed at Krumm's last nite.
Rained hard in the nite.

Rainy dark day. I went up too Zoa's in P.M. too the W.S.C.S. business
meeting. Only 7 of us there. Had a letter from Isa. Little daughter born too
Delores & Howard Quandahl. Her name is Kathleen Renee.
Thurs. Apr. 12
Not very nice day. Rained almost all day & sometimes pretty hard. Snowed
awhile in eve. Went down town in eve. Some of us Rebekah's went up too
the Hall after the Odd Fellow's were done lodge & practiced awhile.
Fri. Apr. 13
Quite a windy dark. Dark & damp most of the time. The sun did shine a little
while in P.M. & then it cleared off in eve. We went too the dance in eve.
Quite a crowd out & a good time. S. boys played.
Sat. Apr. 14
Quite a nice day. Went down too Dean's in A.M. awhile. Linda came home
with us & Dean bro't up his pumping outfit too pump the water out
of the cellar. He didn't stay long & Linda went home with him. We
went too Decorah in P.M. Went down town in eve. Snowed some in the nite.
Sun. Apr. 15
Not very nice day. Dark & snowed lightly off & on all day. Snowed in
the eve until the ground was white. Ruth bro't Danny up here & left
him when she went too church. Dean bro't Linda up after dinner & then
we took Linda & Danny too Mabel too the Show "Bed Time for Bonzo".
They got a kick out of the show. It was pretty good. Took the kiddies home about
5. Went first too Dean's & Arthur's were there so Danny went
home with them. We stayed at Dean's awhile. Had a lunch there.
Mon. Apr. 16
Not too nice a day. Spit snow off & on all day. Mon took me down too May
Christopherson's in P.M. La Verne N. Edna G., & Lelia & Linda
were there too & we planned a shower for Tommy. We took Lelia & Linda
home & stayed a few minutes. Iona went too Harmony this A.M. had a couple
of teeth pulled. Went too Lodge in eve. All but 3 of the members were there.
We took Fern, Howard & Ernest Sheley back into the Lodge. Had a lunch.
Tues. Apr. 17
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon finished pumping the water out of the cellar
this A.M. He took the pump home in P.M. & stayed & split wood for awhile.
Arthur was here a minute in P.M. I went too the Show in eve. It was good &
a large crowd was out. "Pa & Ma Kettle Go too Town". The money
was not given out.
Wed. Apr. 18
Not too nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was quite a nice day. Mon was
down at Dean's for awhile in A.M. splitting wood & then he helped
Arthur fence in P.M.
Thurs. Apr. 19
Dandy nice day with rather a strong wind that was kind of chilly. Mon went down
too Deans for awhile in A.M. He came home a little after 10 & bro't
Linda, Danny & Bill. Ruth entertained W.S.C.S. today so we kept the boys.
Took them up too the church for her too care for about 2:30 & then we went
down too Dean's. He had taken a hog too town & had it butchered &
cut up so we went down & wrapped our meat for the deep freeze & Mon
ground the lard with the electric grinder. Didn't get done until about
6 so we stayed there for supper & until the dishes were done. Tommie woke
up just before we came home so we weighed him 7½ lbs. & I fed him.
He is such a good baby. Went down town in eve.
Fri. Apr. 20
Quite a nice day. Mon was at Arthur's all day helping with the fence.
I tried out lard in A.M. & worked at the yard in P.M. Rained quite hard
in the nite.
Sat. Apr. 21
Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day & some times quite hard.
We went too Decorah about 9:30. Mon got a haircut. He had too wait until after
12 too get in for it though. We came home about 3. Went down town in eve.
Sun. Apr. 22
Quite a nice day but quite windy. I went too church in A.M.
Mon. Apr. 23
Very nice until about 1:30 P.M. it clouded up & started too rain. Rained
quite a little too. I washed & ironed. Mon was at Dean's in A.M. splitting
wood. He came home for dinner & then went too help Arthur in P.M. but he
came home when it rained. Dean's brot Tommie up here about 10:30 &
left him & they went too La Crosse. They got back about 6:30. Tommie didn't
wake up until nearly 2. He was awake for a couple of hours & then went back
too sleep & didn't wake up again even when they bundled him up too
go home. I went too Canton too Lodge in eve with Lloyd & Elanore. Joe, Iona,
Leon, Nellie & Dorothea R. were up too. Had a nice time & a good lunch.
Got home a little after 10.
Tues. Apr. 24
Not very nice day. Rained most of the day & nite. Ruth bro't Bill
up about 9:30 & left him. She took Danny with her too Decorah. She got a
permanent. Came after Bill about 3 P.M. Went too the Show in eve. It was good.
"Green Promises". Large crowd out. $50 too be given away. Linda
McCabe's number was called so she got $25.
Wed. Apr. 25
Rained all A.M. & at times quite hard. Quit about 1 P.M. & wasn't
bad in P.M. & eve. I went too the Lutheran L.A.S. dinner. They had a very
good dinner & quite a crowd. Mon took Olive & I too Wallace Christopherson's
in P.M. too a "Shower" for Tommy Dean. Quite a few ladies out, (neighbors)
He got such nice gifts. La Vern, Lelia, Edna, May & I furnished the lunch.
Had a nice lunch too. We went down too Dean's a minute on our way home.
Linda rode down with us. Mon went down town a little while in eve.
Thurs. Apr. 26
Quite a nice day. Mon was at Dean's in A.M. Linda came home too dinner
with him & then Dean came after her after dinner. Mon helped Arthur in P.M.
I brought the empty jars, out of the cellar, that had water in them & washed
them up. Worked about all day at that. Quite a job. Went down town in eve.
Fri. Apr. 27
Rather nice early in A.M. but clouded up & it sure did rain hard for awhile.
Then it rained off & on the rest of the day & hard at times. Sun shone
some in P.M. too. Mon was at Arthur's most of the day. I went too Club
at Fern's with Dorothea R. in P.M. Quite a few out & we sure had a
good lunch. Went too the dance in eve. Large crowd out. Howard R's, Gordon
R's, Harold P's & us got the lunch.
Sat. Apr. 28
Not too bad a day until late in P.M. it clouded up & rained. Had quite an
electrical shower in eve. Rained quite a little in the nite too. We worked at
the yard until about 11 & then got ready & went too Decorah. Got home
about 2:30. Went down too Arthurs awhile & then over too Dean's awhile.
Stormed so I didn't go down town in eve. Mon went down town a few minutes
early in eve. Today was our first really warm day.
Sun. Apr. 29
Nice day. Quite warm. We went down too Dean's about 10 A.M. They had gone
too church. Had Tommie baptized. Lloyd's & Si's were at Dean's
for dinner & spent the P.M. too. Mon went fishing in A.M. but didn't
get any fish. We came home about 5:30.
Mon. Apr. 30
Nice day until noon & then about 12:30 it sure did pour down for awhile.
Cleared off later in P.M. although it did look rather rainy at times but didn't
rain again. I washed & ironed. Mon went too Dean's early in A.M. He
& Linda bro't a load of wood up in the pick up about 11:30 & they
were here for dinner. Mon went too Prosper after the rain & got some posts,
wire & a big & small wire gate. Linda & I went too Dean's
with him when he came back. He & Dean started tearing out the yard fence
so as too build a new one. We came home about 5. I went down town a few minutes
after supper. Arthur's bro't the boys up & left them all nite.
They went too Decorah. Had a letter from Isa.
Tues. May 1
Nice day. Pretty warm. Mon was at Dean's all day working at the fence.
I worked at the yard & cleaning up in the garden, most of the day. Went
too the Show in eve. "The Nevadan". It was pretty good. Money not
given away. Not too big a crowd out. Looked like a bad storm just about time
too go too the Show, the wind blew rather hard for a little while but it only
sprinkled a little.
Wed. May 2
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. Mon helped Arthur clean grain in A.M. & was
at Dean's in P.M. I went too Lutheran L.A.S. for dinner. Bernice N. Lillian
S. Catherine H. & Minnie L. served. Went too a W.S.C.S. Convention at the
Decorah Church in P.M. with Albert & Florence. Very interesting meeting.
Had a lunch afterward. We ran around town awhile after the meeting was over.
Got home about 6. Mon went down awhile in eve.
Thurs. May 3
Quite a nice day although it did sprinkle a little during the day. Some what
cooler. Mon was at Dean's all day. I worked at the yard & mowed part
of the lawn. Went down town in eve. Some of us went up too the hall & put
up new curtains in the kitchen. We practiced some after Lodge too getting ready
for next Mon. nite.
Fri. May 4
Nice part of the day & it also sprinkled some too. Quite a breeze &
it was cool. We went too Dean's about 8 A.M. & were there until 5:30.
Dean's went too Decorah about 9:30 after the baby chicks & I kept
Tommy. They were home about 11:30. We gave the chicks their drink & put
them right out before dinner. Linda & I went down on the creek in P.M. &
got some flowers. Went down town in eve & met with Elsie & Zoa too nominate
ladies for the W.S.C.S. offices.
Sat. May 5
Not too bad early in A.M. but started too rain about 12:30 & kept it up
all P.M. & eve. Mon was at Dean's in A.M. I went too Decorah on the
noon bus. Got my hair fixed. Opal went up & fixed it for me. Mabel is still
quite bad at the Hospital. Mon came down in P.M. so I came home with him. We
went down town a little while in eve.
Sun. May 6
Nice day but cool & windy. I went with Dean's too the Plymouth Church
too a 25th Anniversary for Leo & May Willson. Very large crowd out &
they had a grand picnic dinner. We came home about 3:30. We went too Mabel in
eve too the Show "King Solomon's Mines". It was sure good.
Mon. May 7
Nice day. Some warmer. I washed & ironed & did a lot of other things.
Mon was at Dean's all day. We went up too the church, after he got home,
& got some cups & silverware & took too the hall & did some
other work there. I went too the hall about 7. We Rebekah's entertained
Cresco, Decorah & Canton lodges. Cresco put on some work. Had about 80 visitors
besides our own members. Had a short program after Lodge. Had a very nice lunch.
Got home about 11.
Tues. May 8
Nice day. Mon was at Dean's in A.M. He came home for dinner. He went fishing
in P.M. & got quite a few little ones. May Ward & Mrs. Kelly, Alberta,
Mabel & Mrs. Emmons were here in P.M. Irene Vine & Robert Drew were
married this A.M. Dean's bro't Linda & Tommy up & left them
while they went too the Shower Dance at Matter's. They came & got
Tommy but left Linda. Mon went down town a little while in eve.
Wed. May 9
Rather a dark day. Not too cool in A.M. but got much cooler late in P.M. Rained
quite hard in eve. Mon was at Dean's in A.M. He went too Mabel in P.M.
& had a tooth pulled. I went too W.S.C.S. business meeting at Mary Wanless's
in P.M. with Albert's. Election of officers. Ruth P. Pres. Alice Wilbur
V. Pres. Phyliss W. Sec. & Charlene Treas. Had a swell lunch but not many
out.
Thurs. May 10
Quite a nice day but cool. We were down too Dean's awhile in A.M. &
then went too Decorah in P.M. Got our bacon & ham from Wepler's on
our way home so took it too Dean's on our way home & got our bacon
cut up, wrapped & put in the freezer. Went down town in eve. Had a Mothers
Day card & a letter from Isa.
Fri. May 11
Nice day. We went too Arthur's about 8 A.M. & I helped Ruth with her
washing. She hurt her foot last night & it was hard for her too get around.
Mon took her too the Dr. about 10 & I stayed there & got dinner. Dr.
taped her foot & ankle good, said it was torn ligaments. We went too Dean's
after dinner. Mon went too Arthur's with the tractor & got the drill
so he sowed grain all P.M. Dean did odd jobs. I helped Iona some planting garden.
We had supper down there. Went too the Dance in eve. Not too large a crowd out
but they had a good time. We got supper again.
Sat. May 12
Nice day. Some warmer. Mon was at Dean's in A.M. & part of P.M. The
Club entertained the Mother's too a program & lunch. Had a nice program
& lunch. About 40 mothers out. Didn't go down town in eve. Went too
bed early.
Sun. May 13
Nice day but rather cool & windy in P.M. Went too church in A.M. We went
fishing down too Joe Wilhelm's in P.M. Got 32. First ball game of the
season. B.O. & Dorchester at D. B.O. won 2-0. Little son born too Edna &
Clyde Quandahl.
Mon. May 14
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Mowed lawn & did other jobs. Mon was at
Dean's most of the A.M. but came home for dinner. He finished mowing the
lawn in P.M. Mabel Headington passed away in the nite.
Tues. May 15
Quite nice in A.M. & warm. Clouded up in P.M. & looked quite stormy
but just sprinkled some. Mon painted around the windows in A.M. We went down
too Dean's in P.M. & Mon plowed for Dean & I took care of Linda
& Tommy while the kids went too Decorah. We got home about 5:30. Went too
the Show in eve. Not a very good show. Large crowd out. Lyle Knoke got the $50.
Wed. May 16
Not too nice a day. Rather damp & dark. Kind of chilly. Mon went down too
Arthurs after dinner & helped him get his cattle out in the pasture &
then went over too Dean's the rest of the P.M. We had supper early &
then got ready & went up & got Lloyd, Elanore & Donna D. & went
too Ridgeway too a local talent show put on by the Legion. It was good. They
had a free dance afterward. We stayed too that for awhile. Got home about 1.
Thurs. May 17
Rather a dark drizzly cool day. I went up too the church about 10. Muriel T.,
Zoa, Audry G. & I entertained W.S.C.S. Had a pretty good crowd & a good
dinner. Took in about $61. Ruth bro't Danny up & left him with Mon
while she went too Mabel Headington's funeral at Canton with her Dad.
The burial was in B.O. They came after Danny about 4. I got home from the church
about 3. Marvin came home about 4. He had bought a car & drove it home.
We were over there awhile just after he got here. Went down town in eve.
Fri. May 18
Nice day. Mon helped Arthur in P.M. & we went too Decorah in P.M. I went
too Dr. [Borenmeyer?] & had my eyes examined. We went over too Dean's
on our way home & then Linda came on up home with us & Dean bro't
the tractor & plow up. He took our car back home with him & Linda went
home with him too. Mon plowed the garden & then after supper he took the
tractor back too Dean's. We went too the dance in eve. Not too many out
but had a good time.
Sat. May 19
Nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. about 3 & it looked mighty stormy but
we just got a shower. We worked in the garden in A.M. & then in P.M. Mon
went down too Dean's & plowed while they went too Decorah. He came
home just before it rained. I went down town a little while in eve but Mon went
too bed.
Sun. May 20
Nice day. I went too church in A.M. We went too Bluffton in P.M. too the ball
game. Took Danny & Linda along. Not too much of a game. B.O. won 16-1. Stopped
at Dean's with Linda & then stayed there for lunch. Si's were
there too. Came on over too Arthur's & stopped there for awhile so
we didn't get home until about 7:30.
Mon. May 21
Quite nice at times & it sprinkled off & on all day too. I washed, ironed,
planted more garden & mowed some. Dean went fishing so Mon was down there
all day. I went too Lodge in eve. Mon was too tired too go. Quite a few out.
Mrs. Emmons joined by card. We had a nice lunch afterward.
Tues. May 22
Quite a nice day but quite cool. Mon worked at Arthur's all day. He came
up just after dinner & got some seed corn so Dean could go too planting
this P.M. Ruth bro't the boys up a little after 8 & left them while
she went too Decorah too part of the 8th grade graduation exercises. She came
after them about 1:30. Went too the Show in eve. "The Weaver Brothers
& [--?--]" It was sure funny. Quite a few out but the money was not
given away.
Wed. May 23
Nice day. Mon helped Arthur today. I went too Decorah in P.M. with Claude's.
Got my new glasses $28.00. Olive & I went too call on Mabel Schnitzler &
then we both got our hair fixed at the Modern Beauty Shop. Mabel isn't
able too do any thing yet. Mon, Marvin & I went down too Dean's &
Arthur's in eve.

Quite a nice day. Mon worked at Arthur's all day. Went down town in eve.
Fri. May 25
Quite a nice day until late in P.M. it clouded up & rained. Rained quite
hard in eve & in the nite. Wind blew quite hard in the nite. Mon worked
at Arthur's in A.M. Came home about 2. Went too Club at Dorothea R's
in P.M. Not too many out. Had a swell lunch.
Sat. May 26
Not too bad in A.M. but rather cloudy. Rained off & on in P.M. & the
wind blew hard in P.M. & eve. We went too Decorah about 9 & came home
about 11:30. Aunt Eunice, Vin, Eunice & the boys came just after 12 &
stayed until after [1?]. We went down too Dean's a while in P.M. Stopped
at Arthur's a few minutes on our way home. Went down town in eve. Got
too Claudes just as Marie, Paul & the kids came too Claude's. Stopped
& talked a little while. Wasn't down town too long when Francis Ruth,
Otto & Harriet came too B.O. & picked Mon & I up & they came
up here & stayed until about 11:30.
Sun. May 27
Not very nice day. Chilly & windy. Went over too Claude's for dinner
& spent the P.M. Marion & Glorianna, Leonard, Virginia & Arthur's
were there for dinner too picnic dinner & a good one. Dell's came
just after dinner. Claude, Dell, Paul & Mon went too the ball game at B.O.
B.O. & Decorah Cubs. B.O. won 7-1. Herb & Mate Van Vleit came too Claude's
awhile in P.M. They came too B.O. last night. Dean's stopped at Claude's
awhile late in P.M. for a few minutes. Paul & Marie & the kids went
home about 6.
Mon. May 28
Nice day. We took Herb & Mate for a ride in A.M. Down past the old Price
place, then went too the hogs back & too Bluffton, then on back past Dean's.
Stopped there a little while. Got home about 11:45. Had dinner, planted some
potatoes, set out some tomato plants & planted cukes then went down in Arthur's
pasture fishing. Had pretty good luck. Got about 60. Lester & Isa came too
Claude's about 9 P.M.
Tues. May 29
Quite a nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon went down too Dean's awhile
in A.M. We washed the car in P.M. Lester's came here about 4:30 &
stayed all nite. We went down town in eve. Isa & I didn't stay long
but the men stayed quite a while.
Wed. May 30
Nice day. We worked at the car in A.M. shining & polishing it. Herb V. was
here awhile in A.M. & Marvin was over helping polish the car. Lester, Isa
& I went up too the cemetry just after dinner then went too Bluffton too
see Uncle Aaron. We stopped at Joe Morans & at Arthur's on our way
home. Dean's were not at home. Lester's went over too Conrad Johnson's
in eve. Gas tank went dry at supper time.
Thurs. May 31
Not too nice a day. Rained almost all day & sometimes mighty hard. Lester's
went too Decorah early in A.M. & were down there all day. They went up too
Lizzie's in eve & we went down town. Had quite an electrical storm
in the nite & it rained very hard.
Fri. June 1
Rained off & on all day. Not too hard but just damp. Dean's went too
Harmony in A.M. & they left Linda & Tommy here. Lester went visiting
in P.M. & Mon, Isa & I went too Decorah for awhile. Went too the dance
in eve. Not too many out but we had a good time. Rained very hard most of eve
& a lot of thunder & lightning. Marvin went back too his base tonite.
Sat. June 2
Not too nice a day but it didn't rain all day any way. Rained awhile in
A.M. but the sun did shine off & on during the day. Lester's went
home about 9. Mate & Herb came about 10:30 & were here for dinner &
until about 4. Had a good visit. Ruth Holt was here a little while in A.M.
Sun. June 3
Rather a cool, dark, damp day. Dean's bro't Linda & Tommy up
here about 9 & then they went too [Hauge's] Church too the baptism
of Edna & Clyde's baby. They were sponsers. His name is Mark Randal.
They came back here for dinner & were here until about 3:30. Cool nite.
Mon. June 4
Not too nice in A.M. Rather dark & damp but cleared off later in P.M. Cool.
We went down too Arthur's & Dean's in P.M. Went too Lodge in
eve. Quite a few out. Mrs. Mikesh was up from Decorah too visit. Cool nite.
Tues. June 5
Quite a nice day. I washed & ironed. Worked in the garden some in P.M. Mon
went down too Arthur's awhile in A.M. Went too the Show in eve. Large
crowd out. Andy Wenthold got the $35. "The Big Wheel" was the Show
& it was pretty good but plenty noisy. Cool nite.
Wed. June 6
Quite a nice day. Ruth bro't Billy up here about 9 A.M. & left him
until about 11:30. She helped Arthur plant potatoes. Danny is at Bible School
this 2 weeks in A.M. Dean & Linda came up early in A.M. too & Dean left
Linda here while he went too Decorah. He came after her about 11. Mon went too
Decorah in A.M. too. He went down too Dean's in P.M. We went down too
Arthur's in eve too see some movies. Had a letter from Isa.
Thurs. June 7
Quite a nice day, but cool. Albert Emery came up early in A.M. with a different
pump for our well & he & Mon just nicely got started changing it &
Mon got thrown & got a bone broken in his leg. I called Dr. Fritchen &
he came out & examined Mon then took him too the Hospital for Xray's.
Claude & Olive took me down there soon afterward. They put a cast on Mon's
leg almost the entire length of it. Claude's bro't us home about
11:30. Had quite a bit of company in P.M. Arthur came up right after dinner
& then Ruth bro't Billy up & left him while she went too her sewing
circle. Danny went with her. Ed Arnold & Alberta were here in eve. Mon didn't
rest too good at nite.
Fri. June 8
Rather a cloudy day but it didn't rain. Sun shone some too. I set out
some cabbage, ground cherry & pepper plants. Dean's were up in P.M.
Mon had company today too. His toes hurt so & are swollen quite a lot.
Sat. June 9
Nice day. I went too Decorah in P.M. awhile, with Claude's. Went too see
Dr. about Mon's toes & spent most of my time in the office waiting
for him. Dean's were here awhile in eve. Mon doesn't get much rest
day or nite on account of the toes.
Sun. June 10
Nice day. We went too the ball game here at B.O. (In our pasture again this
year) in P.M. with Claude's. B.O. & Nordness. B.O. won 5-4 Good game.
Howard, Fern & Shirley were here awhile before the ball game. Arthur's
& Ray Henning's were here in eve. Mon's toes hurt pretty bad
again today & nite.
Mon. June 11
Rained some early in A.M. but cleared off & was a nice day. I washed &
ironed. Claude took Mon & I too Decorah about 2:30 P.M. Went down too the
Hospital & Dr. sawed off some of the cast from Mon's toes & it
was a big relief. They are sure swollen. He was so much relieved after that,
that he rested tonite for the first nite since his leg was broken.
Tues. June 12
Dandy nice warm day. I washed curtains for the sitting room & washed the
windows in A.M. Went too Decorah about 12:15 with Alberta. Went up too Mabel's
& got my hair fixed. Opal did the most of it but Mabel helped some. She
is much better. Went too the Show in eve. They had it outside in a tent affair.
North of Edie Reed's garage. Not too good a show & not too many out.
The money wasn't called for.
Wed. June 13
Nice day. Mon & Claude went down too Uncle Aaron's in A.M. & then
Mon stopped at Dean's on the way back & stayed until in P.M. &
Dean & Linda bro't him home. I went too West Union about 10:30 A.M.
with Alberta. Alyse Wicks & Mabel K. went too. We went too a Rebekah Convention.
Had a good meeting in P.M. & then in eve Decorah initiated 2 candidates.
They did just swell. We got home about 11:30.
Thurs. June 14
Nice day. Arthur was up awhile early in A.M. & when he went home Mon rode
down town with him & stayed down there awhile. He walked home. He drove
the car down too Arthur's in P.M. & then over too Dean's awhile.
We went out in the field where Arthur was baling hay. Dean was there for awhile
too. I went up too Arnold's in eve too meet with a com. Florence bro't
me home. I worked in the garden & mowed lawn today. Picked a couple of quarts
of strawberries. The first ones.
Fri. June 15
Nice day. Worked in the garden & mowed lawn. We went down too Arthur's
awhile in P.M.
Sat. June 16
Nice day. Quite warm. It did look quite stormy for awhile in A.M. but it soon
cleared off without any rain. I picked berries in A.M. Dean's went too
Decorah in P.M. & left Tommy here. He slept most of the time. I went down
town awhile in eve. Had a letter from Isa.
Sun. June 17
Not too bad in A.M. but clouded up about noon & looked quite stormy. We
got some nice little showers in P.M. but not enough too do good. We went down
too Arthur's awhile early in A.M. I went too church in eve. The children
have been having Bible School the past 2 weeks & tonite they had their program.
It was good but not too many out except the parents & grandparents. Albert's
took me too church & bro't me home. They were here awhile in P.M.
Mon. June 18
Not very nice day. Looked like a bad storm early in A.M. but it just rained
some. Not too much. It was damp all day but cleared off about supper time. I
picked berries in A.M. Got about 12 qts. We got them picked over & the sugar
on them & then took them down too Dean's in P.M. & put them in
the deep freeze. I went too Lodge in eve. Put 13 packages of strawberries in
the deep freeze.
Tues. June 19
Not too nice early in A.M. but cleared off later in the day. I went too Decorah
with Alberta for a while in P.M. Went too the Show in eve. "Every Girl
Should Get Married". It was rather funny. No one got the money.
Wed. June 20
Nice day. I washed & ironed & picked the berries. Got about 16 qts.
Ruth bro't Danny up here about 10 & left him until about 4:30. She
& Bill went down too her folks. Alberta was here a few minutes in P.M. Claude
& Olive were over in eve awhile. Marvin came home unexpectedly this eve.
Thurs. June 21
Rather a damp day & still it didn't rain much. We took 7 packages
of berries down too Deans early in A.M. & put them in the freezer. I went
up too the church about 10:45 too W.S.C.S. dinner. Miriam, Dorothea R., Hazel
D. & Alice W. served. They had a good dinner. Had our business meeting right
after dinner. Ruth is our new president. She & the boys bro't me home.
Marvin was over awhile this morn.
Fri. June 22
Rather a dark day again. Sun did shine a little but not much. Damp at times
too. I picked berries in A.M. Got about 16 qts. & then we picked them over
after dinner & got them ready & took them down too Dean's too
the freezer. Put in 9 cartons today. Took some too Dean's & then stopped
at Arthur's with some on our way home. We went down too the dance awhile
in eve. Different music. 3 from Hesper. They were pretty good.
Sat. June 23
Quite a nice day. I went too Decorah with Claude's in P.M. Didn't
go down town in eve. Had a letter from Isa.
Sun. June 24
Nice day but windy & the wind was chilly. We went too the ball game at B.O.
in P.M. B.O. & Waukon & B.O. won 14-4. Rather a dull game. We went too
Dean's a few minutes afterward & then stopped at Arthur's a
minute on our way home. Dean's left Tommy here in eve while they went
too Locust. Iona helped serve at Young Peoples Society. They came after Tommy
about 11:30. He was a good boy.
Mon. June 25
Not very nice day. Sprinkled off & on all day. Had a hard rain which started
about 7:30 P.M. & kept on raining quite a bit of the nite I guess. Quite
a lot of hard thunder & lightning early in the eve. I washed & ironed
& pick about 12 qts. of berries. Went down town in eve. Iona M. & I
audited the Rebekah Lodge books. Alyse W., Dorothea R. & Mabel K. were there
too. Joe & Iona bro't me home. Had terrible storms out around Mason
City & Allison this eve.
Tues. June 26
Quite a nice day. We picked over the berries & got them ready for the deep
freeze & took them down too Dean's about 9:30. I picked a couple of
boxes of berries in P.M. Went too the Show in eve "Four Faces West".
It was good. The money was not called for.
Wed. June 27
Nice in A.M. & quite warm. Clouded up about 3:30 & it sure did pour
down. Wind blew quite hard for awhile too with very sharp lightning & thunder.
It did clear off later but still the heavy clouds hung off on the horizon &
it keep on with the thunder & lightning. I mowed the yard today. Went too
Mabel in eve with Dean & Lillian, Florence E. went too, too a meeting at
the High school Auditorium. They are trying too get a Hospital started &
had asked people too come from the Lutheran & M.E. church's from B.O.
Thurs. June 28
Quite a nice day but still cool. I picked berries in A.M. & we picked them
over in P.M. We went down too Arthur's awhile in P.M. & then took
Bill & Danny & went over too Dean's awhile.
Fri. June 29
Looked quite rainy at times during the day but only sprinkled some. Cool. I
went too Club at Violet's with Dorothea. Not too many out. Had a nice
lunch.
Sat. June 30
Quite a nice cool day. Picked berries in A.M. Only got about 3 qts. Went too
Decorah in P.M. with Claude's. Mon went down too Arthur's awhile
early in A.M. & down too Dean's in P.M. They were baling hay there.
Dean's bro't Tommy up in eve & left him while they went too
Decorah. Linda was staying down with Lelia for a few days. Had a letter from
Isa.
Sun. July 1
Nice cool, windy day. Ruth bro't Bill up & left him while she &
Danny went too S.S. Danny came up after S.S. & stayed until Ruth came after
them after church. We went too the ball game at B.O. in P.M. B.O. & Bluffton.
B.O. won 6:0. We went for a short ride after the game.
Mon. July 2
Not very nice in A.M. but did brighten up some in P.M. I picked about 4 qts.
of berries today. I went too Lodge in eve. Got home about 9:30.
Tues. July 3
Rainy cool day. Rained off & on all day until later in P.M. & some times
quite hard. I rode too Decorah on the noon bus & got my hair fixed at the
Modern Beauty Shop. Mabel is in Rochester now & not too good. Dean's
were down town & I rode home with them. Linda didn't come home today
either. Went too the Show in eve. "Rebecca & the Stranger".
It was good. They had the Show in the hall & a large crowd out. The money
was not given away.
Wed. July 4
Not very nice day. Cool & damp until later in P.M. the sun came out but
it still stayed cool. We went down too Dean's a few minutes in P.M. Chas.
Wernett set off a charge of dynamite down by the hall about 7 P.M. & it
broke out a number of the hall windows. Blast was heard for quite a ways out
in the country. Mon & Claude went right down too see how bad off the hall
was & then Mon didn't come home until after 9 as he waited for the
sheriff too come. (He didn't come until about 10). We went down too the
dance at the hall. Quite a few out & a good time. Dewey Golberg's
orchestra. They were better tonite.
Thurs. July 5
Quite a nice day. I washed & ironed. Ruth bro't the boys up in P.M.
& left them while she went too her sewing club. I mowed some in P.M. too.
Mon & Danny went down too Dean's awhile in P.M. They are haying there.
I went down town a little while in eve.
Fri. July 6
Quite a nice day. We went down too Dean's early in A.M. & got 3 young
roosters. Dressed them & had one for dinner. We went too Decorah in eve
with Claude's too a Joint Public Installation of the B.O. & Decorah
I.O.O.F. & Rebecca's. About 150 there. The same Rebecca officers from
B.O. were re-installed. Had a nice lunch & then danced for awhile. We got
home about 12.
Sat. July 7
Very warm day. First really warm day we have had yet. We went down town awhile
in eve. Had a very bad storm in the nite. Thunder, lightning, wind hail &
it just poured down.
Sun. July 8
Not very nice day. Rained quite hard at times in A.M. Damp & dark in P.M.
until late in P.M. it cleared off. Dean's were up for dinner & spent
the P.M. Arthur's bro't Bill up here about 4:30 & left him while
they went up too Niagra Cave. They came back after him about 6:15. Will Little's
funeral & burial were here in P.M. The funeral was at the A.C. church.
Mon. July 9
Nice day. I washed & ironed. Went up too the school house in P.M., where
the M.E. ladies have a quilt [on?] quilting it, & I helped awhile. Dean's
came along just after I got home & Linda stayed here for supper. We took
her home after supper & got some more young roosters. It rained again in
the nite.
Tues. July 10
Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day. Dean's bro't Linda
& Tommy up early in A.M. & left them while they went fishing. They got
back about 5. Went too the Show in the hall in eve. Large crowd out. "Belle
of Old Mexico". The money wasn't given out.
Wed. July 11
Rather a dark, damp day. Rained at times during the day & was cool. We went
too Decorah about 8:45. Mon drove for the first time, down there. He got a hair
cut & I got my hair fixed. Got home a little after 12 & had dinner then
I went too Decorah again with Albert's too the W.S.C.S. worship &
missionary meeting at Bernice Halse's. Quite a few out. Had a nice time
& nice lunch.
Thurs. July 12
Not too bad a day. Sun shone most of the day but it did rain in the eve &
nite. Not too hard though. Alberta, Olive, Elanore D. & I went too Decorah
about 12:45 & met with Rebecca's there & took a chartered bus
too Clear Lake. Left Decorah about 2:10. 27 people on the bus & Marion our
driver. Ida Halse met us in Decorah & went too. We stopped at Osage for
coffee & got too Clear Lake about 6. Were at the I.O.O.F. park too see the
Decoration of Chivalry given too 10 men & 5 ladies Cora Simpon from Decorah
was one. We had a good supper as soon as we got out there & then went outside
& watched the work. It was very nice. Stayed a little while afterward &
watched them dance. Left there at 9:40 & got too Decorah about 10. Had a
lunch there & came on home. Had a nice ride & a good time.
Fri. July 13
Nice warm day. Went up too the school house in P.M. & helped quilt awhile.
We went down too Dean's & Arthur's a little while in eve.
Sat. July 14
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. We went down home in A.M. & I went up in the
woods too see about raspberries but there were not enough there too bother with.
I went too Decorah with Claude's after dinner. We were back about 3. I
went up too the Lutheran Church about 4:30 too help get ready for the Ice Cream
Social which the Club had there. They started serving at 5:30. Had a pretty
good crowd. Had it out on the lawn as it was such a nice nite. Took in over
$68. Got home a little after 10.
Sun. July 15
Quite a nice warm day. We went too B.O. too the ball game in P.M. B.O. &
Spring Grove B.O. won 8:0. Not too many out. Claude's went with us. Had
quite a rain in the nite.
Mon. July 16
Not very nice in A.M. but was quite nice in P.M. Went too Lodge in eve. Not
too many out. Practiced some after Lodge. Rev. Losen passed away very suddenly
early this morn.
Tues. July 17
Looked rainy most of the day but it didn't rain until in eve. I went up
too the school house in P.M. & helped quilt. I came home about 5:30 but
the rest stayed awhile longer & finished the quilt. Went too the Show in
eve, but it rained before the Show was over. He had the drawing & Mrs. Harold
Barth got the $50. We left when the money was drawn.
Wed. July 18
Nice day. I washed & ironed. We went down too Dean's after supper
for some eggs & cream & then went over too Howard's for awhile.
Thurs. July 19
Quite a nice day. We went too Decorah early in A.M. Were at the Hospital at
9 A.M. & Dr. took the cast off Mon's leg. Got back home about 10:30
& then I went too W.S.C.S. Phyliss W., Myrtle Snell, Fern R., & Joyce
H. served. Had a good dinner but not as large a crowd as usual. Too many too
busy in the fields. Ruth bro't Danny up too stay with Mon right after
dinner. She bro't me home after the meeting & work was done &
then we all went down too Arthur's. We didn't stay too long. Went
down too the hall in eve & practiced awhile after Lodge. Rev. Losen was
buried today.
Fri. July 20
Nice day. Mon took me down too the hall in A.M. early & Iva S., Mabel K.
& I worked at the old kerosene stove & got it too working. We went down
too Arthur's a while after dinner. They got a new Norge deep freeze while
we were there. Its very nice. Dance at the hall tonite but Mon's foot
was swollen so badly he couldn't get any thing on it & he didn't
feel too good, so we didn't go. Rained in the nite.
Sat. July 21
Nice day. Dean & Linda came up after dinner & Linda stayed. She &
I went too Decorah with Claude's a while. We took her home after supper.
We went down town awhile in eve. Had a very, very hard rain very early in A.M.
& the wind blew quite hard.
Sun. July 22
Looked rather rainy early in A.M. but was quite a nice warm day. Ruth bro't
the boys up & left them while she went too church & Danny stayed up.
Claude's were here for dinner & then we went too Nordness too the
ball game. B.O. won 8:4. Big crowd. We took Danny home after supper.
Mon. July 23
Dandy nice day. Plenty warm. I washed & ironed. Ruth bro't the boys
up about 10 A.M. & left them while she went too Decorah. She came after
them about 1. Dean & Linda & Wallace & Carsten Christopherson were
here awhile at noon. I mowed lawn in P.M. & eve. Had a card from Marie,
Paul & the kids. They are vacationing in Colorado.
Tues. July 24
Hot day again today. Ruth bro't the boys up about 12 & left them while
she went too Louie's cousin's funeral. She came after them about
5. Mon & Danny went down too Arthur's a little while in P.M. Pearl
Feltis Barnes & Nettie Lodgson were here awhile in P.M. Went too the show
in eve. It was good. "Bachelor Father" No one got the money.
Wed. July 25
Nice warm day. We went down too Dean's early in A.M. Had a sick sow &
he called Mon. Mon went down too Arthur's about 10 & helped him hay.
He drove the tractor. Didn't work too long in P.M. though.
Thurs. July 26
Very warm day again. We went too Dean's early in A.M. & we dressed
16 young roosters & put them in the deep freeze. Mon & Dean were at
Arthur's helping awhile in P.M. We got home about 4. Had a letter from
Isa.
Gas tank went dry.
Fri. July 27
Dandy nice day & plenty warm. It did cloud up in P.M. & eve & look
quite rainy but it didn't rain. Mon took Olive & I too Club at Bernice
Newhouse's in P.M. & then he went over too Arthur's too help
hay. Quite a few out too Club & still quite a few not there. Had a nice
lunch. We rode home with Lillian.
Sat. July 28
Very nice day. Quite warm but a nice cool breeze all day. I mowed the yard.
Mon was at Arthur's all day haying. We went over too Hesper after supper
too see about music for the next dance. Went down town in eve.
Sun. July 29
Dandy nice warm day. We went too the ball game at B.O. B.O. won over Locust
11:0. Not too good a game as it was too one sided.
Mon. July 30
Nice early in A.M. but soon clouded up & it started too rain about 9. Had
a lot of thunder & lightning & it rained hard at times. Rained off &
on in P.M. but not so hard. Cleared off late in P.M. I washed. Got my clothes
out before the rain so just left them out. Got them in late in P.M. Didn't
get too dry. Mon went down too Arthur's early in A.M. & helped get
in a load of hay. All he had out. We went too Decorah right after dinner. I
went up too Mabel's & Opal fixed my hair. Mabel is much better but
not able too work yet.
Tues. July 31
Dandy nice day. Some cooler. Mon went too Arthur's early in A.M. &
they mowed hay with the tractor & horses so got the piece cut. Second crop
alfalfa. I ironed in A.M. Went too the Show in eve. Large crowd out. "Red
Hot & Blue". I didn't like it too well. No one got the money.
Dean was here a few minutes early in A.M. He traded cars in Decorah yesterday.
Got quite a nice looking car. Bob McMullen hung himself last nite or early this
A.M. at Decorah. He hadn't been well for some time.
Wed. Aug. 1
Dandy nice day. Mon was at Arthur's all day. They cut grain in A.M. &
baled hay in P.M. I went too Lutheran L.A.S. for dinner. Good dinner but not
too many out. Went too see Mrs. Koenig & also stopped too see Josie, Genev
& "Bert" in P.M. We went too the dance at the hall in eve. Not
too many out but we had a good time. Dewey Golberg's orchestra.
Thurs. Aug. 2
Nice day. Mon was at Arthur's all day. Ruth bro't Bill up &
left him in P.M. while she & Danny went too their sewing Club at Shirley
E's. She took Bill home with her & left Danny too stay all nite. We
went down town in eve. Mon went too Lodge & we Rebekah's practiced
afterward. It clouded up late in P.M. & rained some in eve but it cleared
off right away again. Bob McMullen was buried today.
Fri. Aug. 3
Nice day. Mon was at Arthur's today. I went too Decorah in eve with Claude's.
I went too Rebekah Lodge & they went too play horse shoes. The Rebekahs
from B.O. took the Pres. Traveling Emblem too Decorah. There were 26 from B.O.
26 from Cresco & 8 from Canton besides a couple from Michigan & a lady
from Greeley. We had a nice time. They had a good program after lodge &
a swell supper. I came home with Leon & Nellie M. Got home about 11:30.
Sat. Aug. 4
Nice day. Mon was at Arthur's in A.M. & then they started cutting
grain at Deans about 10:30. Linda came home too supper with him & then we
took her home after supper. Went down town in eve.
Sun. Aug. 5
Rained off & on all day & sometimes plenty hard. Dean's bro't
Tommy up about 9 A.M. & then they, with Si, LaVerne & the kids went
too Prairie Du Chein for a picnic. Not a very nice day for it. Cool day too.
I had a fire in the sitting room stove. Dean's came for Tommy about 6.
He was a good baby.
Mon. Aug. 6
Nice day. Warmer. I washed & ironed. Mowed in P.M. too. Mon went down too
Dean's in A.M. too cut grain but it was too wet so he came home &
went back after dinner. They finished cutting the grain down home. Went too
Lodge in eve. Quite a few out.
Tues. Aug. 7
Not too nice a day. Looked rainy off & on all day. Mon was at Dean's.
Went too the Show in eve but it had hardly started when it started too storm.
(He had it outside) Rained very hard with plenty of wind thunder & lightning.
Olive & I got as far as the store & waited there until it let up some
& then came home. Rained quite a lot in the nite with plenty of thunder
& lightning.
Wed. Aug. 8
Nice day. Mon went too Dean's early in A.M. & helped get some cattle
in too sell also some sows. He went too Arthur's in P.M. too help cut
grain. I mowed in A.M. & finished up. Went up too Aunt Alice's in
P.M. too W.S.C.S. meeting. Not too many out. I went home with Ruth & the
boys & Mon & I stayed there for supper. Came home about 7. Cool nite.
Thurs. Aug. 9
Dandy nice day but cool. Mon went too Arthur's early in A.M. & they
finished cutting grain. He came home about 11 & we got ready & went
too Cresco too the Fair. We had dinner at Cresco & then on out too the Fair
Grounds. Not too big a crowd out & the Fair didn't amount too much.
We came home after the ball games. Stopped at the M.E. church where they were
holding the ice cream Social. We had lunch & then Mon went on too Lodge
& I stayed & helped. Got home about 10:30.
Fri. Aug. 10
Nice day but cool. Dean & Linda were here awhile in A.M. I went up too the
Lutheran Church in P.M. too a program & lunch. It was good. Went down too
Dean's a few minutes after supper & got some cream & eggs. Had
a card from Isa.
Sat. Aug. 11
Nice day but cool. We went too Decorah about 8:45. Mon got a hair cut &
did quite a lot of business. We had dinner down town. Got home about 1:45 &
then Mon went down too Dean's awhile. We went down too Arthur's
a few minutes late in P.M. Went too Harmony in eve too their Fun Fest. It was
pretty good but plenty cool, setting outside. Got home about 11:30.
Sun. Aug. 12
Quite a nice day but cool. We went too Bluffton in P.M. too the ball game. Bluffton
& Locust. B. won 9-8. B.O. was supposed to play Waukon but Waukon couldn't
get their diamond so they didn't play.
Mon. Aug. 13
Rather a dark damp day. Mon went down too Dean's early in A.M. He traded
tractor tires in Decorah Sat. & they came out & put the new ones on
today. He didn't get home until about 2:30. I mowed in P.M. Lizzie &
Aunt Eunice were here awhile in P.M. Mon went down town a little in eve.
Tues. Aug. 14
Not very nice day. Rained quite hard at times. Went too the Show in eve. "Bells
of Coronado". Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Foy Willing & The Riders of
the Purple Sage. It was good & a big crowd. Had it in the hall this time.
Edwin Knoke got the $30. Had a letter from Isa.
Wed. Aug. 15
Not too nice a day. Didn't do much of anything.
Thurs. Aug. 16
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon & I mowed the lawn too. We went
too Decorah in eve too the first of the Fair. It was too be square dance night
also jigging etc. but they just got nicely started when it started too rain
& it sure did pour down with plenty of wind, thunder & lightning. I
was up in the grand stand so I didn't get wet but got my feet wet getting
too the car after the rain quit. Water every where. Quite a crowd there. Got
home about 10.
Fri. Aug. 17
Nice day until about 6 it clouded up & there was a shower but it cleared
off right afterward & was a nice night. We went down too Dean's a
few minutes in A.M. Had an early dinner & then went too Decorah too the
Fair. Went up in the Grand Stand in P.M. & watched the tractor trials, free
acts, kitten ball game & at 4 P.M. the ball game between B.O. & Nordness
started. They played until the rain stopped the game. B.O. was ahead then the
last of the 5th inning so they got the money. We had a lunch & walked around
a little & then I went back up in the Grand Stand & watched the evening
performance. They showed the prize winning cattle, hogs & sheep before the
Grand Stand & then had the evening performance. It was sure good & an
enormous crowd. Had a lunch & then came home.
Sat. Aug. 18
Nice day. Rather cloudy & damp in A.M. early but was nice after that. We
went too Decorah a little while in P.M. Mon went down & got Billie about
6 P.M. & he stayed with us all nite. Arthur's went too the Fair.
Sun. Aug. 19
Rained quite hard for awhile early in A.M. & was damp & dark until after
dinner, then it cleared off & was nice. Arthur came after Bill about 11.
We were alone all day & eve. Cool day.
Mon. Aug. 20
Not very nice day. Cool. Rained off & on all day & sometimes quite hard.
Sun did shine a little while in P.M. Cleared off after supper & was very
nice. Went over too Lillian's in P.M. too a "Shower" for Velda
Kess's baby boy Ricky Lee. She & the baby are here for a short visit.
Quite a few out. Baby got nice gifts. Had a good lunch. Went too Lodge in eve.

Tues. Aug. 21
Quite a nice day. I washed & ironed & mowed lawn. Mon was at Arthur's
all day helping him with some carpenter work. Went too the Show in eve. Bob
Hope in "The Great Lover". Quite a show & a good crowd. The
money wasn't given away. Had a letter from Isa & a card from Herb
& Mate.
Wed. Aug. 22
Nice day but cool. Mon was at Arthur's awhile in A.M. but he came home
for dinner. He painted on the garage in P.M.
Thurs. Aug. 23
Nice cool day. Mon was at Dean's all day painting the milk house but he
& Linda came up here for dinner. Ruth bro't Bill up here about 10:30
& left him & she & Danny went too Decorah. They came after Bill
about 3:45. Alberta, Iva S., Mrs. Emmons & Olive came in eve & we studied
the unwritten work of the Rebekah Lodge. Mon went too Lodge.
Fri. Aug. 24
Rather cloudy at times & cool. Sprinkled a little in eve. Mon was at Dean's
in A.M. He came home for dinner & then I went back down with him in P.M.
Linda & I went up in the woods & got some blackberries. Went too the
dance in eve. Not very many out. Dewey Golberg's played. Had quite a good
time.
Sat. Aug. 25
Rained off & on all day & sometimes quite hard. We went too Decorah
after dinner & I got a permanent. Didn't get home until after 6. We
went down town a few minutes in eve. Quite a lot of thunder & lightning
so we came home about 8:30. Rained after we got home.
Sun. Aug. 26
Dandy nice day. Quite warm. We went down too Arthur's about 9:45 &
got them & went too Prairie Du Chein. Took a picnic dinner & had it
at Villa Lewis & then went too the Park & Zoo & saw so many animals
& birds etc. It's a very nice place. We left there about 3 & went
up too La Crosse & then home. Got back too Arthur's about 6:30. Helped
a little there & then came home. Mon & Arthur bought some fish at a
little town in Wis. so we had fish for supper.
Mon. Aug. 27
Not very nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was quite a nice day. Warm.
Didn't do much of anything. Ruth bro't the boys up in eve &
left them all nite.
Tues. Aug. 28
Dandy nice day. Plenty warm. I washed & ironed. Ruth came after the boys
about 8:15. Mon was at Dean's in A.M. painting. He finished 1 coat on
the milk house at noon & then came home. He painted windows on the house
in P.M. Went too the Show tonite. It was outside. Good crowd & a pretty
good show. "Boy From Cleveland". A Dickson boy got $10.

Not very nice day. Damp & warm. Mon went down too Arthur's in A.M.
& helped him vaccinate hogs in A.M.
Thurs. Aug. 30
Very warm muggy day. Dark in A.M. but cleared off in P.M. We went down too Dean's
a little while early in A.M. Arthur Walter came here just after dinner looking
for Dean as they were going too thresh. We went up to Si's too tell Dean
as he was there. Stayed a little while. Mon took me down too Mary Safford's
in P.M. but she wasn't home. We stopped at Raymond Holt's a little
while on our way home. Went over too Olive's in eve. Rebekah's met
there too study. Mon went too Lodge.
Fri. Aug. 31
Not too nice a day. Damp & dark. Warm in A.M. but cooled off quite a bit
in P.M. Started too sprinkle about 4:30 & kept it up the rest of the P.M.
& eve. I helped Olive cook for thresher's in A.M. We went too Club
at Evelyn Underbakke's in P.M. Not too many out. Had a nice lunch. Mon
went too Decorah in A.M. & didn't get home until after 6. Wasn't
in very good shape. He went down town in eve.

Not very nice day. Damp & dark. Rained at times. Mon mowed the lawn in P.M.
I helped a little. I went down town awhile in P.M. Didn't go down town
in eve. Cool nite.

Dark, damp, cool day. We were alone all day. Went too Harmony in eve too the
Show. "Father's Little Dividend". It was sure good.
Mon. Sept. 3
Nice day. We went too Dean's early in A.M. too thresh. The shocks were
damp so some of the men turned them out. They didn't get too threshing
then until 11 A.M. & it took them until 4:30 too thresh 523 bu. Lelia was
there too help too so she did the washing in A.M. for Iona. Went too Lodge in
eve. Not too many out. Took Nellie Arnold Nelson back into Lodge. Had a lunch
too.
Tues. Sept. 4
Quite a nice day. I washed in A.M. Mon went down too Arthur's early in
A.M. & then he brought Bill back home with him. Ruth & Danny went too
Decorah. They came back here just as I had dinner ready so they stayed here
for dinner & then I went with Ruth & Bill & Danny came with Mon.
We went too Dean's & got the oil cloth & then back too Arthur's
too get supper for the threshers. They didn't get there too thresh until
about 2 so didn't get too much done. I helped Ruth do most of the dishes
& then came home. Went too the Show "The Eagle & the Hawk".
I didn't like it too well. Money not given away. Got a letter from Isa.
Wed. Sept. 5
Not very nice day. Rather dark & damp. Had quite a shower about 11 P.M.
We took the rags that the ladies had sewn for the rugs down too Mary Safford
in P.M. for her too weave. Dean's brought the kids up in eve & left
them while they went too a Shower Dance at Matter's. They came after Tommy
but left Linda all nite.
Thurs. Sept. 6
Nice bright day but cool. We took Linda home early in A.M. & stopped at
Arthur's too see about threshing but it had rained too hard too thresh.
Ruth bro't Bill up & left him in P.M. while she went too her sewing
circle. Mon went too Lodge in eve & I went too Alberta's where we
met too study the Unwritten Work. Had a nice lunch.
Fri. Sept. 7
Quite a nice day but cool. I was quite sick early in A.M. & didn't
feel too good until in P.M. We went too Decorah right after dinner & I went
down too the Hospital & had a "blood count". Went back up too
Dr. Fritchen's & waited most of the P.M. too see him, but he couldn't
find anything wrong with me. We didn't go too the Dance in eve.
Sat. Sept. 8
Nice day. We went too Arthur's early in A.M. too thresh. They finished
up there about 4:30. Helped clear up things after supper so we didn't
get home until after 7. Mr. & Mrs. K., Roger, his wife & baby were there
a little while in P.M. We went down town awhile in eve.
Sun. Sept. 9
Rained off & on all day & nite & sometimes quite hard. Cool day
& nite too. Joe & Iona were up & spent the eve.
Mon. Sept. 10
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Dean's went too Decorah awhile
in P.M. & left Tommy here. He slept almost the entire time they were gone.
We listened too a tape recording of a talk by Marvin from Korea, on the 4:30
P.M. news from K.D.E.C. He sounded as if he were right here in the room. Went
too Canton in eve with Lloyd Dinger's too Lodge. Decorah, Cresco, Lanesboro,
Harmony & 2 visitors from Arkansas were there. Over 100 there. They had
a good program & a good lunch & we surely had a grand time. Got home
about 11:30.
Tues. Sept. 11
Dandy nice day. Quite warm & windy & even a warm nite. We went down
too Dean's a few minutes early in A.M. & then Mon painted the rest
of the day. Went too the Show in eve. "Kentucky Blue Grass". It
was a good show but I didn't care too much for it. Large crowd. Marvin
Sexton's name was called but as he is in the Service he wasn't there.

Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day & sometimes quite hard. Mon
went down town in A.M. & as Dean & Linda were up town Linda came home
too dinner with Mon & then he took her home after dinner. I went too Florence
E's in P.M. with Miriam too the W.S.C.S. worship meeting. Quite a few
out.
Thurs. Sept. 13
Dandy nice day. We went too Decorah about 10 A.M. Mon got a hair cut & I
got my hair fixed. We had dinner down town. Came home the river road & stopped
a few minutes at the field where Dean was mowing hay. Mon went too Lodge in
eve. The girls met here in eve too study.
Fri. Sept. 14
Nice day. Mon went down too Dean's a little while in A.M. but was home
for dinner. I went back down there with him after dinner. We stopped & took
Arthur over with us & they worked at the hay. Arthur baled & Dean raked.
They broke the baler in P.M. & had too go too Harmony too get it fixed.
Linda came home with us & stayed all nite. It rained a little in the nite
but not much.
Sat. Sept. 15
Nice day but cool. Mon took Linda home in A.M. but came home for dinner as it
was too damp too hay. He went back in P.M. They had trouble with the baler in
P.M. so had too have a man come down from Harmony & fix it. Mon & Dean
hauled in bales. We went down town a little while in eve. Cool nite. Edward
Nelson passed away this P.M.

Nice day. Mon went down too Arthur's in A.M. & helped him fix the
baler. We went too Canton in P.M. too the ball game. B.O. won 5-0. Arthur's
bro't Bill up & left him in eve while they went too a weiner roast.

Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon helped put in hay bales at Deans'
in A.M. & helped mow hay at Arthur's in P.M. I went down town awhile
in P.M. Called on Alice Wicks & Margaret Houdek. Howard Bradley was here
for supper. Trying too trade cars with us but he wanted too much money. Went
too Lodge in eve. We had a lunch & the most of them played cards. Got home
about 10:45. Cool nite. Had a letter from Isa.

Dandy nice day. I washed some blankets etc. in A.M. Mon was at Dean's
in A.M. & at Arthur's for awhile in P.M. Went too the Show in eve.
It was good "Peggy". The money wasn't given away. Big crowd.

Dandy nice day. Mon was at Arthur's in A.M. but was home for dinner. He
went back in P.M. & helped hay. Edward Nelson was buried this P.M.

Our 35th Wedding Anniversary. Dandy nice day. Mon helped finish up the haying
at Arthur's in A.M. Was home for dinner. He painted in P.M. I was down
town awhile in P.M. The W.S.C.S. had a food sale at Ernest's store. We
had an early supper & I went back too the store & stayed while the girls
were at supper. Went too Olive's in eve too "the Rebekah study"
but only Mrs. Emmons & I were there. Mon went too Lodge. Went down too Dean's
early in A.M. & got some eggs & cream.
Fri. Sept. 21
Rained almost all day & sometimes quite hard & it was cooler. We went
too the dance in eve. Quite a few out & we had a good time. Dewey G. played.

Nice day but cool. We went too Decorah about 10 & got home about 1. Went
down town in eve. Earl Bovee came too B.O. this noon after an absence of 43
years & I saw him & had a visit with him. Cool nite.
Sun. Sept. 23
Quite a nice day until later in P.M. it clouded up & rained some. Rained
quite hard in eve. Deans' bro't Tommy up here & left him about
11:30 & they went on a picnic. He slept most of the time. They got back
about 6 after him. Mon went fishing in P.M. & got 28 so we had plenty for
supper. Arthur's were here awhile in P.M. They bro't some movies
up too show.
Mon. Sept. 24
Not too nice a day & not too bad either. I washed & did part of my ironing.
Alberta was here awhile in P.M. I canned some apples. We went down too Dean's
& Arthur's just a minute late in P.M. Went down too the Hall in eve
too start practicing the Rebekah Degree drill. Got home about 10. Cool nite.
First real frost but it didn't do much damage.
Tues. Sept. 25
Nice day. The "Co op" put in a big new tank over at the bulk station
& we all in the neighborhood spent most of the A.M. watching them do it.
Mon helped Claude with shingling in P.M. Went too the show in eve. "My
Friend Irma". It was sure funny. Large crowd & Bob Dinger got the
$50.
Wed. Sept. 26
Not very nice day. Rather damp at times & very windy. Didn't do too
much. Went down too Arthur's in eve, with Charlene, too meet with the
menu comm. for the annual dinner. Got home about 12. Cool nite. Mon & I
went down too the hall just after dinner & set up a new little stove the
Odd Fellows had bought. Second hand stove, but we started a fire in it &
it sure worked good. We did some cleaning up too.
Thurs. Sept. 27
Nice day but cool & very windy. Mon started our new toilet in P.M. Got the
hole dug & some boards nailed together. We went too the hall in eve. Had
a little get together after Lodge for Meda & Harold Harvey who are here
visiting. Had a nice lunch. Cool nite with a frost again but it didn't
do too much damage.
Fri. Sept. 28
Nice bright day but it was cool. Mon helped Claude shingle in A.M. They finished
at noon. We were both there for dinner. Claude took us too Club at Muriel T's
in P.M. & Mon came after us. Not too many out. Had such a nice lunch. Had
a letter from Isa.

Rather damp early in A.M. & looked rather rainy but wasn't a bad day.
Mon was at Arthur's in A.M. too vaccinate hogs. We went too Decorah in
P.M. & I got my hair fixed. Went down town awhile in eve. Cool nite. Went
down too Dean's just after supper & got a chicken & some cream.

Beautiful day. Nice & warm. Ruth bro't Bill up early in A.M. &
left him while she went too S.S. & church. We cleaned up the car in A.M.
& went for a ride in P.M. Went too Rushford & on too Winona then back
down the river too La Crescent & home. It was a beautiful drive. Trees were
so pretty.

Rather foggy & damp early in A.M. but cleared off & was a grand day.
Nice & warm & so was the nite. Mon worked at the toilet. I went too
Lodge in eve. Mon was too tired. We practiced awhile & then had a lunch.
Tues. Oct. 2
Dandy nice day except for a little shower in P.M. Very warm again. I washed
& ironed. Mon worked at the toilet. Dean, Iona & Tommy were here a few
minutes in P.M. Linda was at Si's. Had quite a storm in eve. Lightning
was fierce, with plenty of thunder & also a hard rain. Didn't go to
the Show.
Gas tank went dry today.
Wed. Oct. 3
Dandy nice day. Warm. Dean's bro't Linda & Tommy up here early
in A.M. & they went fishing. Mon worked at the toilet. Dean's came
about 5:30 but Linda wanted too stay for supper so she did. We took her home
about 7. Stopped at Arthur's a little while & saw some movies. Ruth
had too go too a meeting of the menu com. so she left shortly after we got there.
Both boys were in bed. Danny didn't feel very good. We took Linda on home
& stopped a few minutes there. Adeline Mikesh was here awhile in P.M. Had
quite a storm in the nite again. Sharp lightning & thunder & rain again.
Thurs. Oct. 4
Not very nice day. Rather dark all day until late in P.M. the sun shone some.
Arthur's bro't Bill up about 10:30 & they took Danny too the
Dr. Ruth came after Bill then about 4:30. Mon went too Lodge in eve but I was
sick so I didn't go down town. Listened too the first game of the World
Series Ball game between the N.Y. Giants & the N.Y. Yankee's. Giants
won 5:1.
Fri. Oct. 5
Not too nice a day. Rather dark & damp most of the day & cool. Sun did
shine a little. Didn't do much. Listened too the World Series Ball game
in P.M. Yankee's won 3:1. Went too the dance in eve. Not too many out
but we had a good time. Dewey G's played.
Sat. Oct. 6
Rather cloudy & dark day. Damp at times. We went too Decorah in A.M. Got
home about 12:15. Listened too the ball game in P.M. Giants won 6:2. I went
down town a little while in eve.
Sun. Oct. 7
Quite a nice day. We went too Mabel in P.M. too the Show "Francis Goes
Too the Races". It was sure funny. Arthur's & Dean's came
up too supper. We had oyster stew. Arthur's bro't their movies along.
We were looking at them when the power went off so we didn't get too see
all of them. Had too do dishes by lamp light. The kids went home about 10. Power
was off about 8 hrs. Froze quite hard tonite. No ball game today on account
of rain.
Mon. Oct. 8
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon helped Arthur cut corn in P.M. Dean
& Linda came soon after dinner & Linda stayed here while Dean went too
Prosper. Listened too the ball game in P.M. Yankees won 6:2. I went down too
the hall in eve too practice. Rained some while we were there & in the nite.
Tues. Oct. 9
Nice day. Mon helped Dean fix a toilet. I listened too the ball game in P.M.
Yankees won 13-1 & dug some of the glad bulbs in P.M. Went too the Show
in eve. "Branded". It was good & a good crowd. Jack Whalen got
the money.
Wed. Oct. 10
Dandy nice day. Warm. Went too the Hall early in A.M. & a bunch of us cleaned
the Lodge room. I came home at noon but some of them worked in P.M. & cleaned
the anterooms & kitchen. I went too Zoa's in P.M. too W.S.C.S. Worship
meeting. Nice crowd & a good lunch. Mon was at Arthur's all day working
at the corn.
Thurs. Oct. 11
Bill's 2nd Birthday. Dandy nice warm day. Mon was at Arthur's all
day working at the corn. I was at the church most of the day. We tied 3 quilts.
Had a good dinner & a lunch before we came home. We went down too Arthur's
in eve too Bill's birthday party. Dean's were over too. Saw movies.
Had a good lunch. The Lutheran L.A.S. had their sale & lunch this eve. Had
a letter from Isa.
Fri. Oct. 12
Dandy nice day. Mon was at Dean's all day cutting corn. I did odd jobs,
finished digging the glads etc.
Sat. Oct. 13
Dandy nice day. Quite windy. Mon was at Dean's in A.M. shocking corn.
He came home for dinner. We went too Decorah in P.M. & Dean & Linda
went with us too get his car which had been down there getting fixed. Linda
went with me too get my hair fixed & do my trading. We met Dean then &
had a lunch & then they went home. We got home about 5:15. Went down town
in eve.
Sun. Oct. 14
Rather a dark cool windy day. Sprinkled some in A.M. Cleared off late in P.M.
& was a beautiful evening. We went fishing with Claude & Olive in P.M.
over at Cold Water bridge. I got 1 trout about 9 in. long & 1 other little
fish. Claude got 3 little fellows. We came on back & stopped at the creek
at Fred Walters & Mon & I got 26 more & Claude's got quite
a few. Got home at 6. Laura Berge & Clem Headington were married this P.M.
at the Little Brown Church. They have bought a place in Decorah & will live
there.
Mon. Oct. 15
Dandy nice day. I washed & ironed. Mon was at Dean's in A.M. helping
with the corn. He & Linda were here for dinner & then they went back
right after dinner & Mon started plowing in P.M. We went too Lodge in eve.
Practiced some & then had lunch. Got cooler in the nite.
Tues. Oct. 16
Not such a nice day. Rather dark & damp most of the day & much cooler.
Mon helped Arthur take care of pigs in A.M. He was home for dinner & then
went too Dean's in P.M. & plowed. I went too the Show in eve. "Square
Dance Jubilee" & it was good. Money got given away.
Wed. Oct. 17
Not very nice day. Rained off & on all day & sometimes quite hard. Dean's
bro't Linda & Tommy up at noon & left them while they went too
Locust too Geo. Young Sr's funeral. They came after them about 4. Quite
a hard frost tonight.
Thurs. Oct. 18
Quite nice in A.M. but clouded up in P.M. & rained. Mon was at Dean's
in A.M. taking care of pigs & putting rings in their noses. I went too W.S.C.S.
dinner. Margaret Ward, Violet Underbakke, Lucile Ottaway & Mrs. Lloyd Knowlton
served. Not too big a crowd out but still a good crowd. Had a very good dinner.
Went down town in eve. Mon went too Lodge. We women went up too the Hall after
Lodge & practiced some.
Fri. Oct. 19
Not too bad a day but cold. Ruth bro't the boys up early in A.M. &
left them while she went too a meeting at Nordness. She came after them about
4:30. Mon came down with a bad cold in the night so he didn't feel very
good. We were invited too a Shower dance at the Community Building in Decorah
for Mr. & Mrs. Merlin Engen (Norma Kipp) but Mon wasn't able too go.
Dance in B.O. too but we didn't go.

Quite nice in A.M. Clouded up in P.M. Started too rain about 3:30 & kept

about 10. Mon got a hair cut. I got a couple of new dresses. One a wash dress
& the other a dress up dress. We got home about 1. We went down too Dean's
in P.M. after some eggs & cream. Iona & Linda were in Decorah. Just
Dean & Tommy at home. Rained so we didn't go down town in eve. Mon
feels some better today.

Dark damp day. Sprinkled off & on all day. Had quite an electrical storm
in eve & it rained very hard. We were alone all day & eve.

Not very nice day. Dark & dreary & it rained some. Didn't do much.
Had a letter from Isa.
Tues. Oct. 23
Not very nice day again. I washed & ironed even though the clothes didn't
dry too well. Dean was up early in A.M. & then Mon went down there &
they picked some corn with the picker. Went too the Show in eve "War With
the Army". It was sure funny. Quite a crowd out but no one got the money.

Dandy nice day. Warmer. Mon went down home in P.M. & plowed. Guess I got
Mon's cold. I went down too the hall in eve & practiced. Not all of
them there. Cool nite.
Thurs. Oct. 25
Nice bright day & very windy. Mon was at Dean's in P.M. plowing. I
scrubbed & waxed floors in P.M. Went down town in eve. Mon went too Lodge.
Fri. Oct. 26
Rather a dark day & damp at times. We went down too Safford's in A.M.
& got the rugs Mary had made for the W.S.C.S. & then went on too Dean's
& got some eggs & cream. I went too Club at Phyliss W's in P.M.
with Dorothea R. Not too many out. Had a nice lunch. Olive & Claude went
too Marie's this morning.
Sat. Oct. 27
Quite a nice day but windy & cool. Harold Christopher came early in A.M.
& we started tearing the house up or rather the dining room & kitchen.
Tore the old chimney down & started to build a new one & then we thought
we would tear the partition out so they quit that chimney & started building
one on the south side of the kitchen. Harold was here for dinner & supper.
We went down town awhile in eve.
Sun. Oct. 28
Quite a nice day but very windy. We went down home in P.M. & stopped at
Arthur's too but no one home either place. Albert & Florence were
here awhile in eve. They bro't the cranberries, oranges & sugar for
the cranberry relish for the Annual dinner.
Mon. Oct. 29
Dandy nice day. Quite breezy. I washed. Harold C. came & finished the chimney.
[blank] Baker came in P.M. & he & Henry tore out some part of the rooms
& fixed the roof etc. [Vine?] came up from McArthurs after dinner &
changed the stove over too the other side of the room. Zoa came up in P.M. &
we ground cranberries, oranges & apples for the relish for the Annual dinner.
Mon took me over too Bernard W's in eve & I went over to Charlene's
with Phyliss too a meeting & then she brought me home. Alice Wilbur bro't
some apples down in P.M. for us too use for the relish.
Tues. Oct. 30
Not too nice a day. Rather dark & it did rain some early in P.M. but not
too long. We went too Decorah in A.M. & I got my hair fixed. Dean &
Linda were down town & she came home with us. We had dinner & then went
down too Dean's & wrapped meat for the deep freeze (Pork). Went too
the Show in eve. "Union Station". It was a good show but too much
shooting. No one got the money. Terribly windy in P.M. & eve & it got
much colder late in P.M.
Wed. Oct. 31
Quite a nice bright day. I went up too the Church awhile in P.M. too help get
ready for the Dinner & Sale. Ruth & the boys bro't me home. Deans'
were up in eve. Iona made the dressing for the turkey, Florence bro't
today, for me too cook for tomorrow. We got it all stuffed & ready for the
oven. They went home about 10. Cold nite. Claude's got home this P.M.
Thurs. Nov. 1
Not very nice early in A.M. but cleared off & was a very nice day &
nite. Got the turkey in too cook about 7:15 & it was done at 1. Mon went
just after dinner & took Bill too Krumm's & bro't Danny
up here so Ruth could go too the church too work. Isa & Lester came about
1:30. Mon took me with my food too the church about 3 so Isa & Danny went
over too Olive's. Had our Annual Dinner & Bazaar at the church tonite.
Started serving about 5:30 & didn't get done until nearly 9 &
then the sale but we finished with that about 11. Sale went pretty good. I helped
with that too. Had a very large crowd out too supper & a good supper. Lester's
& Mon & Danny were up too eat too. Arthur's bro't me home
about 11:30. Cold nite.
Fri. Nov. 2
Zero this morn. Coldest Nov. 2 on record. Not too bad a day but rather windy
& cold. Mon took Isa & I up too the church about 9 & we helped with
the dishes & getting things straightened out again. Didn't do much
all day but visit. Olive was over a while in P.M. We went too the dance in eve.
Skaim boys played & it was good too have them back again. Had a good time.
We had too get supper. Sat & visited after we got home from the dance until
about 2.

Regular blizzard most of the day. Wind from the south in A.M. & until later
in P.M. it got around into the north & got colder. Lester's went home
about 10:45 & then Mon went down & helped Dean take Arthur's bull
over home. Didn't go down town in eve. Too stormy. Cold nite.

5º below. Bright day but cold. Didn't warm up too much. Dean, Linda
& Sharon N. were here a little while in P.M. Cold nite.
Mon. Nov. 5
10º below. Dandy nice day but cold. I washed & ironed. We went down
too Dean's & Arthur's a few minutes late in P.M. I went too
Lodge in eve & then after Lodge some of the Rebekah's went too Olive's
too wait for their men who went too Harmony too put on some work. Mon drove
& took a load. They got back about 12. We played cards at Olive's
& she served us a lunch. Had a note from Isa too let us know they got home
O.K. but that the roads were terrible. Johnnie Carolan got his hand caught in
the corn picker this P.M. He was in the field alone but he got the power shut
off so helped himself that way. He couldn't get out until help came. Cold
nite.
Tues. Nov. 6
5º below. Dandy nice day. Warmed up some. Mon went down too Dean's
early in A.M. & got the pick up & bro't a load of wood up here.

Lizzie was here a little while late in P.M. Mon went too Prosper late in P.M.
& got some coal, in the pick up. Harold Christopher was here a few minutes
in eve.

Dandy nice day. Warmer. Ole was here again today. Ruth bro't the boys
up & left them in P.M. while she went too Gloria Martin's too the
Booster's Club. Mon went too Decorah in eve with Claude too an I.O.O.F.
meeting. Olive & I went down town.
Fri. Nov. 9
Beautiful day. Quite warm. Ole didn't come back today too work. He was
up a few minutes after dinner though. Mon worked in A.M. & went too Dean's
in P.M. They were picking corn there. The Rebekah's had a little farewell
party for Mrs. Emmon's in P.M. as she is going too Lucile's for
the winter. We invited a few of her older friends too. There were 22 of us there
& then Dorothy E. came after school & she & Ted had lunch. We had
a nice lunch. Dean's bro't Tommy up in eve & left him while
they went too a program at the Van Vleit School.
Sat. Nov. 10
Dandy nice day. We went too Decorah about 11. I got a new hat & shoes (Shoes
cost over $12) Mon went too Dr. [Borenmeyer?] & had his eyes tested. We
came home a little after 3. Stopped down town on our way home & I went over
too see Alberta. She is sick in bed. We went too a Benefit Dance at the Hall
in eve for Howard Walter's. Large crowd out & they seemed too have
a good time. Skaim boys played. They cleared over $100 for Howards.
Sun. Nov. 11
Quite a nice day. We went down too see Uncle Aaron awhile in P.M. Stopped at
Dean's on our way home & they were just going too have lunch so we
ate with them. Clyde, Edna & the boys were there. We stopped a few minutes
at Arthur's then too.
Mon. Nov. 12
Not very nice day until about 3 P.M. it cleared off & was quite nice the
rest of P.M. & eve. Quite warm & windy. Rather damp until it cleared
off. I went down too see Alberta in P.M. She is feeling better today. She got
up & sat in the chair while I was there for the first since she was taken
sick. We went too Mabel in eve too the Show "Rich, Young & Pretty".
It was pretty good. Quite a lot of singing. Had quite a storm in the nite. Lightning,
thunder, rain & it hailed quite hard for awhile. Quite a lot of rain fell
too. Quite warm.
Tues. Nov. 13
Rained hard most of the day. Sometimes not so hard but it did rain most of the
time until late in P.M. Not too cold. Didn't do too much only in P.M.
awhile we took off paper in the dining room. Lizzie & Dean were here awhile
in P.M. I went too the Show in eve. "Sands of Iwo Jima". Too much
fighting. Large crowd out. Money not given out. Babe W. bro't me home.

Not very nice day. Quite like a blizzard at times off & on all day &
colder. We went too Decorah in A.M. awhile. Mon got his glasses ($28.00) I went
too W.S.C.S. meeting at Phyliss W's in P.M. with Ruth & the boys.
Not too many out. Had a nice lunch.
Thurs. Nov. 15
Rather a dark day but not too bad. I washed. Dean's bro't Linda
& Tommy up & left them while they went too La Crosse. They got back
here about 5:30. Went down town in eve.
Fri. Nov. 16
Not very nice day. Snowed off & on all day & the wind blew so it was
a blizzard at times but not too much snow fell. I ironed in A.M. Ruth bro't
the boys up & left them in P.M. & she & Inez went out selling the
Calendar the W.S.C.S. has for sale. She came after them about 5. We went too
the dance in eve. Quite a crowd & a good time. S. boy's played. We
got lunch ready. Leon & Nellie Marlow helped us. Cold nite.
Sat. Nov. 17
Rather blizzardy at times. Got colder in P.M. We went down home early in A.M.
& got some cream & eggs. Mon loaded up a pick up load of wood &
Dean bro't it up for us. Linda came home with us & went back with
her Dad. We went too Decorah about 11:30. I got my hair fixed. We stopped at
Wepler's on our way home & got our smoked meat. We came on up home
& fixed fires & changed clothes & then took the meat down too Dean's
& put it in the deep freeze. We didn't go down town in eve.
Sun. Nov. 18
Quite a nice day. We were alone all day & eve.
Mon. Nov. 19
Nice day. Quite a wind from the south. I washed in A.M. Went down too the Hall
right after dinner & helped get the lower hall ready too have Lodge down
there tonite. Ruth Holt, Ida Halse & Bess Ward helped too. Went over too
see Alberta a few minutes. She is some better. We went down too the farm later
in P.M. or rather Mon did & I stopped at Arthur's. Went too Lodge
in eve. The Decorah Degree Team came up & initiated Gladys Albertson into
our Lodge so that's the reason we had Lodge down stairs. The work was
beautiful. Grace Pierce joined also by Dismissal Certificate. We had a picnic
lunch up stairs afterward. Got home about 12. Clem Headington died this A.M.
after being sick for about [blank] weeks. He has had a stroke & pneumonia.
Tues. Nov. 20
Dandy nice day. Warmer. Quite a stiff south wind. Mon took 4 geese too Decorah
for Ruth early this A.M. too have dressed. He got back here with them about
12:45 & had a lunch & then we took them down too Ruth's. I helped
her get them ready for the deep freeze & Mon & Danny went over too Dean's
where they are picking corn. Went too the Show in eve. Bing Crosby. Good. Harold
Vine got the $50.
Wed. Nov. 21
Nice day. Mon stayed at Lloyd D's station in A.M. & until nearly 1
P.M. & he also stayed at Gordon R's awhile in P.M. We went down too
Dean's in eve after some eggs & cream & then stopped at Arthur's
& helped Ruth make dressing & stuff the goose. Got colder & windy
tonite. Clem Headington was buried this P.M. His funeral was at the Lutheran
Church & burial at the B.O. cemetry. I didn't go.
Thurs. Nov. 22
Nice early in A.M. but clouded up & started too snow between 11 & 12
& it sure did snow hard for some time. Cleared off late in P.M. We went
too Arthur's about 10. Louie & Mrs. K., Claude & Olive were there
too. Had a very, very good dinner. We each took food. Dean's went too
Locust. Mon & Arthur picked corn until noon.
Fri. Nov. 23
About 10º below this morn. Not too nice a day. Quite cold all day although
it did warm up a little in P.M. Dean's took Linda too the dentist at Harmony
in P.M. & left Tommy here while they were gone. Had a letter from Isa. Cold
nite.

10º below this morn. Nice day. Warmed up quite a bit but the wind was still
cool. We went too Decorah in P.M. Quite a crowd down there. Geo., Lydia &
Georgia W. were here & spent the eve.

Rather nice early in A.M. but clouded up & started snowing between 10 &
11 & kept it up the rest of the day. Snowed quite hard at times. About 3
inches of snow fell but the wind didn't blow so it just laid where it
fell. Not too cold a day. We were alone all day & eve.
Mon. Nov. 26
Not too nice a day & not too bad. Sun shone some & it was warmer but
windy. I went down too Bernice Newhouse's in P.M. with La Vern Snell in
P.M., as we three were on the nominating com. for the Club, so we met &
chose officers. Weren't gone very long.
Tues. Nov. 27
Much warmer today. Thawed quite a little. Sun shone most of the day. I washed
in A.M. Mon took Olive & I too Decorah in P.M. too visit the Decorah Rebekah's
Past Noble Grand's Club. Had a nice time & a nice lunch. We got home
about 5:30. Went too the Show in eve. "Fancy Pants" Bob Hope &
Lucile Ball. Large crowd but the money wasn't given away.
Wed. Nov. 28
Dandy nice day. Quite warm & it thawed a lot. We went down too Arthur's
awhile in P.M. & Mon went out in the field where they were picking corn.
We went over too Dean's awhile too. Got some eggs & cream. It got
terribly foggy about dark. We were supposed too go too Ossian too a dance but
it was too foggy. Mon didn't want too drive.
Thurs. Nov. 29
Nice day, after the fog cleared away. Quite warm. Mon went too Lodge in eve
& then a car load of them went too Decorah & played cards with the Odd
Fellows down there. Olive & I went too the Lutheran Church about 5:30 too
their chicken & meat ball dinner. Had such a good dinner & a good crowd
too. We stopped down town awhile after coming down from the church. Very foggy
again tonite.
Fri. Nov. 30
Fog hung on most of the A.M. but it was nice in P.M. Claude took Olive &
I too Club at Evelyn Van Vleits in P.M. Good crowd out. Had nomination of officers.
Lettie Wright Pres., Evelyn Van V. Pres, Lenora L. Sec., Violet U. Asst. Sec.
& Inez W. Treas. We also had a "Stork Shower" for Donna Kruse.
She got some nice gifts. Had a good lunch. Rode home with La Vern Snell. Went
too the dance in eve. Not too large a crowd but we had a good time. S. boy's
played. Quite foggy early in eve but it cleared off before we came home.
Sat. Dec. 1
Dandy nice day. Quite warm & it thawed quite a little. We went too Decorah
about 11:15. I got my hair fixed. Went too see Dr. Dalquist in P.M. about 3.
He gave me an examination. Got out of there about 4:30 so we fooled around until
about 5:30 & then went down too the "Steak Shop" & had supper.
My steak was very good but Mon's was not so good. We went back up town
then & went too the Show. "Cross Winds". It was pretty good.
Got home about 9:30 & it was terrible going in some places, so very foggy.
Dean was here a few minutes early in A.M. They finished husking at Arthur's
in A.M.

Not too nice a day. Nothing doing.
Mon. Dec. 3
Not too nice a day. We went too Decorah about 8:30 A.M. I had too be at the
Dr's at 9. Went through the mess of getting ready & having Xray pictures
taken. Did part of it & then went up town until 12:30 & then back &
had the last of the pictures taken. Went back up town & had lunch &
then came home. Went too Lodge in eve. Nomination & Election of officers
for the coming year. Nettie Nelson N.G. Ida Halse V.G. Alice W., Rec. Sec. Dorothea
R. Fin. Sec. & Mabel K. Treas. Had a lunch afterward. Dean & Linda were
here awhile in P.M. Mon & Dean went over too Geo. Kruse's & bought
3 holstein heifers & their calves.
Tues. Dec. 4
Quite a nice day. We went too Decorah about 10 & I got in too see Dr. about
11 about the Xray's. He said it was an ulcer & put me on a diet. We
came home a little after 12. Got Mon a lunch & we went over too Geo. Kruse's
too pay for the cattle but they had already gone too Dean's with them
so he paid Mrs. K. We went on down too Dean's then & were there awhile.
The cattle are very nice. Went too the Show in eve. "California Passage".
Quite a crowd but no one got the money.
Wed. Dec. 5
Not too nice a day but not bad either. I washed & the clothes dried good.
Went down town a little while in P.M. Went over too Genev's but no one
was home but Josie so I had a good visit with her. We sold 3 old cows today
at the Sale at Decorah. They bro't $685.42.
Thurs. Dec. 6
Not very nice day. Sun did shine some & it rained some. Wind blew quite
hard all day & nite. We went down too Dean's awhile in A.M. I ironed
in P.M. Olive was over awhile. Went up too the Hall & practiced awhile after
the Odd Fellows were done with Lodge.
Fri. Dec. 7
Not very nice day. Quite windy all day. Arthur's bro't the boys
up a little after 12 & left them while they went too Decorah. They got back
about 3:30. Dean's came about 1 with Tommy & left him while they went
too Harmony too the dentist. They came back about 4. Had a letter from Isa.
Sat. Dec. 8
Not too bad a day. We went too Decorah about 10. I stopped at the Clinic &
Mon went on over town. Had a treatment for sore back. Did a little shopping
after I got over town. Came home about 2. Had a lunch about 3:30 & then
went down too Arthur's awhile & then over too Dean's awhile.
Went down town in eve. It snowed some in the eve.
Sun. Dec. 9
Quite nice in P.M. but not so nice in A.M. Sun shone & it thawed quite a
little in P.M. Ruth bro't Bill up & left him while she went too S.S.
& church. We had a good time.
Mon. Dec. 10
Quite nice in A.M. but cool. Clouded up in P.M. & snowed some in eve. I
washed & ironed. Mon tore off plaster in P.M. We went down town in eve &
I went up too Nellie Marlow's too help the girls plan the oyster supper
for the next Lodge night.
Tues. Dec. 11
Not too bad a day. We went too Decorah early in A.M. & Mon got the car fixed
some. I bought some Xmas presents. Mon went down too Dean's in P.M. too
help pick corn but something was wrong with the picker & they had too get
it fixed so they didn't pick corn. Went too the Show in eve. Abbot &
Costello in the "Foreign Legion". Of course they were funny. Bill
Carolan's boy got the money.
Wed. Dec.12
Quite blustery at times during the day & the sun shone some too but it was
a chilly day. I went too W.S.C.S. at Inez W's in P.M. with Miriam. Xmas
party & program. Ruth & I sang a duet. They had a nice program &
a nice time. I got a Xmas tree from Charlene.
Thurs. Dec. 13
8º below this morn. Quite a nice day but it was chilly. Mon went too Mabel
a few minutes before noon & then we went down too Dean's in P.M. &
got some meat & cream. Nobody home. Went down town in eve. Mon went too
Lodge. Some of the Rebekah's went up too the Hall & got supper as
there were 6 visitors from Monona. We got home about 12.
Fri. Dec. 14
Danny's 5th Birthday. Not a very nice day. Quite windy & blustery.
Snowed some but not much. We went down too Arthur's for Danny's
Birthday dinner. Dean's were there too. Had a good dinner. Dan got nice
gifts. Dean's went home shortly after dinner but we stayed until about
4. Got much colder at nite & the wind blew harder. We went too the dance
in eve. Quite a few out & a good time.
Sat. Dec. 15
10º below. Nice bright day but it didn't warm up much all day &
the wind blew too. Too cold too do anything. Cold nite again but the wind went
down.
Sun. Dec. 16
22º below. Nice bright day. Warmed up some. Dean was here awhile about
noon. Cold nite. Little daughter born to Walt & Wilma Barth tonite.
Mon. Dec. 17
8º below. Not very nice day. Quite blustery & snowy. Mon went down
too Dean's in A.M. & loaded up a pick-up of wood & then Dean bro't
it up for us. Linda came home with Mon & went back with Dean. Went too Lodge
in eve. We had a kind of a party after Lodge. Cards & visiting & then
we had supper. Oysters, sandwiches, jello, potato salad, pickles & coffee.
Had a nice time.
Tues. Dec. 18
Nice bright day but cool. We went too Decorah about 10. I stopped off at the
Clinic too see Dr. D. He said I was coming O.K. & wouldn't have too
come back for some time. Got over town about 12. Did a little shopping &
then we came home. I went down town a few minutes late in P.M. & then went
too the Show in eve. "Louisa". It was good. No one got the money.
Olive was over awhile in P.M. Quite cold in eve but warmed up some in the nite.
Wed. Dec. 19
Not too nice a day but not too bad either. Cool. Arthur's bro't
the boys up & left them while they went too Decorah. Went too the School
program of our home school at the hall in eve. Linda & Iona were at the
program too & Dean took Tommy too the barber shop & had his hair cut.
They came on up here afterward & waited with Mon for us too come home from
the program. It was good & they had a nice lunch afterward. Cleared off
in eve & it was nice but cold.
Thurs. Dec. 20
Not too nice in A.M. but cleared off & was nice in P.M. I made candy. Went
down town in eve. Mon went too Lodge. Dean's left Tommy & Linda here
today while they went too Decorah.
Fri. Dec. 21
Quite nice after dinner, but not so nice in A.M. I made candy in P.M.

Quite a nice day. Some warmer but still chilly. We went too Decorah about 11.
I got my hair fixed. Came home about 3. We fixed up the fires & then went
down too Dean's awhile. Stopped at Arthur's on our way home. Went
down town in eve. Snowed some in eve.

Tues. Dec. 25
Snowed until in P.M. & then it cleared off & was very nice. Quite a
lot of snow fell last nite & today. We went too Arthur's for dinner.
Got stuck in the snow going in so we walked on in & Mon & Arthur went
back with the shovel & got the car out. Louie's & Dean's
were there too. We had a good dinner. Got nice gifts too. Went over too Claude's
& spent the eve. Guy Sheley died about 5 A.M.
Wed. Dec. 26
10 above. Quite a nice day but it was a little chilly. I took a pie up too Myrtie
S's in A.M. Went too the Show in eve. "The Milk Man". It was
funny. Not too many out & the money wasn't given away. Cold nite but
still.
Thurs. Dec. 27
30º below this morn. Not too bad a day. The sun shone most of the time
& it warmed up but it was still a chilly day. Olive & I went too Guy
Sheley's funeral at the M.E. church in P.M. Ruth played & Shirley
sang. Mon went too Prosper just after dinner, awhile & got the fish we had
ordered. Arthur & the boys came up & got theirs after Ruth got home
from the funeral. Mon went too Lodge in eve but I didn't go down town.
Had too much of a cold.
Fri. Dec. 28
Nice bright day. Warm. Went too Club at Elsie's in P.M. with Dorothea
R. Had our Xmas party. I got a set of plastic bowl covers. Quite a few out but
still not all of the girls were there. Had a nice time & a nice lunch. The
new officers took over today. Went too the Dance in eve. Charlie Olson &
his orchestra from Decorah played. They are pretty good but not as good as the
S. boys. A pretty good crowd out & a pretty good time.
Sat. Dec. 29
Dandy nice day. Thawed quite a little. Dean & Linda were up in A.M. &
got their fish. We went too Decorah in P.M. Large crowd in town. Didn't
go down town in eve. Went too bed early.

Dandy nice day. Thawed quite a little.
Mon. Dec. 31
Not very nice day. Foggy & damp all day. Got colder & windy late in
P.M. Ole came today too work at the kitchen. They got all the lathe & plaster
torn off the dining room. They went too Prosper the first thing in the morning
too see about some things for their work. Arthur's were here awhile just
before dinner. Dean was here awhile just after dinner.
